Pitching pool wrapup (and another loss)
So by now we have nearly 50 respondents to the pitching pool question posted earlier today. Thanks for playing. (And if the raccoon had stuck around, the Nationals might have used him today. Though I think he was right-handed, and his career ended a few seasons ago after small-mammal Tommy John surgery, performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.)
My guess (prior to the first workout, which was three weeks ago):
Patterson
Williams
Redding
Hill
Perez
I do not, for the record, think I am going to be right. But I want to see if more people post overnight, and I'll give you my updated prediction tomorrow morning.
I think it's interesting that everyone just simply has Patterson as the No. 1, that no one went off the board and predicted he'd be hurt by Opening Day. No evidence that that will happen. He's feeling good and is throwing well. But I think it would've been a good gamble to maybe lap the field.
Of course, there are no prizes in this. I'm not as good at this as Steinberg. (Who is, really? I still can't link things.)
The game: Braves 10, Nationals 6. Schneider drives in four. A bunch of guys pitch poorly, with Chris Michalak and Ryan Wagner as the only ones who didn't give up earned runs. Jermaine Van Buren (two innings, two runs, four Ks) and Fruto (1-2/3 innings, the back-to-back homers) were roughed up. Billy Traber, a man who appeared in a lot of those rotation guesses, went an inning, gave up three hits and a run.
Afterward, GM Jim Bowden spent about seven or eight minutes in Acta's office. The manager said they were preparing for the first cut, which will come Thursday. Maybe that's the game we'll play tomorrow -- who's first to go.
That's it for today. Talk to you in the morning.
(This entire day of Nationals Journal brought to you by Barry Svrluga's old computer, thought to be dead on March 5 but revived on March 6. I have my new one here, too, and I think I'll fire it up tomorrow.)

Hill
Traber
Redman
Simontacchi
(though I wish I could put Chico's name in the rotation It would be better for all involved if he had at least a little more time in the minors.)
