Credit to Johns Hopkins for several good moves. As Coach Dave Pietramala recounted in his news conference on Saturday, University President William R. Brody attended practice on Friday in a full uniform and spoke to the team, which was in a five-game losing streak. He asked senior captain Eric Zerrlaut how important was the Maryland game? Zerrlaut answered that it was the most important game of the season.

To which Brody asked, what if Zerrlaut learned he had bone cancer and had only three months to live. Would the Maryland game be so important then? No, Zerrlaut answered, according to Pietramala. It would not. A moment that added some perspective to Hopkins's losses.

The Hopkins coaches also asked honorary captain Ryan Major to be on the sideline yesterday. Major served in the Army in Iraq when he lost both his legs to an IED. He became interested in Hopkins because his classmate and friend from Towson High, Andy Posil, was a backup goalie for Hopkins last season.

Major was on the sideline yesterday with Posil, wearing a Hopkins No. 37 jersey. Almost every Hopkins player went to shake his hand before the game--goalie Mike Gvozden seemed particularly affected by Major and spoke to him for a while during warmups. Major was introduced to the crowd before the game and received a high-five from several Hopkins players in the game's final seconds.

Anyway, onto the business (before the Man United game starts on BBC Five Live).

Mike Preston of the Balt Sun thinks Hopkins and Maryland are headed in different directions.

Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times was impressed by Stephen Peyser.

The Washington Post thinks it had seen Paul Rabil's opening goal before.

The Virginia-Duke game drew 8,000 fans at Klockner Stadium. And that's about the only good news for UVa, which had some goalie problems in a 19-9 loss.

Loyola's Shane Koppens continues a long tradition of Loyola beating Georgetown in lacrosse. The Baltimore Sun was there.

TFBO2F finds the Charlottesville Daily Progress Web site a bit inscrutable...or maybe we're still a bit hungover...or maybe its almost time for the match at Old Trafford to kick off...but anyway, we bet there's a good story about the UVa-Duke lax game on that site somewhere.

Anybody see the MD-Hop game in person? Can anyone comment on the play of the goalie?
