Where to Watch the Games

The first-round games are being broadcast live on ESPNU at noon, 2:30, 5 and 7:30 Saturday and Sunday. If anyone has suggestions on lacrosse-friendly places that aren't listed below to watch games, please email me at swezeyc@washpost.com.

Also, please call these places ahead of time to make sure they're showing the games. Tell them ESPNU is channel 609 on DirecTV. UPDATE: Bailey's Pub in Ballston Mall and Bungalow in Shirlington appear to be good watch spots, too (see comments).

And please don't forget the Final Four watch party at Rhino Bar in Gtown on Memorial Day weekend. A $10 cover charge will be donated to breast cancer research and entitles patrons to numerous food and drink specials. More details to follow.

In Virginia, Summers Restaurant (near Courthouse) has ESPNU and has shown lacrosse games for years. I first went there to watch Army-Navy on then-CSTV in 2004 and have been several times since. If you don't see the games on TV right away, ask Manager Joe Javidara. In the past he has always been cool about finding a spot somewhere to show the games. The downsides are that the food isn't great and there won't be volume on the lacrosse.

Also can try Mister Day's in Courthouse. I have never been, but friends have gone to watch lacrosse there in the past and found the staff to be very accomidating. Crystal City Sports Pub has an amazing atmosphere for college football Saturdays and I wouldn't be surprised if its showing the lacrosse....

Several places to try in the District. Buffalo Billiards (near Dupont Circle) has put on lacrosse games for me a couple times in the past, with volume. I'd say the earlier you get there the better chance you have of getting a TV with volume.

Town Hall (upper Wisconsin Ave.) apparently showed the Selection Show on ESPNU on Sunday night. It is very lacrosse friendly: Its co-owner, Tim Walsh, played for and later coached at Mount St. Mary's. (Full disclosure: Walsh is a good friend.)

And I bet the Greene Turtle (several locations, including Verizon Center) will be showing the games.

Oddly, one place to avoid is ESPNZone. My brother and I tried to find a basketball game on ESPNU there last year and were met with a bureaucracy more insipid and turgid than the process by which people were selected to meet the king in the excellent 1996 French movie Ridicule. We left after 45 minutes; they never did put the game on for us. And I bet they thought they'd get away with it...

In Maryland, other than the Greene Turtle, a new place opened down the street from UMd called Varsity Grille. It apparently has 22 TVs. I am going to check it out after the Maryland-Denver game, though I couldn't find a Web site nor a phone number to double-check that it has ESPNU. Help, anyone?

I bet there are a lot of places in Bethesda showing games, too. Maybe try Caddies or Flanagans Harp and Fiddle (great food).

I've always had good luck with Bailey's Pub in the Ballston Mall (in Arlington). The place is huge and has numerous TVs of all sizes.

They've always been good to me about putting on lacrosse games on at least one of the TVs, usually the one in front of a leather couch (nice!). In fact, I've watched my alma mater (Cortland) play in the last two championship games at Bailey's on CSTV.

Food is decent (for bar food) and plentiful, and they have a good selection of beers. Prices are a little bit high, but not outrageous.

Thank you Incredulous! I have heard very good things about Baileys from other folks, too.

And who knew you went to the Cortland, cradle of lacrosse colleges? (Urick, Tierney, Seaman, etc.)

One clarification: The ESPNZone to which I was referring in my blog post was the one in the District.

The one in Baltimore is excellent and makes the poverty of the one in DC even more stark.

Bungalow in Shirlington - not a lot going on there on Saturdays, and they were really cool about changing the channel on a tv right in front of me a few times this spring. They keep your big mug o' beer full, too.
