So much for that theory

Well, hope you chewed on that Colome-to-Arizona-for-Chris Carter-to-send-to-Boston deal. Because it's not happening.

I've been told that the PTBN (Penguin To Be Nippy? Phillie To Be (a) National?) in the Pena deal is not on the major league roster right now, and it most certainly is not Colome. This from sources with knowledge of the deal. I have confirmed that Carter will go to Boston eventually, which, as I mentioned, was first reported in The Boston Globe over the weekend.

Where does that leave the Diamondbacks? I would look at Columbus's roster, and I would look at Winston Abreu to start. He got shelled a couple times in the majors (6.38 ERA in 19 appearances), but his minor league numbers are nasty, a 1.36 ERA in 32 appearances, with 76 strikeouts and 19 walks in 46-1/3 innings. Yikes.

If the D'Backs are interested in a lefty, Arnie Munoz -- who has been considered to be called up Sept. 1 here -- is 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA for Columbus. Chris Booker? A possibility, I suppose, too.

Arizona is in fact looking for bullpen help. But it doesn't appear it'll be from the Nationals' major league bullpen.

Your lineups:

Washington:
Lopez -- 6
Belliard -- 4
Zimmerman -- 5
Young -- 3
Kearns -- 9
Church -- 8
Pena -- 7
Schneider -- 2
Redding -- 1 (former Astro goes against Astros)

Houston:
Biggio -- 4
Loretta -- 6
Berkman -- 3
Lee -- 7
Scott -- 9
Wiggington -- 5
Lane -- 8
Munson -- 2
Jennings -- 1 (free agent to be)

One other thing: Ryan Wagner (remember him) was in the clubouse. He lives not far from Houston and checked in. Said his surgically repaired right shoulder feels much, much better -- he can lift weights and stuff like that -- but he won't throw for two more months.

Enjoy the game.

Also - so much for Kearns in center, right, or was it just outta habit Barry?

Posted by: Andrew Stebbins | August 20, 2007 07:14 PM

So, is it just me or does Chris Carter sounds like a Real Deal prospect, and the Snakes are ok giving him up for a AAA pitcher when they're in the hunt for a division?

I'm glad we're not going to get rid of Colome, but somehow this doesn't make sense to me. Even though AZ has a logjam, IF Carter is a real deal, at least get someone who's gonna contribute right?

Posted by: ShawNatsFan | August 20, 2007 07:17 PM

I'm curious about the OF situation too. Maybe at cavernous RFK you play Peña in RF and at popcorn box parks you play him in left?

Hey Church, here's hoping there's no need to get on that hill! I'm hoping Redding feels a bit of revenge factor to kick it to his old team!

Posted by: ShawNatsFan | August 20, 2007 07:23 PM

Ok, final post before the game starts, promise!

I'm going to make a concerted effort to post early with a Peña reference so we all can copy and paste with the tilde instead of without.

I hate to say I told you so...4o I won't. I kind of hope the ptbnl isn't Munoz, who looks interesting, though he is only 5'9" tall so how much MLB potential he has...

Here is a thought though on tea leaf reading...if it was anyone on the minor league roster, why didn't they just go ahead and make the move?

Two possibilities, 1. The player is on the DL, which probably means it's Micah Bowie or 2. ARI doesn't want to demote anyone from their current bullpen to make room for a new addition.

#2 sounds more likely but I do find it strange that they would trade a promising 1B guy fopr someone that isn't even good enough to beat out an existing reliever

I wonder if anyone tipped Barry off to what the timeframe is for the player to be named?

Barry, someone posted on another board that MASN will soon start broadcasting in HD. Can you find out if it's true?

Posted by: Nats Fan | August 20, 2007 07:54 PM

good question, ej...

Posted by: Cevansjr | August 20, 2007 07:56 PM

Why ya'll wanna doubt?

Posted by: Wily Mo | August 20, 2007 08:28 PM

Hmmm...OK, two games, two ding-dongs for WMP. I'm cautiously interested...

Posted by: DE | August 20, 2007 08:30 PM

...they are playing in the juice box, after all.

Posted by: DE | August 20, 2007 08:32 PM

Go Go Willy Mo!

Posted by: %62 intheUK | August 20, 2007 08:33 PM

Wow, a new record.
90 minutes during a game with no posts.

WMP with a shot, Da Meat hits a homer down the line with what doesn't even make the warning track most places.

Jennings looks like he HATES this park. I'm curious how he pitches elsewhere, because a couple plays and it's 1-0 Nats.

Way to jump on 'em boys! And, WMP, that shot would've been out anywhere. I'm loving having the threat, and I'm warming up to you very quickly!

Posted by: ShawNatsFan | August 20, 2007 09:01 PM

Welcome back, Blog-Father. You were greatly missed. How's the heat in Houston compared to DC?

How's the tee-shirt ideas coming along?

6-0 Nats. Wa-woo! On our way for Manny becoming manager of the century.

Posted by: Viva Livan | August 20, 2007 09:13 PM

I think Manny's great, but I'm wondering if he'll be more inclined to argue calls. Even my Mets loving colleague said the thought the umpiring was against the Nats over the weekend.

Posted by: Sect 422 | August 20, 2007 11:01 PM

Is it just me, or are Charlie and Dave getting really 'relaxed' in the late innings? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Posted by: cevans | August 20, 2007 11:17 PM

And if Church gets 13 more doubles in the next 37 games, I will have to take back at least some of what I said about him.

Posted by: cevans | August 20, 2007 11:23 PM

Woot! shutout by Redding and Colome!

Posted by: SF Fan | August 20, 2007 11:26 PM

And Willy Mo is hitting this deep in the order becaaaaauuse...?!?

OK, I know, I know, it's only three games since he started, but hitting a tater OFF THE OUTFIELD WALL is, uhh, pretty cool.

I watch the Nats feast on Jennings' flesh, and I can't keep this thought outta my head:

"WHY COULDN'T THE REST OF THE NL EAST PLAY LIKE THIS?!?!?"

Which leads to a second thought of a revolving batting order consisting of Z-man, Willy Mo and Da Meat Hook, with their actual order depending on how Manny feels when he wakes up in the morning. Or drawing their names out of a hat. Or just doing the Eeeny-Meenie-Miney-Mo thing.

Posted by: Juan-John | August 20, 2007 11:39 PM

That'll do, Nats. That'll do.

Though, really. It never rains offense but it pours. Not that I'm complaining.

Posted by: Atlanta | August 20, 2007 11:49 PM

3 for 4, with 2 RBI and a Home Run AND an intentional walk...

Why don't you hang around a couple more games Willy Mo? If it is just a honeymoon, we'll still take it!

Posted by: Section 506 (After moving) | August 20, 2007 11:56 PM

I hope we get some more Willy Mo believers in here, that blast he hit was a complete monster. He has Hulk-like strength and hasn't looked overmatched in an at bat yet. There could be some serious upside to this kid. Definitely hoping for the best, and Bowden is making himself look good again.

Redding is making a case for being Big Nasty's replacement as the veteran on the staff.

OK, so I stood IN FRONT of my TV during ESPN's late edition of Baseball Tonight just to see Willy Mo "Touch 'em All."

Zip. Zilch. Zifft. Nada.

Uhhhh, did they show it during a different broadcast of BT?!?

Posted by: Juan-John | August 21, 2007 01:10 AM

Uh, yeah, JJ, that'd be in the Alternate Universe broadcast, where the Nats are battling for a wildcard and the MSM show them some respect.
You need that special Dr. Who cable box to get that one.

Not true, Cevansjr, I've had the Dr. Who cable box to the Alternate Universe broadcast for some time now and quite enjoy it. I saw Tom Baker and Chris Berman both say the Nats would be the worst team in history earlier this year on it.
