Jacobs Waived (updated)
The Mystics waived point guard and off season pickup Amber Jacobs after practice today. Brought in to help fill the void left by Nikki Teasley, Jacobs failed to assert herself as a ready starter in training camp and again when Nikki Blue missed two weeks with a high ankle sprain. Jacobs averaged 1.7 points, 1.8 assists and 1.3 turnovers over six games this season.
Although Jacobs already seemed like the odd point guard out with Crystal Smith's arrival -- she hasn't played in the Mystics past six games, her last appearance was against Phoenix on June 3 -- she became even more of a non-factor when Blue returned much earlier than expected from her ankle injury. I'm not surprised by this move. Is anyone? Or does anyone think they should have kept her?
And hello again all. I'm back after a week covering the AST Dew Tour in Baltimore -- I have a horrible sunburn to prove it -- and ready to blog away again.
(Update)
As was already mentioned in the comments, the Mystics picked up small forward Kendra Wecker, a former first-round pick who was released by San Antonio before the regular season, after releasing Jacobs. Sorry I didn't get the info up here sooner, for awhile it looked like the Jacobs move would be the only one happening today.
Wecker (5-11, 172) averaged 4.3 points and 1.9 rebounds per game primarily off the bench during her three seasons with San Antonio. The signing reunites Wecker with former Kansas State teammate Laurie Koehn. More on this move tomorrow.

I agree with the above comment. The Mystics should have taken Sharnee Zoll then they would of had 2 ACC rookies that are familiar with each other. Putting Zoll on the roster would have made her closer to home and more fans in the seats!

I agree 100%. Mystics got nothing out of the #2 pick, and there were many good players available at the time - Leilani Mitchell being one of them. The Hargrove era has been a disaster for the Mystics.

The Mystics website is reporting that Amber Jacobs was waived to make room for Kendra Wecker, who the Mystics signed today. Wecker is a small forward and had been released by San Antonio prior to the season.

"The Hargrove era has been a disaster for the Mystics."
Yeah, but which players should they have obtained instead of the ones that they did?
In 2005, they took Temeka Johnson at #6. The listing is at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_WNBA_Draft
Since she was ROY, I'm assuming that many thought she was a good selection at the time. Who should they have taken instead?
In 2006, they took Tamara James and Nikki Blue. The listing is at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_WNBA_Draft
Who should they have taken instead?
In 2007, they took Bernice Mosby and Gillian Goring. The listing is at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_WNBA_Draft
Who should they have taken instead?
In looking at the 2006 draft class, when we took James, La'Tangela Atkinson, Tye'sha Fluker, Barbara Turner, Sherill Baker, and Ann Strother were still available. None are with the teams that took them, and only Turner is putting up numbers that jump out at you.
When we took Blue, Mistie Williams, Erin Grant, and Megan Duffy were available, but again none of them jump out.
In 2007, when we took Mosby, Katie Gearlds, Ashley Shields, Alison Bales, Ivory Latta, Kamesha Hairston, and Camille Little were avaiable. We also could have gotten Sidney Spencer with our second round pick.
During the draft, Hargrove told the Post's Dan Steinberg that the team chose Goring instead of Bales because Bales is a high-post player, and the team wanted a low-post player. I'm assuming they stayed away from Spencer because shooting guard wasn't a need, and away from Latta because point guard wasn't a need.
On trades, Teasly is gone, but I think many would agree that we're getting the better of the Currie-Melvin trade because Sanford was ready to step in and fill Melvin's shoes. Also, while the Milton-Jones for McWilliams-Franklin trade may be helping both teams about equally, we did get a first rounder out of it.
I'm just curious about how folks would build a better mousetrap than the one we've got.

I would DRAFT ANOTHER POINT GUARD.... Kristi TOliver!!! I like nikki Blue but having her and kristi would only ake us that much better and the Toliver and Langhorne connection would be in effect. Crystal is ready to contribute more and I feel having a scoring point guard would allow alana to tear it up....Her scoring will go up, her rebounds will go up, her steals, blocks, and I believe her assists will stay up there because she will be dishing off of penetration instead of staying at the top.....Even having ( I HATE TO SAY IT) Renee Montogomery (Uconn Yek) Might help some because she can score and she's quick from end to end with the ball in her hands.. Her decision making is questionable though...

Oh yea and good look on kendra wrecker...If her knee if healthy she is a really good back up at the three position who can rebound like he**, can score off the dribble and take contact she adds toughness..and is more then capable of takin soe of this pressure off Mo...I believe once comfortable she can even go over to the 2 is they wanna go big on the peremiter with alana, Kendra, and Mo all about or are 6 feet....

RE: my comment about the Hargrove era. From the games so far this year, the Mystics are a barely competitive team. The easiest part of the schedule is behind them and I can't see many wins over the coming 6 weeks. Why? The team has glaring weaknesses at point guard and small forward (behind Currie). The power forward position is way underperforming (what's wrong with Nakia?). And except for Coco and Langhorne the bench is unreliable. The coach seems lost much of the time.
Who is to blame, except for the GM?

Can I get my money back on the Amber Jacobs jersey I ordered last week? While she wasn't what you'd call a "world-beater," I thought she did a solid enough job to warrant staying through the season. And we shelled out all that money on that offer sheet to Jacobs. Linda Hargrove strikes again!

the mystics made a big mistake by waiving aj. she needed time to jell. she will be missed. aj will get picked up by someone most likely a champion west coast team. good luck aj, we will miss you. keep playing hard

Hargrove has to go! Her excuses are beyond old, and her lack of ability to scout professional talent continues to drive this franchise into the ground. For example, no other WNBA GM coveted Lindsey Pluimer, and taking her #20 overall seemed like a move to make Nikki Blue happy. Didn't work. There were point guards like Leilani Mitchell, Sharnee' Zoll, and Kimberly Beck available at that second round slot. These are young players who could've competed with Blue for the starting job and would've given us diverse options at that position. I'm not saying that either of the three would've made a significant impact on this year's team, but we could've had a chance to develop one of those kids into a competent WNBA point guard.
If the Mystics needed a forward, then Crystal Kelly was available at that #20 pick as well. If the Mystics needed a wing, Morenike Atunrase was available at that #20 pick. These are players who graded out higher than Pluimer based on their college careers and their being in attendance at the WNBA Draft.
Offering Amber Jacobs was a desperation move. The Mystics should have seen the writing on the wall when Minnesota didn't bother to put up a fight to retain Jacobs. It's not like their current crop of point guards are setting the world on fire, but they determined that those young guards are worth having over a supposed veteran in Jacobs.

The Mystics would've been better off drafting Sharnee Zoll, Kimberly Beck or Leilani Mitchell in the 2nd round instead of signing Amber Jacobs.
