Here come the Diamondbacks
Coming up to an hour to go, and several places are starting to report that my earlier theory about Arizona being involved with the Cordero discussions. They're reporting Carlos Quentin, but I just heard a new theory: Carlos Gonzalez. He's a minor-league outfielder that is hitting .276 with 15 homers and 59 RBI for Class AA Mobile right now. He's 21 and an up-and-comer in a system loaded with prospects.
Here's the theory I was just told on this: Quentin could be hard to move because that would leave the Diamondbacks with the prospect of losing Eric Byrnes to free agency and putting everything on two young guys - Gonzalez and Justin Upton - for 2008, a year they wnt to compete. They need Quentin, still young as well, to stabilize that group.
But the discussions getting this far, as I believe they are, shows that the Diamondbacks are interested in bullpen help that they can control through 2008 and 2009 (Cordero's last two arbitration seasons). Gonzalez was ranked as the 18th best prospect in the game prior to the season by Baseball America. The Nationals have no one who can compete with such a status.
Another theory on the Mets' involvement: They won't give both Lastings Milledge AND Mike Pelfrey. But would the Nationals take Phil Humber with either one of those?
Also: WIth Yankees sending Scott Proctor to the Dodgers for Wilston Betemit, don't the Pinstripers need relief help in a big way? (This one I don't know anything about. I'm just sayin'.) Also: The Dodgers' apparent landing of Proctor might be the pitching help they need, meaning they would be out of any Cordero/Rauch talks.
Also: At 2:50 p.m., Chad Cordero walked into the ballpark and was checking his phone -- likely for trade updates or for text messages. Must be a weird feeling. I'll be interested him to talk to him after the deadline passes -- either way.
Sixty-three minutes to go.

Milledge and Humber Humber -- IMHO.
Posted by: swanni | July 31, 2007 2:59 PM
Even though I've never seen the guy play, if the Nats can get Gonzales for Chad, they should do it in a heartbeat. 21-year old OF already in AA, with pop and a big arm? If this is for real, do it, Jimbo. This is exactly what makes sense for Cordero: an everyday prospect who's maybe a year away. Put me down as a YES.

"Milledge and Humber Humber -- IMHO."
Not if "Humber Humber" likes prepubescent little girls!
Most exciting day for me is always election day (by the nature of my work).
Second most is the trade deadline.

What we need is real-time video of Barry tracking down all these leads...
The "Instant Gratification Generation" is here... today... right now... immediately.
Where do I click?

Rauch to the Mets for Mulvey and Carp...Cordero to the DBacks for Carlos Gonzalez and Petit.Just a thought.
Posted by: Andrew Stebbins | July 31, 2007 3:01 PM
Whoa - creepy. Posted just as this new thread was posted. For your benefit from the previous thread:
------
As someone who has been a huge Carlos Quentin fan since his College WS heroics at Stanford in 2003 -- torn rotator cuff, couldn't even hold up his throwing arm by itself, but still threw out guys from RF trying to run on him and hit dingers with only one arm -- I'm curious about the D'backs willingness to ship him now. SERIOUS character (positive) guy for a clubhouse, in my opinion, if he can turn it around. Sadly, looks like these days he is hoping to become an Austin Kearns player (who was held as a similar comparison back in 2003-4).
His numbers aren't great so far in a short career, and the org was REALLY high on him. I definitely think there's a lot of pressure on him in AZ, with the west coast media (not to mention the best pitching division in MLB, which explains a bunch of the low averages, runs scored, and dingers).
I wonder what he'd be like with a change of scenery, and would personally love to see him in DC at some point - not the answer at CF but for a 2nd tier reliever, it would be a steal.
For a 1st tier reliever though... not as sure. Thanks for the update Barry!

We could get Humber Humber and then Elijah Dukes.
Posted by: swanni | July 31, 2007 3:03 PM
I re-ask my question from earlier in the week: Would we still get to play "Hail to the Chief" in the bottom of the 9th?
Posted by: lowcountrynatsfan | July 31, 2007 3:04 PM
Mike Pelfrey is 0-7 with a 6.12 ERA, Im good on that, if we can get Milledge and Humber its a NO BRAINER, fleece them Bowden.
Posted by: Jason | July 31, 2007 3:04 PM
I agree .... if we can move Cordero and get the 18th rated prospect in baseball ... pull the trigger ...
Posted by: Heezy | July 31, 2007 3:06 PM
"I re-ask my question from earlier in the week: Would we still get to play 'Hail to the Chief' in the bottom of the 9th?"
No. That would be replaced by 15 minutes of "Clint's Greatest Hits" on the big board. Exits would be barred, and beer sales will have ended in the seventh inning. Does this at all change your opinion of any proposed Cordero trade?
Posted by: Section 419 | July 31, 2007 3:08 PM
I don't see the Mets giving up Milledge in this scenario. Carlos Gomez neither. And I don't think Pelfrey or Humber alone would be worth it for us. Their stars have really fallen. Gonzalez and a pitching prospect (Brett Anderson? Matt Torra?) would be a nice bounty for us.
Posted by: Jamie | July 31, 2007 3:08 PM
... interesting you should mention the Yanks. My co-worker, a dyed-in-the-wool Yankees fan, just came to my cell (oops, I meant 'cubicle') and asked me if Cordero was gone yet. He thinks a deal between W,DC and NY would be a natural fit. He offered Johnny Damon; I told him to give JimBow a call right away.
Posted by: natscan reduxit | July 31, 2007 3:09 PM
Would we let Johnny Damon grow his hair back, or make him shave his head, like Manny?
I would want to know this before we traded for him.
Posted by: Wigi | July 31, 2007 3:11 PM
Hail to the Chief and Cordero will be replaced by Rauch and "Big Time" by Peter Gabriel
Posted by: swanni | July 31, 2007 3:11 PM
Rauch may be gone too. Saul "Mariano" Rivera anyone? ;-)
Posted by: Jamie | July 31, 2007 3:14 PM
... BTW, there is a game tonight isn't there? Anyone know who's pitching in place of Lohse?
Posted by: natscan reduxit | July 31, 2007 3:15 PM
Damon needs to grow his hair back in order to regain his strength. Thus, a bald Johnny is off the table.
Re. Rauch closing, I'd prefer Jimmy Dean's (I think it was) "Big, Bad John" as walk-on music.
Posted by: natsfan1a | July 31, 2007 3:15 PM
Barry, I think it would be really weird for the Chief if he doesn't get traded and then has to come in and save tonight's game, for the team that was trying to trade him. Welcome to the bigs, Chief.
Posted by: GEVA | July 31, 2007 3:17 PM
I like "Big Time" better... but what do I know?
Posted by: Wigi | July 31, 2007 3:18 PM
Big Bad John would be perfect!!
Posted by: Bill | July 31, 2007 3:18 PM
Okay...Old Man Rivera! Perfect song.
Posted by: swanni | July 31, 2007 3:18 PM
Why didn't you tell them we are both drunk. That would explain that ridiculous proposal?
Posted by: natscan reduxit's co-worker | July 31, 2007 3:19 PM
Posted this in the wrong thread, as they are coming in fast and furious (I'm so confused, but then I'm not very bright) :)
Natscan, that would be LHP Bobby Livingston, 2-1, 3.72 (in 5 starts), per the Nats site.
Posted by: natsfan1a | July 31, 2007 3:20 PM
Good one swanni.
Posted by: Jamie | July 31, 2007 3:21 PM
I could get used to "old man Rivera" - Manny Rivera that is.

I think in most other lines of work, I would agree... but there's no way you can take it personally if they're trying to trade you, unless you play for the Yankees...

Posted by: Wigi | July 31, 2007 3:21 PM
I would prefer that Rivera be a setup man. We would then have an excuse to play "Mambo No. 8" at Nats Park.
Posted by: Hendo | July 31, 2007 3:21 PM
Peter Gammons just echoed that Humber is not enough for Chad.
Posted by: swanni | July 31, 2007 3:22 PM
From Peter Gabriel to Peter Gammons in just over a dozen posts. Only on Nationals Journal.
Posted by: John in Mpls | July 31, 2007 3:24 PM
Also, while Carlos Gonzalez definitely has some upside, he's disappointed a bit this year in AA (solid but unspectacular numbers). Still, he remains a top 30-40 prospect. It'd be nice to get another lesser prospect thrown in for Cordero.
Posted by: Jamie | July 31, 2007 3:27 PM
"From Peter Gabriel to Peter Gammons in just over a dozen posts. Only on Nationals Journal."
I have a joke there but instead will obey Hendo's "Wigi Rule."

32 minutes to deadline. Waiting for Cordero to be traded is almost as nervewracking as watching Cordero try to close the ninth.

How about we give Cordero to the Mets for Milledge and Rauch to the Diamondback for Carlos Gonzalez.
30 minutes till the "Bowden dissapoints again" posts. (and I mean this as a Bowden fan, I think most of the fans on NJ would rather he make a BAD trade so we have something to talk about...)

Milledge is not worth Cordero
Rauch is not worth Gonzalez
They are PROVEN big league pieces. The Nats deserve a 2 for 1 for these two guys.I don't want a trade for the sake of it.
Posted by: #4 | July 31, 2007 3:37 PM
As long as Bowden doesn't give him away, I'm perfectly fine with keeping Chad. But if he can find some value.....

Not so here estuartj - I'm very reluctant to trade pitching -especially proven pitching. But we need to be at the table right now.
Posted by: lowcountrynatsfan | July 31, 2007 3:39 PM
I'd take Milledge for Chad in a second. But getting Gonzo for Rauch is unrealistic.

#4,
That was my point, it seems a large number of my fellow posters here at NJ are more interested in movement for movement's sake rather than inproving the organization.
Sometimes it feels like we're at a neighbor's yard sale telling them what they should be selling and what you'd give for it...

Sorry, estuartj. I missed the sarcasm.
Posted by: #4 | July 31, 2007 3:43 PM
I hope Chief is right about Chief. One thing about the Nats is that they have a lot of intangibles surrounding their players that does not translate to value to other teams. Cordero is more valuable to the Nats than to any other team, because of his history here. On the other hand, players like Vidro and Guillen became less valuable, and now they're gone.
Anyway, I wouldn't fault Bowden for keeping the price too high on Cordero or Rauch... both are replacable, but you better get something in return for them.
(I read that Livan was available, by the way).
Posted by: Wigi | July 31, 2007 3:45 PM
Changing subjects slightly, I see the Astros traded Ensburg to the Pads for a mere pittance. I think the Nats would've been a decent fit, even though he's primarily a 3B. Wonder if Bowden had any interest at all.
Posted by: Jamie | July 31, 2007 3:45 PM
The Old Nats (Rangers) have had a good 24 hours.
John in MPLS - don't go to Burger King unless we're going to get a Whopper in return

Out of curiousity... does the trade have to be completed by 4? I mean.. if there are physicals, etc. involved... that implies that there is an ability to renege if you don't like what you find...
Posted by: Wigi | July 31, 2007 3:51 PM
As we wait, allow me to read to you from the Nationals season preview pullout from the Post (the one where Bernie Castro does his best Kory Casto impression):
"The larger question: Will Cordero be in Washington come season's end? If a contending team meets the asking price - a package that must include one top-flight young starting pitcher - the answer could be no."
Did someone say Wil Cordero?

From ESPN:
"The three-way deal that would have sent Chad Cordero to the Mets, by way of Arizona, is dead. The teams couldn't agree on players, and the Mets weren't willing to add a second player to the deal. It's still believed that the one player the teams had agreed upon was pitcher Philip Humber, but Washington wasn't willing to trade Cordero for Humber, one for one."

I guess it doesn't matter now, but I have to fight back for those of us who were hoping some of the rumored trades would take place. The Nats need talent, young talent, especially hitters since they've got pitching in the pipeline. They've got relievers, who are overrated in general (look at how many relievers have pitched well here since the team came to town). You definitely try to use them in a trade. As for, "Gonzalez is not worth Rauch," do you think Rauch would be the 18th best prospect if he were in the minors right now? I love Cordero, but I think that would have been a fair trade, Chief for the prospect. Guess we'll never know.
