LoCo's Moving to LoudounExtra.com

Today we are excited to launch LoudounExtra.com, a new web site dedicated entirely to Loudoun County news, sports, entertainment, and the people in these communities that comprise our neighborhoods, schools and social scenes. You will find Living in LoCo featured prominently in the center of the page, where we will continue our conversation about Loudoun's hot topics.

You will also find information relevant to your life, such as traffic cameras in with views of main roads -- Route 28 at Waxpool and Route 50 west of the Loudoun County Parkway. Search the comprehensive guides to learn more about restaurants, schools, and places of worship. And, of course, we will bring you daily local news from Washington Post and washingtonpost.com reporters, as well as all Loudoun-related stories from our print editions.

And this is just the beginning; lots of new features are in the works. We also want to hear what you think about the new site, so please put your thoughts in the comments section of the blog. The more you tell us, the better we can serve you.

Looking forward to seeing you in our new space!

How do you actually see the site? I tried and nothing is coming up. Has anybody tested it from a non-WP IP?

You either are getting an overwhelming response or have a poor server, the site crashed only a few hours after it launched with content.

This is a smart move by the Post, whose reporters have only over the past couple of years become aware that Loudoun County even exists. But for this to work, the Post is going to have to move beyond the McMansion stories and the fluff "look at the stupid people in Loudoun" stories like this morning's article on crossing the road in Leesburg. This happens in every suburb in the DC area, but has the Post ever written about all the people darting across Rt 7 or Rt 50 in Arlington?

The Post could bring good perspective, more investigative reporting and more experienced reporters to news coverage in this area. But if they don't, I don't think they'll get many new subscribers. After all, many of the local papers (Leesburg Today, Loudoun Times Mirror) are delivered free.

To whom it may concern at the Post:

The anonymous poster at 12:45 makes some good points. I would add that fact-checking beyond the cliches would be beneficial.

Case in point is the story this a.m. on no sidewalks--well, first let's not forget that Loudoun has more miles of unpaved roads than any other county in the state (look it up), not to mention instituted a Historic Roadways District under the preceding Board that would ensure that many remained that way, and experienced a by-right explosion from 2000 to 2003 that added over two thousand units in Dulles South alone. Could be that contributes to the 14% sidewalk rate.

In addition, the article referenced us as the fastest growing county. In the present tense.

We held that title for one year, four years ago.

The year we held it, a county in one of the Carolinas made the top 100 by adding 60 people. LA County didn't make the list at all, even though it added more people that year than LIVE in Loudoun. That's because the title is granted on percentage of EXISTING population added.

Look it up.

Label the traffic cams. Where on Rt. 50 is this? From the looks of the light traffic, it must be somewhere west of Gilbert's corner.

I'd love to read your blog--but I'm getting an error message on the new site...

Posted by: | July 18, 2007 03:42 PM

Don't like the new site at all. I tried to post and was given a "page not found" error message-then another error message when I tried to go back. Not user friendly at all. Plus, it takes away from Tammis blog!

Posted by: | July 19, 2007 07:42 AM

Thank you all for your comments and taking the time to move to the new site. I am sharing the issues with the tech team and we are all looking forward to having the email and comments issues resolved.

The new site is great and like anything new, ESPECIALLY a website, we have to be understanding of the tech issues they are having. One really doesn't know what's going to happen until a site goes live. As Loudoun residents we should all be supportive of this effort by the post. A little patience goes a long way.

Hey! We can't post to the other blog!

Says it can't find the page we're trying to post to!!!

Posted by: Buffettbassman | July 19, 2007 01:41 PM

I think it's a conspiracy. The post is trying to take away all of Tammis supporters and undermine her efforts! I can't post either. Even though I am signed in.

Hey Tammi!

You better bonk someone over at WaPo on the head to fix this.

If they need a real Internet professional, tell them to look me up. I'll fix this for them!

What's the deal with those traffic cameras on the new site? They aren't streaming and you need to hit refresh to get them to change. Not very effective, people. www.nbc4.com at least has real time traffic routing...

Posted by: | July 20, 2007 08:04 AM

This is horrible. I guess the man is really trying to take Tammi down. I think I'm going to cancel my post subscription.
