Obama Beats Clinton in Mississippi

By Chris Cillizza
washingtonpost.com staff writer

Sen. Barack Obama defeated Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in today's Mississippi Democratic presidential primary, an anticipated win that sets the stage for a grueling six-week mini-campaign in advance of Pennsylvania's April 22 vote.

There was little doubt that the Illinois senator would prevail in a southern state with a large African American electorate. Voters in Mississippi divided starkly along racial lines, according to exit polls cited by the Associated Press. Roughly 90 percent of black voters backed Obama while roughly seven in ten white voters went for Clinton, the AP noted.

The primary was called by most television networks as well as the AP shortly after the polls closed in the Magnolia State.

Obama bypassed a traditional victory speech, choosing instead to appear on CNN, where he called Mississippi "just another win in our column, and we are getting more delegates."

"What we've tried to do is steadily make sure that in each state we are making the case about the need for change in this country, and obviously the people of Mississippi responded," Obama said from Chicago.

Maggie Williams, Clinton's campaign manager, congratulated Obama on his victory before quickly changing the subject to upcoming battles in the prolonged contest for the Democratic presidential nomination. "Now we look forward to campaigning in Pennsylvania and around the country as this campaign continues," she said in a statement.

Obama's win in Mississippi means he has largely swept the South in this nomination fight - due in large part to the Illinois senator's overwhelming appeal among the large black population in those states.

Obama is the first African American with a strong chance of winning a presidential nomination, and blacks eager to be part of the historic campaign have turned out in large numbers at the polls.

But Obama has also demonstrated substantial appeal among southern whites. He picked up the support of a quarter of white voters in the Alabama and South Carolina Democratic primaries and 43 percent of whites who voted in the Georgia Democratic contest. About a quarter of white voters taking part in today's primary supported Obama, according to MSNBC polling.

With his Mississippi victory, Obama has now scored convincing southern victories in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. Clinton won Tennessee and Arkansas earlier this year. Yet Obama's latest victory was nearly overshadowed by the increasingly vitriolic rhetoric traded by the campaigns as the day went on.

Obama (Ill.) has displayed growing pique in recent days over Clinton's assertion that she is more qualified to be commander in chief and has ridiculed her suggestions that he would be better suited as her vice presidential running mate.

Clinton (N.Y.) renewed her line of attack on the Illinois senator's experience and record on Tuesday, telling a crowd of several thousand people in Harrisburg, Pa., that "There's a big difference between talk and action."

Clinton "will say and do anything to win this election," Obama spokesman Bill Burton retorted in a statement sent to reporters ahead of the former first lady's speech in Harrisburg.

As campaign tensions mounted, Clinton said she disagrees with Geraldine Ferraro, one of her fundraisers and the 1984 vice presidential candidate, for suggesting that Obama achieved his status as Democratic front-runner primarily because he is black. Obama and his aides called on Clinton to denounce Ferraro's comments, which were made late last week to the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif.

"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party," Obama told the Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call. "They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd. And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

Clinton told the Associated Press today that "I do not agree with" Ferraro's comments, and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters -- on both sides, because we both have this experience -- say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

Obama entered the Mississippi vote as the favorite given the Magnolia State's considerable black population -- 36 percent according to the 2000 Census -- and his past performances in other southern states. He also rode a bit of momentum from his convincing win in Wyoming's primary last Saturday.

Obama began his day in Greenville, Miss., where he told a crowd at a restaurant named Buck's: "I'm very proud of all of you. I thank you so much. Now I think I should have some grits." He later jetted to Pennsylvania, where he stumped in Bucks County, northeast of Philadelphia. Clinton made stops in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, with an eye towards Pennsylvania's critical April 22 primary.

During her speech in Harrisburg, Clinton sought to make sharp contrasts between herself and Obama on energy policy, the war in Iraq and the North American Free Trade Agreement. In the address, Clinton brought up reports that while Obama took a tough stand against NAFTA in Ohio, where the agreement is highly unpopular, one of his advisers was signaling to the Canadian government that this was largely political posturing.

"I've got to tell you, there's a big difference between talk and action," Clinton said, according to prepared remarks released by her campaign. "But if you're going to talk, then you ought to mean what you say so people can count on it."

The Obama campaign, as has become its custom in recent days, responded forcefully to Clinton's remarks.
"Proving once again that she will say and do anything to win this election, Senator Clinton today has unleashed a kitchen sink of distorted and discredited attacks that she knows aren't true," said Burton, the Obama spokesman. He added that Pennsylvania voters deserve "more than same old attack politics that Americans have already rejected across the country."

That the back-and-forth between the candidates came in Pennsylvania rather than Mississippi underscored the relative stakes in today's vote.

The Clinton campaign sought to downplay the significance of Mississippi's primary, noting that the huge African-American vote made the race a shoo-in for Obama.

Obama's campaign put more emphasis on the state in hopes of adding to its lead in pledged delegates over Clinton. But with 151 pledged delegates at stake in Pennsylvania late next month, Obama spent the latter part of his day campaigning for that big prize in the Keystone State.

Thirty-three delegates were up for grabs in Mississippi. Heading into tonight's vote, Obama had 1,368 pledged delegates to 1,226 for Clinton. Among uncommitted superdelegates, Clinton retains a 247-to-211 lead over Obama.

Washington Post staff writer Peter Slevin and Polling Director Jon Cohen contributed to this report.

Obama wouldn't be in the race if the press was doing it's job.

What Obama did in Chicago is Criminal.

Literally.

Why does everyone keep saying Hillary won Texas? I thought that Obama took the caucuses by a large enough margin to offset the primary? That doesn't sound like a big win to me.

This thing with the Gov. of N.Y. will make voters remember Bill Clinton's infidelity and they will not want to go back to that.
Hillary is such a ruthless lier the voters will want to turn the page on her type of campaign tactics. Penn. voters arn't the ignorant Ohio type. They know what to do when the time is right.

Posted by: albert jackson | March 11, 2008 6:17 PM

Hillary will CRUSH Obama in Penn.

Penn. voters are too smart to fall for his slimy sales-pitch.

Obama is toast.

Even he can't fool all the people all the tiem.

I would say that it is Clinton, by her and her supporter's comments that shows she does not have what it takes to be President. First she insults Obama by endorsing McCain over him, and then she thinks she can invite him to be on her ticket. Isn't that weird? Does she thinks that is the way to be diplomatic or something. I sure don't want her answering the phone at 3 am. And then her double standard is so apparent. When Obama's advisor said something negative about her, the monster remark, she demanded that the woman be fired. Now her fundraiser says something repugnant but Clinton only disagrees. The least she should do is to denounce and reject. What this shows is that Hillary has no class, not like Obama. I think Obama will do much better dealing with foreign dignitaries than Hillary, because she lacks social common sense.

snvreader: You sounded much more sane 1-2 months ago, without this shrill hysterical undertone you've picked up lately. Getting so desperate lately?

Thing is that the whole "big Clinton wins" on Mar 4th yielded a single-digit gain for Clinton. However, nobody seems to report that on the certification in California, Obama picked up 4 delegates compared to the earlier projections, while Clinton lost 4. Which means that this little thing alone netted as big a swing of 8 delegates ad the entire Mar 4th. When's the Washington Post going to report about that?

All this whining about the MSM being sooo terribly anti-Hilary. It's so ridiculous.

svreader, your posts would mean a lot more if you didn't have arguably the worst record of intellectual honesty of any poster on this board.

Anyhow, the mere fact that neither campaign has been working Mississippi very hard doesn't mean there aren't 33 delegates at stake. A moderate win by Obama should wipe out the four-delegate progress that Hillary made a week ago.

When the Clintons will have released their records (tax returns, White House records, list of big donors to their foundation), the scandals surrounding them will come to
light, Hillary will be radio-active as candidate for president (or VP), and Barack Obama will be favored in ALL remaining states... Here is a very small overview where the Clintons' money comes from?

The Clinton foundation received recently a $31.3 million donation after Bill expressed enthusiastic support for the Kazakh leader's, undercuting both American foreign policy and sharp criticism of Kazakhstan's poor human rights (note that on the campaign trail, Hillary is referring to double-talk from Barack!):

In january 2008, the Clintons received $20 million from business deals with Dubai in the Middle East:

Let's press the Clintons to release their records so that we can move with Barack to the next stage with McCain.

how can Geraldines comments be inappropriate when in the same article Obama's winning of the souther states is credited to heavy black population.

what Geraldine said is true, blacks are voting for Obama over Clinton so this is a racially driven race

so - whats wrong with blacks voting for black - nothing exceept that Barak turns everything into a race card

this article is bi-polar

I do not understand why Obama supporters all enrage over Ferraro's comments that Obama fever is due to the zelous support of the African American race. It is a fact, not a comment. I would guess over 85% of the African American people voted for Obama one way or another. Can you tell me 85% of the whites have voted for Clinton? Here is my prediction:
Obama 80% of the black votes, Hillary 20%

Obama can win this, but his supporters might need to get nasty when the neocons pull the rug out from under him with their media bias. Their best weapon for campaign killin'.
As long as Obama goes along with the neocon agenda, he should be ok till the very end, then woops..there goes the rug.

I have heard "they" have Hillary pre-destine to win. It does make since that they would want Hillary, ie Boosh, Clinton, Boosh, now another Clinton to ram more Nafta through and regroup the troops for an attack on Iran.

No stake in getting Hillary elected.

Really disgusted with what Obama did in Chicago.

Obama's supporters remain blissfully ignorant of the world class screwing he gave the people who supported him in Chicago.

Once the truth about it hits the national mainsteam media, nobody will vote for Obama for dogcatcher, let alone President!

The real Obama isn't a very nice guy, or a very honest one. He's as crooked a politician as they come and he let his supporters rot in slums while he got rich.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDHsHM0laT8&feature=related

I dare anyone who still supports Obama to watch this clip, from Chicago's most respect TV news, and then claim with a straight face that he's worth supporting for any public office!!!

Speaking of trust, don't forget Obama's WHOPPER of a LIE during the debates when he claimed to not even know Rezko and that the only connection he had with him was two hours of legal work when he was an associate at a law firm.

Compare that to the fact that Obama knew Rezko for 17 years, that Rezko was a major campaign contributor to every campaign Obama's run, and the "sweetheart" deal Rezko gave him on his house.

Posted by: Neilc | March 11, 2008 6:54 PM

The video, which is of a Chicago TV news report based on information published in the Chicago Sun Times explicitly says that the buildings that Obama got Rezko the $100M contract to repair during the time Obama was a state senator were never repaired, and that 11 of those buildings were in Obama's district itself.

Obama got Rezko the contracts.

Obama was supposed to follow up on the work to make sure it was being done according to the contract.

Obama didn't care and didn't follow up on any of the work, as he was required to do, including work to either repair, or if necessary, completely rebuild, 11 of the worst buildings that were in Obama's own district.

The last group of people to fall for Obama's charm and sales pitch, the poorest of the poor in Chicago, got totally shafted by him.

The good news is that everyone in Chicago knows what a lousy job Obama did and there will be many articles and TV news shows that will describe for Americans, in detail, just how poor job Obama did, and the needless human suffering his arrogance and incompetence caused the poorest of the poor people of color who made the mistake of believing in and trusting snake oil super-salesman Barry Obama.

Most Obama supporters will come to their senses when they see the video posted here or read the news stories that will follow in the press.

If Obama can so coldly screw the poorest of the poor in Chicago, how can we depend on his heart, or his judgement about anything?

What Obama did in Rezki deal ing Chicago was NO different than what Congressman Randy Duke Cunningham did in Delmar, California. This war hero is currently in jail.

Here are few details about his real estate scandals:

Defense Contractor Mitchell Wade, in a sweetheart deal, secretly bought Duke and Nancy Cunningham's Del Mar Heights house November 20, 2003 for $1,675,000. They hid the sale through a shell corporation of Wade's, "1523 New Hampshire Avenue LLC." A month later, Wade put it on the market, but it didn't sell until the price was reduced to market value, eight months later. Wade sold Cunningham's old home for $975,000. Since home values haven't gone down recently in San Diego, it seems Wade gave Cunningham $700,000 (not a campaign contribution, but apparently an illegal gift). Wade never moved in there, as he and his company, MZM Inc. are in the Washington, D. C. area and don't do business in San Diego. Cunningham bought his Rancho Santa Fe mansion for $2.55 million. Shortly later, Cunningham had Brent Wilkes pay his second mortgage on the Rancho Santa Fe Mansion and Wade pay the first mortgage. In exchange, it appears Cunningham helped Wade get contracts for his MZM Inc. ($41 million in fiscal 2003, $65 million in 2004) to triple MZM's profits in 2004. Cunningham says the contracts are "very, very classified" stuff, so he can't talk about it. Wilkes gained $6 million in defense contracts for unwanted hardware worth $1.5 million In short, these were war profiteering bribes.

Geraldine Ferraro's recent comment is right. If Obama is white male running for president, where will he be.....

Media is so very worried to vet Obama. Joe Scarborough said exactly the same thing on Bill Maher Show this week.

Incidentally, Ferraro's comment is all the more ludicrous and obscene considering that if she weren't a woman, she wouldn't have been on Mondale's ticket.

Great line from Doonesbury right after Mondale got trounced in '84. A reporter and someone from Mondale's campaign are drowning their sorrows in a bar. The campaign staffer laments how such Mondale could have lost with such a great VP candidate.

Given what a well known scoundrel Obama is in Illinois, how in the world did he get 66% of the vote there?

Posted by: joebewildered | March 11, 2008 7:02 PM

Jones, the "Kingmaker." Jones appointed Obama as sponsor of virtually every high profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority and had spent years championing the bills, such as landmark racial profiling and videotaped confession legislation- yanked away by Jones and given to Obama. (To enhance Obama's political resume.)

State Senator Rickey Headon, the original sponsor complained at the time, "Barack didn't have to endure any of it (the beatings and insults and all the racial comments over the years from the nasty Republican committee chairman, yet, he (Obama) in the end got the credit." Anon.

Last week after the Ohio/Texas/RI/Vermont primaries, I was curious to see what would happen if the Dems used the Republican system of winner-take-all in their primaries. I did this a hypothetical exercise only.

I do believe it is the fairest system of choosing delegates in that it mirrors the general election in most cases (Maine and Nebraska employ the district approach in the general, meaning that their presidential election runs like the Dems primaries, electoral college elector's awarded by the popular vote winners in the individual congressional districts).

So I awarded an individual state's total number of delegates to the winner of that state's popular vote.

I have adjusted these numbers to include the Wyoming caucus and today's primary (using a projection that Obama will win in Miss.). I did not, and let me repeat, did not, include Florida and Michigan in the count. And, since this is following the more democratic Republican primary system, there are no "Superdelegates" - namely, the entire slate of delegates is awarded to the popular vote winner in any given state.

Delegate Count In A Democratic Winner-Take-All World:

Obama: 1597
Clinton: 1738

Interesting, don't you think?

She won the popular vote (i.e. Hispanic) vote. Out of the three states she "won" she netted about 8 delegates difference. He won the big counties in Texas giving him a larger delegate count. I don't know why they keep saying she won when she really didn't. African American vote or not, I hope he creams her in Mississippi. The Clintons are the most corrupt couple I have ever seen.

It's not illegal to buy a house. It's not illegal to buy property at the same time as someone else either.

Reznik did do illegal things for sure but the only documented connection Obama has with this crook is this house purchase...so it's being reported. BUT he's not being investegated because buying property isn't illegal.

I watched the television piece and it raises a lot of questions, but it also doesn't answer them. I will be interested in seeing how this plays out in more expanded print pieces, but there is no doubt it could definitely hurt Obama, even if it is mostly innuendo. It goes to show you how much money has contaminated our political system that someone comparatively clean can have some unsavory connections. To compare this to the systematic selling-out that former Walmart Board member Hillary Clinton and her husband have participated in is not a balanced comparison. Even knowing this about Obama, I still would take him over the Clintons any day of the week.

Geraldine Ferraro was correct. Mr. Obama's totally been riding the black-like-me vote. Now it's a crime to speak what we all know. On televeision tonight it's all about how many black people live in Mississippi - he has the edge because of it. 85% of blacks admit they are voting for him based only on that and would if he were the dog catcher. The Rezko trial will begin and Obama hasn't taken responsibility for the kitchen sink - it was full of his dirty dishes. His own damn sink. The man doesn't answer questions and rudely walks away from the press(ure). We're just getting rid of a guy who doesn't think he has to answer questions. This is a job interview. Hilary did not fire Ferraro. Is that because she is also racist? By keeping somebody who makes racist comments in her campaign that means she condones it. I think it can also be read that she must believe that this type of thing, racism, can be accepted or is acceptable. Thus, at some level Hilary is a racist as well.

Hillary has the momentum. She is brilliant, informed, articulate and capable. The Obama boys are threatened to death! The demographics are right and her answers are complete. All answers required, background checks will be done, references checks. If he doesn't then he won't be returning for the second interview. We have an over qualified candidate in Hillary Clinton.

Obama team should continued to pressure the Clinton's to denounce Ferraro,She is getting away with too much. The Clinton's have no class, they are trying to divide the country by supporting racial slurs. It is time to get rid of the old and bring in the new "Obama all the way".

Posted by: andrea | March 11, 2008 7:29 PM

It was shown yesterday that Hillary was padding her foreign policy experience but got caught again. The Northern Ireland foreign minister said Hillary was not involved in the negotiations - no where near the table.

And experience - it is about judgement. And HIllary's vote on the Iraq War (which she has not appologized for) and now her saber rattleing against Iran - makes her no better then any other Bush-lite.

We need a fresh start - but Hillary will do anything to win. I am sorry for those Hillary supporters who don't believe that Obama has been fully vetted. He was won my vote. And it is only Hillary's talking points that make you believe he is not ready. Of course he is.

Even last year Obama made a speech about broadening out support in Pakistan and not relying on our support of the dictator Musharef. Not with Musharef on his way out, we have no pull. Hillary has just been about Musharef. That is a perfect example of Obama's judgement over Hillary's.

If race is not an issue as Sen Obama tries to pretend, why are people so uptight about mentioning their race and then tell us who they are supporting?

Posted by: | March 11, 2008 7:33 PM

I just have to say that this race is turning into a big-time movie script. Something that would come out of a Rocky 3 movie. Hilliary Clinton as "Rocky Balboa" the underdog that was played brilliantly by Sylvester Stallone, and the big time slugger (who proclaims himself as the champion of the world)"Clubber Lang" played by my favorite T.V sitcom star "Mr T" as Barack Obama. This is of course not a sporting event, but a political event that both of these opoinents are fighting for. They are fighting for pride, power, love of country, honnor, and the most important one of all SURVIVAL! You can say all you want about Hilliary that she is this and that. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE HER ABILITY TO PLAY THE GAME TO WIN!Just because Obama appears to be the front runner and the champion of this race, it is far from over. Look for another comeback in the state of Pennslyvania where the ledgend of Rocky Balboa lives and is alive and and well. Just follow the words of Clubber Lang "Dead Meat", "Hey Sucker",prediction for Obama, "PAIN"!

What has JFK done that is so great? He was assassinated ... that's his only claim to fame. Obama, he is just an affirmative candidate, much like Hillary. With blacks going for him, I am not black so my vote will go to Hillary at Penns, then McCain if she did not get the nomination. I had enough of empty talks by Bush, don't need to go through another 4 years with Obama.

Posted by: J. Hanson | March 11, 2008 7:35 PM

"Hillary will CRUSH Obama in Penn... Penn. voters are too smart to fall for his slimy sales-pitch."

Ironically, all polls clearly show that Obama is strongly favored by more educated & well informed voters; while Hillary does better with voters w/o college degree.

This is obviously a generalization; I know smart people who support Hillary too and respect that. However, it's a cheap and irresponsible claim that, oh, Obama supporter are just stupid and got tricked. I'd like to joke that I find it interesting that it's the more successful and educated voters that get "duped". Seriously, think about it, who's being duped here?

"heavily favored to bounce back from high-profile losses to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in Texas and Ohio a week ago."
--------------------------------------
OBAMA WON TEXAS. HRC won a few delegates in Ohio, the looser state.

svreader...you seem to be on full court press against Obama. What's the deal. And you like Hillary for what reason? Health care? Hummm...she tried that in 1993, claims she was co-president for 7 more years (just like Barbara Bush - she got to pick the type of tea that was served) and 6 more years in the Senate...and she never tried for a health care plan again. What has Hillary done that so impresses you? Really. Obama has been a better senator then Hillary ever has and he has more overall elected experience then Hillary/.

She got to the Senate without any elected experience. Can you imagine anyone else without the support of her Hubby President that could walse into NewYork and take the nomination for senator. Please. I'd like to see a woman too - but one that did not do it on the back her husband.

Posted by: Vet SK | March 11, 2008 7:39 PM

Senator Hillary Clinton, is so upset with Barack Obama because he happened to be a black man winning in a Presidential race. She cannot fathom a black getting more delagates, more popular votes and don't mention raising sooo much money, and of course the crowds he capture. Well, Mrs. Clinton, stop showing your weakness my attacking Mr. Obama.

Certainly, you will get used to his fame and his winning statues before November. Just try to get a grip and realize the man is smart, bad, intelligent, diplomatic, poised, and well read.

I take my hat off to our next President of the United States!!!!!!!

Posted by: June Watson | March 11, 2008 7:43 PM

The Texas caucus inaccurately over-allocates delegates to Obama, because only a fraction of primary voters (who are all eligible to caucus) actually attended the caucus. The primary count is a true representation of Texas' nominee, and that was Hillary Clinton by more than 100,000 votes (which is more than the total amount of voters in some states Obama won).

The comment about soccer moms blindly voting for Hillary is uncalled for, and can be countered by black voters voting for Obama because he is black. I have even seen some blacks state that is the reason they are voting for him on tv.

Posted by: Digory | March 11, 2008 7:44 PM

I think the DNC should be looking at who is leading in pledged delegates and popular votes, like Richardson, and many other Democrats have said. Party infighting only leads to a Republican win in November.
I also don't believe an Obama/Clinton ticket would be healthy because the Clintons would try to run things there way and try to outshine Obama at every chance.
I could see Obama/Edwards being a great team, if the slim chance of John being up to it. We would see a lot of very liberal pro-middle and lower class legislation. And less hyper-reactive media.

Posted by: dublindemon | March 11, 2008 7:46 PM

There are a lot of educated people from PA who will see right through the desperation of Hillary's arrogant and demeaning campaign rhetoric. She's a candidate who is obviously in trouble and will do or say anything to win. Obamba might not win PA but its not going to be a blowout in Hillary's favor either.

Posted by: Followtheleader | March 11, 2008 7:46 PM

The president is the mouth piece to the world. Do you want the shrill Hillary or someone who can talk and people will listen. And shrill has nothing to do with Hillary being a woman. There are several woman out there that I would potentially vote for. The Gov's of Alaska and Kansas are good examples. But now we have an incredible candidate Barack Obama. He has been in Washington just long enough to learn the ropes but has not been corrupted by its politics. As Barack puts it, Washington is the place that good ideas go to die..and Hillary died a long, long time ago.

Go Obama!

Posted by: Steve L | March 11, 2008 7:47 PM

Clinton's unethical, and Barack's inexperienced, but I'll bet anyone anything that neither will create fewer jobs than Bush, or preside over worse stock market returns.

Posted by: Macaca | March 11, 2008 7:48 PM

OK, so enumerate for me the list of accomplishments that uniquely qualify Barack Obama to be president. An impressive legislative record? Years of senate experience with active and prominent roles on important senate committees? Key roles in sponsoring important legislation? An impressive public service history? The answer to all of these questions is clearly no.
It is indeed troubling that when speaking of his unique attributes, qualities that will supposedly allow him to affect profound changes in the way governemnt operates, his supporters are reduced to vague idealistic murmurings about " a new era", "change", and "open goverment". That he has been catapulted to a place of prominence based upon a cult of personality, not accomplishment, is a sad testimonial to the "rock star" era criteria that many Americans apply when deciding to whom to select to govern. I remain thoroughly unconvinced.
Instead of occupying time and energy engaging in Hillary (and Bill)-bashing (which has clearly the media's favorite recreational sport) let's engage in a frank discussion as to what does or does not qualify these individuals to assume the most important leadership position in our very troubled nation.

You say you are for Hillary because of Health Care yet that is what she totally failed at in 1993. She claims she was co-president for 7 more years, and then has been a Senator for 6 (on the back of her hubby -certainly not on her own fruition) and she has not tried for health care for 15 years. My gosh, how can you support HIllary for health care when her record is one of failure and then a further failure to follow up? Please answer svreader

Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton need to go join their KKK friends

Posted by: Hilary is a racist | March 11, 2008 7:53 PM

Five reasons why, we must support the position of Senator Obama

1) The proposal of Senator Obama is a fundamental commitment, with the American dream of leadership, security and freedom.

2)The strategy Obama, to disable the current economic crisis, is realistic.

3)The social program planned for the administration Obama, contains the three basic pillars of American society. Education in all level, universal social security, and access to decent housing.

4)Obama has a popular acceptance, conducive to formalize the unification the american mainland, under a single administration.

5)Every 50 years appears on the face of the earth, an opportunity to improve the quality of life of the human civilization. I understand that we are at that time and Obama our catalyst it is. We can take this occasion, or wait 50 years more, for a similar event.

Your wisdom has the final decision.

Weak or powerful. Can hand that you are?

Mississippian .. you claim that Obama is trying to mess up the ticket. Obama has played by the rules all the way. How can you say that he was he is the one messing things up when it getting near impossible for Hillary to win because Obama is so far ahead? Do you not read the news and look at the result or look at the polls. Obama is 600,000 votes ahead and then way ahead in the delegates. That is because Obama has been trying to bring in all the states not just the ones with the huge delegate counts. And it seems like you are from MS, do you think Hillary cares about the few delegates your state represents like Obama does?

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/3/6/123948/7839/356/470517:

Since the name of Chicago defendant Antoin 'Tony' Rezko has come up in national debate, it seems fair to look at donations from other defendants in Chicago's "Operation Board Games."

Of the other five defendants, three have donated to the Clintons or to Clinton supporters, three have donated mostly to Republicans, and at least two have donated to Obama's political opponents. None have donated to Obama.

Predictably, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the national co-chair of Mrs. Clinton's presidential campaign, Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, also got Rezko donations.

Here is the rundown on his fellow defendants, from FEC data via www.opensecrets.org, in descending order by amounts donated:

* Stuart Levine: 210 donations for federal candidates, totaling $255,350, mostly to Republicans. Biggest contributions to Illinois Republican Party and to National PAC. One $5000 donation to the Illinois Democratic Party. Most individual donations to GOP candidates from GWBush on down, except for a few $2000 donations to Joe Lieberman, Mark Green of NY, who now appears frequently on MSNBC as a Clinton supporter, and Illinois State Comptroller Daniel W. Hynes, whose father, Thomas C. Hynes, was formerly a Cook County Assessor. Dan Hynes was among Barack Obama's primary opponents in the Illinois U.S. Senate race in 2003. Levine donated $1000 to Bill Clinton in 1995. Levine has not donated to Obama.

* Joseph Cari, Jr: pulled out his checkbook 137 times from 1993 on, giving $193,836 under Joseph and $8958 under Joe to candidates for federal office, mostly to Dems. Further donations from family members incl $1000 to Bill Clinton in 1995. Biggest Cari donations went to the DNC and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Individual donations, usually $1000 apiece, to Dem candidates across the country incl the natl figures--Gore, Kerry, Kennedys--and others incl Robert Torricelli in NJ, Chuck Robb in VA, and even the late Paul Wellstone in MN ($250). Cari donated $2000 to Bill Clinton in 1995, another $1000 to Clinton campaign manager David Wilhelm, $500 and $1000 to Hillary Clinton in 2000 and 2003, and donated twice to HILLPAC in 2002. The Hillary Clinton campaign has apparently returned the $1000 but not the other donations. Cari also donated several times to Southern Wine & Spirits, a PAC donating to both major parties which has also donated to both Clintons. Cari has also donated to several Illinois Democratic candidates including Gov. Blagojevich and former Congressman Dan Rostenkowski. No contribution to Obama individually is listed, but the Obama campaign has returned $1439 from apportioned committee contributions.

* P. Nicholas Hurtgen, former Bear Stearns manager in Chicago: 48 federal contributions from Hurtgen and his wife in recent years, totaling $47,787, almost entirely to GOP candidates--$5000+ to the Republican National Committee, $4000 to GWBush, most of the rest to other Republicans. However, the Hurtgens have also donated $2000 to Rahm Emanuel and $7000 to Mark Green of NY, a Clinton supporter.

What Obama did is worse than just about anything, because he shafted the poorest of the poor who had elected him to look out for their interests.

How will she be able to tell us what Al Quaeda is doing if she can't even tell what Bill is doing?

Posted by: Matt | March 11, 2008 8:08 PM

People are so quick to jump at someone who says "Change" but in reality Obama is not a change agent so he cannot effect a change.

Secondly, Barak "Hussein" Obama's middle name is exactly what you see. This is a religious name that is for "life." It is not like religions in the U.S. where individuals are free to change. Hussein indicates he is and always will be Muselum - the same as Al Queda. And, you want him as a president of the U.S.

PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE, you really need to conduct you own research as opposed to getting caught up on the hype that is being generated from the very terrorist group you say you want your country to protect you from.

Really, this election is being determined by people who cannot think on their own. Your time is running short.

Wake Up.

svreader is from Chicago? Don't speak for us.

I seriously doubt Hillary Clinton better knows what the poor of southside Chicago needs better than Obama.

Hillary Clinton's experience is being a wife. As a woman, her campaign is a big slap in the face to women and feminists everywhere. I can only hope she fails, and does not represent what it means to be the first woman president. She does not deserve it.

The one thing America doesn't need, is to have it's symbol be a "b*tchy" woman with no class or self-respect. She stayed with Bill to persue her political career. Isn't that obvious? She will stop at nothing to "win."

Her camp likes to try and dig up things about Obama, who has shown nothing but class through this whole process ...

Well, why doesn't anyone meantion that she is a Republican? She always has been.

I would rather vote for McCain. And if she is the candidate, I think a lot of people would share this sentiment.

Be careful what you wish for, Obamaites. You may get Obama's Change he wants to bring to Washington, and if so, we will think Bush II was the best president we ever had.

Obama, who has been friends of radicals and criminals for 20 years, will fracture this entire country and we will be the least impressive power in the world.

How can you ignore the fact that one of Saddam Hussein's side kicks has Obama under his thumb, with contributions and money to buy his 1.9 million dollar mansion.

This guy, Auchi, was Saddam Hussein's arms dealer - he used money from the oil and from the UN Food program to secure arms for Saddam Hussein.

How can you be so niave to think that Obama was so naive that he doesn't remember meeting Auchi in Chicago at a meeting. If Obama is that naive, then he is ignorant, and still shouldn't be the President of the United States.

If Obama becomes the president, I don't think the people are going to care any more and will lose all respect for this country. gw.

Please do not overlook the destructive smears against Sen. Obama pushed by Clinton supporters on this board. They have and will continue to claim that Obama has attacked Clinton. But there is no equivalency to the attacks they face. Clinton has merely been called triangulating, ambitious and self interested - three claims which any politician be accused of. On the other hand, Obama is attacked for both his race and his religion through whisper campaigns and surrogate code words. He is smeared by Clinton in the worst sense of the word. There is no equivalency between these attacks - Clinton began the negative spiral after Iowa when many of her closest advisors, including her husband, began spreading racist rumors that don't need to be repeated here. Obama has returned fire, but with a sense of proportion and self-restraint.

It is un-American to hold one candidate to a lower standard, just because she has a name many of us recognize and respect - to allow her to get away with behavior that would outrage us if we saw our children or neighbors acting that way.

It is un-American to turn a blind eye to racial and religious smears coming from a candidate that bears a responsibility to her party and country to exercise self-restraint.

Hillary Clinton - a person I once respected - has conducted her campaign in a terribly destructive manner - both to the party, and to our general sense of community. Democrats should not reward this.

It may not matter in the end, but I certainly will not vote for her. If she gets the nod, the dems can count me out.

I am from Chicago. That newscast is from 2007. The information given is very sided, just as with all media claims. If you really RESEARCH the claim, you would know that a lot of time innocent people are connected to those who are not saints. For instance, the NY govenor that was just caught in the prostituion ring. He is connected to Hillary. Hillary was an advocate of health care bills during her husband's presidency. She was told to stop advocating for universal health care, and she was given a kick back ($$$). Likewise, Hillary's husband (former President Clinton), was caught cheating on his wife numerous times.

Plain and simple. Being connected to criminals does not mean that you are a bad person. You can be friends with people that do really AWFUL things...it doesn't mean that you are awful too.

Ferraro's comments are problematic (and offensive) in so many ways. For moral reasons alone, Clinton should denounce and reject them and FIRE her. On a more practical note, how on earth does Hillary think she will win the swing states (in a general election) like Ohio or Pennsylvania without a large African American turnout in the cities? By allowing her campaign advisors to make such racist comments with impunity, Clinton has just lost a significant number of votes in the general election should she become the nominee.

Ms Ferraro's comments continue playing the racial card for Hillary. Her comment smacks of the same racism as Isaiah Thomas' remark that Larry Bird only got noticed as a star because he is white. This just goes to show that Ferraro never belonged on the ticket with Mondale and she joins the hall of infamy with Spitzer, another Clinton supporer.

Obama betrayed the people who supported him in Chicago.

This clip is from Chicago's most respected TV news station.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDHsHM0laT8&feature=related

According to his own local Chicago Newspapers and TV stations, he was a lousy State Senator.

He didn't do his job and people suffered and died because of it.

Posted by: svreader | March 11, 2008 8:16 PM

You people trying to expose Obama before the general election will not succeed. The Republican machine is saving those Chicago goodies for when he is the nominee. That's when the "media" will start to give those stories the attention. How are they going to tare him down if they don't build him up??

Posted by: Joe | March 11, 2008 8:16 PM

Ferraro is spouting nonsense. Thinking women such as Camille Paglia, Peggy Noonan and Maureen Dowd have all come out against Hillary. Particularly Dowd, whose recent op-ed in the New York Times excoriated Clinton. They can see her for the corrupt, self-centered fraud that she is. Yes, Americans will vote for a woman President, just not this woman. I am sure if Condoleezza Rice pitches her hat into the ring in 2012 she will give Obama a run for his money.

It is also worth noting in the AP interview, Clinton said, "I do not agree with that," and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters - on both sides, because we both have this experience - say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

One of Obama's people calls Hillary a monster, she's gone. One of Hillary's people makes an outrageous racist remark, and we get a waffling response. And this is the woman who has experience and steely resolve? BS.

The republicans are now on the fence simply becasue they don't know yet who is the target to shoot. The day they will open fire on Obama he will melt in one week. Sad but truth.

i'd like to hear the Obama supporters on this specific issue.

What he did in Chicago is horrible.

Obama's going to be toast once "Obama's Slums" hits the bookstores, and I'm sure lots of newspapers and TV news programs are doing stories on it as well.

Posted by: boblondon | March 11, 2008 8:20 PM

I agree - Geraldines comments are based on fact - no one can really argue that most of the black popluation (like 80%) have voted for Obama - it's so close to a fact it seems absurd to be offended by it - if it weren't for the black vote he would not be there - it is racially motivated (by the divisive Obama!)

Posted by: richardm | March 11, 2008 8:20 PM

Of course, G.Ferraro was right. Would Mississippians vote for Obama Barrack if he was Oriental? My only regret is that he was not a real ordinary American but born of a foreigner father, lived in a foreign country and enjoyed a rather privileged life that has nothing in common with black Americans. It's like he cuts in the line or something.

However, usually less than 10% or fewer of black voters have crossed lines and voted for Hillary.

I am English. It seems to me that the talk about Obama having little experience is absurd. He has been in the state senate, the federal senate, and practiced law in the community and is in his 40s. No one that I have read has pointed out that Kennedy had no experience to speak of when he was elected. Or is it the case that he is now such an icon that no one dares to comment. Furthermore what does the experience of Hilary Clinton actually amount to. Does she really know and understand the point of view of Europeans, of Arabs, of Chinese. She will rely on expert advice just as Obama will do and as any president must. You might then consider who will be likely to hire the best honest, dispassionate appraisers. Rather than the acolytes of the oil companies, the armaments industry, and the gun lobby all of whom frighten the rest of us.

Posted by: Tim | March 11, 2008 8:28 PM

RACISM... the last item in Hillary Clinton's kitchen sink strategy. The moral of the story is... it's ok for a black man to run for president as long as no one takes him/her seriously. It's alright for a black man to run for president as long as he remains a fringe candidate with not much popular support.

No one ever said that Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton got to where they did because they were "black". Mr Obama has another reason to to talk about the okidoki dance. ARGHHHH racism has again reared its ugly head, and it has Hillary Clinton's name all over.

Does Geraldine Ferraro know that we would not even know her name if she were not the first woman VP candidate--notority solely based upon her gender (which I share). She of all people ought to know what it is like to be discounted as "token" because of gender or ethnicity. Perhaps she has never heard of the golden rule.

Posted by: | March 11, 2008 8:31 PM

Gee, with all the Clintonites spreading absurd and false stories on here, I wouldn't have guessed that this is a reputable newspaper and not a rag.

Truth here.

Hillary and Bill Clinton have not released their tax returns since 2002. Hillary has not been willing to release the proof that shows what she did as part of her 35 years of experience.

At first she blamed the Bush administration for why she didn't have her White House papaers released. She hasn't given a reason as to why her tax returns couldn't be vetted for proof. The Clinton's have refused to release the donars of Clinton library.

Why is this important?

If you're going to claim 35 years of expeience and truth in government, and you're asking people to accept this and trust you, you owe it to the people you're asking to trust you to see the proof of your words. Claiming isn't enough.

BTW...I see Obama returned all of his Resko donations. Have the Clinton's returned their millions in donations they got from Resko? I don't think so.

Well, at least, the clinton's look good in their pictures with Resko. Google it and see for yourself.

Classic female: shooting off one's mouth to win some Nasty-points before doing any pre-emptive thinking first.

Now suppose Ferraro's finger were on the nuclear trigger and she ran with her first thought like this?

Men of all colors, white, black, Asian, Hispanic, think for a moment about your psycho ex girlfriend. Would you want your psycho ex to answer the red phone?

(Sobbing) "I can't talk right now... he's with another woman, I know he is... sorry... sniffle... I just can't focus this second, can you call me later after I smudge the room with sage smoke and listen to some uplifting girl power songs?"

Ferraro's typical female lack of self-control is your exclusive crystal ball into the emotional hysteria and real and present danger of a Hillary presidency.

JUST SAY NO.

"Clinton brought up reports that while Obama took a tough stand against NAFTA in Ohio, where the agreement is highly unpopular, one of his advisers was signaling to the Canadian government that this was largely political posturing."

Does HRC have a conscience? By now it is well know that it was Hillary who spoke to the Canadian government yet she continues her lie.

Read: Clinton's NAFTA switcheroo and Canadian meddling

"the Canadian press is reporting that it was actually the Clinton campaign that sent word to the Canadian government not to take the anti-NAFTA talk to seriously."

Somehow, by the time the story made it to print, Canada's conservative Prime Minister's office had "leaked" a memo that said it was Obama's campaign that was saying not to worry about NAFTA. The Clinton part of the story was ignored.

Two questions: what is Canada doing meddling in our election and why was the Clinton campaign's involvement in this dropped from the story?

It would appear that ,,,

Thing is that the whole "big Clinton wins" on Mar 4th yielded a single-digit gain for Clinton. However, nobody seems to report that on the certification in California, Obama picked up 4 delegates compared to the earlier projections, while Clinton lost 4. Which means that this little thing alone netted as big a swing of 8 delegates ad the entire Mar 4th. When's the Washington Post going to report about that?

The press is totally irresponsible and doesn't even make a passing effort to get there facts correct. Once again, someone claiming Hillary won Texas when the simple fact is she did not.

And Geraldine Ferraro should be ashamed of herself. Obama is in this race for two reasons, first and most importantly his 2004 speech at the DNC, and second, there's no one else out there worth supporting.

Posted by: Lewis | March 11, 2008 8:40 PM

If Hillary Clinton's "foreign policy experience" is going to be one of her talking points, I'd like to hear what she has to say about Rwanda. What did she do about Rwanda? Did she kick her husband to go in and rescue 800,000 innocent men, women and children or did she tell him not to risk American lives after Somalia? What is her role? What is her responsibility? What would she do now if something silmilar happened?

Obama did not win the white vote, Hillary lost it by her husband insulting black voters before the SC primary. He was trailing Hillary and even Edwards among black voters before then. Hillary received significant black votes in New York. Whatever little support she has among black voters is evaporating every second after her failure to ask Ferraro to step down. Imagine if Ferraro had said something similar about Jewish people, the uproar would have reverberated around the country in 2 seconds.

Senator Hillary Clinton, is so upset with Barack Obama because he happened to be a black man winning in a Presidential race. How a news article discussing polls in Mississippi has degraded into a childish mud slinging contest between Obama and Clinton supporters I will never know. But it is evidence of a sad state of affairs amongst Democrats.

The Democratic Party has two of the sharpest and most talented leaders it has seen in perhaps over a decade, and yet the result is turmoil. Rather than unite and usher these two toward victory, we have elected to divide in half and tear them apart. Essentially, we have taken lemonade and turne
