Parkway Series finale

I don't really have anything for you, since I'm at my house with the Open on and not at the park, but here are some lineups:

Washington:
Guzman -- 6
Lopez -- 4
Zimmerman -- 5
Young -- DH
Kearns -- 9
Schneider -- 2
Belliard -- 3
Fick -- 7
Langerhans -- 8

Simontacchi -- 1

Baltimore:
Roberts -- 4
Mora -- 5
Markakis -- 9
Tejada -- 6
Huff -- DH
Payton -- 8
Gibbons -- 7
Millar -- 3
Bako -- 2

Guthrie -- 1

Random facts:

1. If Nationals win tonight, they have exact same record as Orioles.

2. Nationals, by virtue of first two wins against O's, have won four straight road series.

3. Over last two years, Nats lead O's in head-to-head series, 6-5.

4. Nationals trail Mets by 8.5 games. Yankees trail Red Sox by 8.0 games (before Sox game tonight).

5. Ryan Zimmerman: .246, 10 HR, 37 RBI. Last year through games of June 13: .267, 9 HR, 38 RBI.

6. Nationals' record: 28-37. Through 65 games last year: 30-35, but eventually fell to 30-39. Nats go 2-2 in next four, and they match last year's pace.

7. 1962 Mets after 65 games: 18-47. 2003 Tigers after 65 games: 17-48.

8. Nationals have 28 wins. Teams with 30 or fewer: Cubs, Cardinals, Pirates, Astros, Reds, Giants, Devil Rays, Orioles, White Sox, Royals, Rangers.

Enjoy the game tonight. I'll talk to you from north of the border tomorrow.

Why is Fick in this game? Is Bowden pulling the strings here or is Acta?

I would have rather started Logan and Langerhans....Fick must go sooner than later.....He is not going to bring anything in trade....DFA him please....

Thanks, Barry, for both the intriguing random facts and your work (again) on an "off" day.

Now Barry, don't let me start to think that the Nats being 8.5 out and the Yankees being 8 out correlates in any way...does it?? Ah, but to dream! Fick, he's ok, good clubhouse character, helps to keep the team loose, a practical joker. The off field chemistry is drastically underated by many. Funny how both teams at the top of the NL East (Mets/Braves) are struggling while everyb ody else is creeping up. Could be quite exciting around the break. GO NATS ... STAY HOT

Read the gamer from last night in today's .35 edition. After I finished, I thought, "I bet Svrluga didn't write this one."

I could tell the difference because it lacked your unifying theme and read more like a "How they scored" whereas your wrap-ups focus on a key point in the game and weave it throughout the story. I guess I've gotten spoiled.

Is this just a regular night off for Church, or is he in trouble for something? I wouldn't usually ask, but with him, it seems like he's always making someone mad.

Posted by: Ava | June 14, 2007 5:24 PM

As I alluded to in a now obsolete thread, according to another local newspaper's (way less cool) site, Fick's mother is not doing well at all and that is no doubt affecting him in many ways (though he wouldn't want to use it as an excuse as far as playing).

I know Barry didn't write the gamer since he knows how to read a box score.

From last night's gamer - "Nationals starter Matt Chico worked 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits. He walked one and did not strike out a soul."

Chico's final line from the box score - 6 2/3 innings, 8 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, 3 STRIKE OUTS!

Unless the writer was saying Bako, Roberts, and Mora have no souls, that's a pretty big error.

Indeed, natsfan1a. Getting out on the field will at worst (I hope) have a chance of getting Fick's mind off his worries.

Let's think good thoughts and root for Rob to mix it up some at the plate tonight. If he really does need to be benched, we'll know it soon enough.

I seem to recall that Fick's mother was ailing during Spring Training. It does suck having a family member that sick and for so long and I'm sure it's affecting Fick's on-field performance.

Still, why is he getting so much playing time? His swing is one of the worst I've ever seen. He always ends up unbalanced and seems to always be late on pitches.

I'm sure Fick is great in the clubhouse and keeps the team loose. Maybe we can make him a coach instead of a player? This way he can still keep the locker room loose and we won't have to endure another strikeout or popup from the #8 spot.

as JimBow says, "pitch, pitch, pitch, that's all you guys ever do."

Parkway Series! I love it! Nice ring to it.

Ava's interesting speculation on Church gets me thinking, hey, maybe Fick is writing a book this year, instead of Barry, so Manny is keeping him in games to stay on his good side.
Naaah.
Still, ...

Simontacchi giving us some heart-stopping, Cordero style innings...

Posted by: Jason | June 14, 2007 7:55 PM

Ejections bring no small amount of joy to my heart. The only way that could have been better would be if Perlozzo had maybe kicked a little dirt, gotten in the ump's face a little more. Ha.

Also, apparently Church hurt his thigh, via MLB.com. So. There's that.

Posted by: Ava | June 14, 2007 9:36 PM

Nats radio broadcasters said Church had a slight strain in his thigh, not a pull and is/was available to pinch hit. OK Chief, lets get this sweep and head for the border.

Nattily-battily
Nationals players have
Planted a sweep on the
Bawlmers tonight.

Citationistically,
Credit is due to the
Wood-knocking efforts of
NattyDelite!

Oh you Nats!

SWEEP!!! the best kind of curly W!

Posted by: gretchen | June 14, 2007 9:46 PM

Ryan Langerhans: "Seriously! Ribs in Toronto! That doesn't even make sense! Gar!"

And then he hit a double!

Way to sweep, boys. That'll do, Nats. That'll do.

Posted by: Ava | June 14, 2007 9:46 PM

Lets see...Nats payroll vs. Orioles payroll....same record...aint that a blast..way to go Chief..adios O's, thanks for the memories...see ya next year...at the Nats ballpark by the Anacostia.

Posted by: SC Nats Fan | June 14, 2007 9:47 PM

Sweet sweep indeed!

Posted by: natsfan1a | June 14, 2007 9:56 PM

Ah. Now that's the way to start a road trip. And I don't even have a broom to wave in the air.

Actually, I kinda wonder how the ribs are in Toronto. Maybe they douse in maple syrup, eh.

Posted by: FS Nats Watcher | June 14, 2007 10:19 PM

Not to worry -- you simply use your air broom (quite similar to an air guitar but a different motion)!

FS Nats Watcher muses: "Actually, I kinda wonder how the ribs are in Toronto. Maybe they douse in maple syrup, eh."

You could do a serious sauce on that basis. Little onion and garlic. Might try vinegar, but not for company...

Ah, the hell with it. They probably use jar sauce from the grocery store, same as I do on a lazy day.

Hmm.. just heard (not for the first time) an interesting, indeed, an urgent, suggestion for players to be recognized at Nats Park.

Iconic Nats pitcher Walter Johnson, the Big Train, deserves a lotta love.

So does catcher Josh Gibson of the Negro Leagues' Homestead Grays et al.

Imagine those two statues in bronze at the entrance of Nats Park. If that doesn't happen, we will have have seriously -- inexcusably -- dropped the ball.

Posted by: Hendo | June 14, 2007 10:47 PM

Man, those 2B pickoffs are music to my eyes. His 4th I believe. You're a rockstar Simontacchi.

Posted by: NatsNut | June 14, 2007 10:56 PM

Ditto on the statues of Johnson & Gibson, but they'll probably erect one of Screech...ugh

Posted by: SC Nats Fan | June 14, 2007 11:14 PM

How about Artie Johnson and Henry Gibson?
(Is that a chicken joke?)
Say goodnight, Dick.
