Live from OPACY
At RFK, they have racing presidents. On the scoreboard at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, they have condiment races. Ketchup your big winner tonight.
Battle of home runs here in the top of the third. Ryan Church's was worth one (and would have been shy of the warning track at RFK?) and Melvin Mora's was worth three, so 3-1 O's.
Some bits and pieces of news.
Manny Acta flip-flopped Felipe Lopez and Cristian ".346" Guzman in the lineup, hitting Guzman leadoff. Acta said this was more about getting Lopez out of his 2-for-37 slump (which became 2-for-38 in the first inning on a fly to left).
"I just want to give 'Lopey' a chance to hit with Guzman on and open the hole for him, and maybe create something. We need to get him going."
Does Guzman like hitting first? "Not really," he said. But oh well. He is a .279 hitter from the top spot in his career (151 games before tonight) as opposed to .263 overall. Career OBP from the top spot is .313, which isn't good enough. But he's hot now, so Acta's trying to take advantage of it.
Daniel Cabrera just walked Lopez, so there's that. Lopez is a career .258 hitter leading off (196 games), a career .262 guy in the 2 hole. OBP is better hitting second (.346/.315).
John Patterson: Bullpen went well. Located his fastball better, he said. "That was the biggest thing that came out of it," he said.
(Remember how I said Lopez walked? Zimmerman just hit a two-run bomb with two outs to tie the game at 3-3.)
Patterson is still slated to make a rehab start Friday at Class A Potomac. But I sense he'll make at least three, and maybe four, of those before he returns. GM Jim Bowden said the pitchers could need as few as two and as many as -- gulp -- six rehab starts (though he was being facetious with the last one). I would say Bergmann could need maybe two (a guess) and Patterson will need more.
Patterson said he struggled with his slider, a pitch he didn't throw in a simulated game Sunday at Potomac.
Other news: Shawn Hill isn't allowed to throw right now. "Up until his left shoulder is healthy, he's not going to throw," Acta said. "That's it. It's as simple as that."
Hill said he hoped that would be Thursday or Friday. He said his elbow feels great, but the feeling all along has been the problems with his left shoulder -- which he briefly separated while diving back into third base in Florida in April -- caused some problems with his elbow. It's a shame, really. Remember his last appearance? Five no-hit innings against the Marlins.
With that, the Journal closes its doors for the evening. Must get to pecking away for the $.35 edition. Enjoy the rest of this one.
Oh, and keep in mind I have a chat Wednesday at 1 p.m. I'll talk to you then.

Ugh... HR to pull it within 3. Will Everyday Colome have to yield to the Chief?

OMG, Guzzie went 0 for 4 already? Hurry, put him back (in the 2-hole), put him back....
Posted by: NatsNut | June 12, 2007 10:41 PM
...or maybe it wasn't the leadoff spot that did it to Guzzie. It was Barry's story this morning. Barry, from now on, when someone's hot, leave them alone. ;)
Posted by: NatsNut | June 12, 2007 10:46 PM
Hmm, Guz didn't do so well at leadoff tonight...
Stick Guzie in the 2 or 3 hole. Put Young in leadoff. Just once. Just for fun.
Especially since we're on the road; I bet we could get some serious first-inning leads... how fun could that be?

Be thankful you're covering MLB, Barry. If this were an NCAA baseball game, you could have your press pass revoked for blogging during a game.... :-)

(in Jan Brady voice) Dmitri, Dmitri, Dmitri. Guzzie, Guzzie, Guzzie.
Hey. I hit a two-run tater tonight. Where's the love??
Sigh. ya'll never write about me....

... I'm beginning to think that all photos of Micah Bowie - at least all of them that reach this part of the solar system - show him with his mouth twisted grotesquely to the side of his face and his left arm twisted totally and unnaturally out of its socket.
... I hope when those of you who visit RFK every once in a while, see him in all his reality see a normal human being.

Teddy would have easily beat Ketchup, what a lame race.

Aw, shucks. Let's give Schneid some love.
Especially since we might not see him in a Nats uniform come September.
Posted by: Hendo | June 13, 2007 8:31 AM
No, not the Schneid -- I thought he was part of the plan, at least for the short term? I've always loved Schneiderman.

He does have some grotesque game pix out there. The one at the link below isn't bad, though he seems to be wearing his game face (in that he's not grinning like it's a grade-school photo opp). Maybe it's just my imagination but it always seems to me that pitchers tend to have their game faces on more often than position players do in official team pix.

The parkway and Camden Yards are nice and all, but don't fail to note that our Class AA Harrisburg Senators are in Bowie this week.
A doubleheader last night, making up a rainout from earlier this month. Interesting outing from Balester who ate the 4-1 loss in the opener, giving up all 4 Bowie runs -- including a 2-run homer -- on 6 hits in 5 innings, striking out 8 and walking 1. Jonathan Albaladejo (say that ten times fast) dropped the nightcap in relief of Dan Foli.
Mike Hinckley, be he prospect or suspect, is supposed to take the hill tonight. Might run out there.

Thanks for the recognition on that recovering journalist thing. Completely out of the blue, but a lot of old writer friends from stops at papers in the past have emailed me because they saw it.
Which means you can stop posting it here. Believe me, I've seen it.

Is the Chief 1.000 on converting save situations since his return? He's only given up one run in that time too, right?
GREAT LINE of the day: "The Orioles' offense, which excels at being stagnant, had nothing for the lefty after Mora's homer."
How about this, just because it makes me happy to point out to all those people (everyone outside of the Nats fan base) that said they would easily be the worst team in baseball:
30. Texas (23-41)
29. Kansas City (25-40)
28. Cincinnati (26-39)
25. Pittsburgh (27-37)
25. Houston (27-37)
25. Washington (27-37)
23. St Louis (27-34)
23. Chicago Sox (27-34)
22. Chicago Cubs (28-35)
21. Baltimore (29-35)
IF I did all that right, then we are only a few games back from being in the middle third of baseball, no? And ahead of several teams that were predicted to do very well this year, including last year's champs and Alfonso Soriano.
Posted by: Section 506 (After moving) | June 13, 2007 10:08 AM
I think they are nipping at the heels of last year's champs and the Chicago teams as far as win-loss percentage, but you have hit on one of my favorite Nationals pastimes: having my morning coffee while looking at the MLB standings in the newspaper and figuring out who is currently worse than or tied with us. Take that, talking heads!
Posted by: natsfan1a | June 13, 2007 10:46 AM
Chief may be 1.000 in converting save situations since his return, but he did convert a tie into a loss by giving up that home run in the top of the ninth to lose last Thursday afternoon's game against Pittsburgh. A tie is not a save situation, but blowing a save and blowing a tie generally result in the same outcome: a loss.

Appreciate the candor of this morning's Notebook item on Patterson, even if it is more than a little worrisome.
Will he EVER get his velocity back? If not, does he have enough guile in his repertoire to make up for lost speed?
You're in our thoughts, JP.

Drove up to see the game last night (first time at Camden Yards since the Nats/O's series last year). Had completely forgotten how rude and ignorant most O's fans are.
I was wearing a Nationals jersey and on my way into the stadium I was heckled by O's fans telling me "Nats Suck." After Mora hits his HR, an O's fan sitting three rows behind me (I was in the front row of the upper deck near home plate and never made any kind of contact with this guy) started yelling at me ... something about the O's being better than the Nats, blah, blah, blah, although I really couldn't understand him since he was missing most of his front teeth. Then when I was exiting the stadium another O's fan walks by me and yells "You suck!"
Proud to say that I never uttered a word or made any obscene hand gestures to any of them as I, and most Nats fans, have way too much class to sink to their level.
Go Nats and please take the next two so that we can win this "Battle of the Beltways" series!!

Barry is lucky Manny switched the lineup, otherwise he'd get the blame for messing Guzman up with a glowing feature article.
My wife: "Guzman is 0 for 4?! Nice going, Barry! Put him on the cover of SI next time, whydontcha?"

If Patterson starts Friday for Potomac, it will actually be AT Frederick. The Carolina League takes its All-Star break after this weekend, and the P-Nats return home next Thursday for 6 days.
