Lineups and some minor notes
All right, a couple of posts today, probably.
But first, I'll speak up for Vandy alum Dave Sheinin: Was that a walk? I mean, tough shot and all. But he did change his pivot foot, didn't he?
Oh, and while we're talking about college basketball, Bob Knight is here. Hysterical sight, really, to see Tony La Russa, his good buddy, hitting fungoes to the infielders, and having Knight stand there and take the throws and then flip the ball to La Russa.
Lineups:
St. Louis:
Aaron Miles -- 6
Skip Schumaker -- 8
Albert Pujols -- 3
Chris Duncan -- 7
Preston Wilson -- 9
Adam Kennedy -- 4
Jolbert Cabrera -- 5
Gary Bennett -- 2
Kip Wells -- 1
Washington:
Lopez -- 4
Guzman -- 6
Zimmerman -- 5
Kearns -- 9
Casto -- 7
Lee -- 3
Flores -- 2
Logan -- 8
Hill -- 1
Spoke to player development guru Bob Boone for a bit this morning, and they're starting to make decisions on where to send some of the top prospects. If I lived in Hagerstown, Md., I might be getting excited. The low Class A team could be stocked with Chris Marrero (first-round pick last year), SS Esmailyn Gonzalez (Dominican teenager signed for first-round money last year), Univ. of Maryland product Justin Maxwell and others. They could even move shortstop (and best-selling horror author) Stephen King to third base in Hagerstown.
Right-hander Colton Willems, who missed some time with a back problem earlier in the spring, is throwing again, but he'll likely start the year by remaining in Viera for extended spring training and could pitch in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League to start.
Class AA Harrisburg will have top starting prospect Collin Balester and top reliever Zech Zinicola, but either could move up quickly. (I'm betting we see both by the end of the year at RFK. You know how Bowden keeps saying, "We don't want to rush Balester"?? Well, I seem to remember, late in the summer of 2005, he was saying, "We don't want to rush Zimmerman." Yes, it's different with a pitcher, but ...)
Beautiful day here at the park. Big crowd (of Cardinals fans). Talk to you later.

Of course it was a walk. The final shot should not have counted. Vanderbilt should have won the game by one point, not Georgetown. Gumbel and the other CBS guys showed it clearly, just after it happened. GRRR!! (Dave, VU grad school 1992)

Thanks for the updates. The weather here is cool and cloudy with light drizzle. You ain't missing nothing. Hopefully the Nats can keep on their hot streak and ride it right into the regular season.

I wonder why they'd move King to 3B and not 2B.

Probably should ask NFA, but I'm too lazy to click over there. But why is there a low class A and a high class A? Especially when there's a gulf coast league too. What does one do that the other wouldn't? I realize the farm system is shifting a little, with more and more rooks being groomed and pulled straight from AA rather than AAA. Just something I've wondered about.

Well, Hill now has a spring ERA of under 1.00. Let's hope that somehow he and our other talented-but-injury-prone players (Patterson, Snelling, Kearns, for instance) can stay in the lineup. I didn't even bother mentioning the snakebit Escobar and Johnson in that group.

How about that heavy-hitting Guzman!

Thanks for the updates, Barry - and the minor league info as well. Interested that Willems sounds like he'll be starting in the GCL. Seems a bit low. Why not SS-A ball? Did he mention anything about Gibson or Englund, the other high-end draft picks from 2006? Or Hassan Pena?
Jeez, all these questions. Good thing you don't have to watch the game, or do any actual reporting, or anything like that.
Keep up the good work!

barry, been back to panera recently?
I'm not sold on travis lee. I think Dimitri Young breaks camp as the regular 1st baseman with Robert Fick as the backup. Maybe Ronnie Belliard (or even Kory Casto) could be the emergency 1st baseman?

I hear that I was dehydrated and that I needed an IV. Is that true?

Barry,
Having had the opportunity to see all of the players in a training situation, who's really the fastest runner on the team and who'd make the 4 x 100 relay squad?

Barry--
Talk to me about Logan...what happened? I just heard through the grapevine. Is it serious?
Does this mean that Snelling and Church are the starting outfielders now (along with Kearns, of course)? Do we now keep Casto?
Of course, these are probably the exact questions that you're chasing down now.

OK - What did Logan do to himself??? And how bad is he hurt?

The Washington Nationals have yet to send their season tickets to their ticket holders. As of today, the Nats are saying at their web site that the tickets will not arrive before Wednesday -- five days before Opening Day -- if then.
Basically, this is possible disaster. What if Fex Ex -- the delivery service -- has a problem and tickets are delayed even further? What if many of them are loss in the mail? Etc. With the short time period now available, there isn't much room for error.
The questions to ask: Why did this happen -- and why are the tickets being sent from Canada? Was this the Nats doing it on the cheap?
Why isn't the Post covering this story?

NOOK NICKED...HOW LO GAN IT GET. Hope this isn't serious. We need his speed in an otherwise fairly slow outfield. His bat, we'll just have to wait & see. Radio broadcast thinks it's a groin, is it?

I'm with Andrew on moving King to 3B, why not 2B, no future w/ this organization at the 5. It tells me they are thinking of grooming him up to trade him for pitching. Not a bad idea.
Logan hurt is good news for Casto making the roster. By the way, I was upset you didn't quote me in the Notebook about Casto being hard to cut, I called that one. Aren't baseball nerds who respond to blogs reliable sources for reporters?? I'll get over it.

Has anyone inspected the Cardinal dugout to be sure it is alcohol free today?
