One in the books
Keep in mind that this is an 11:30 a.m. start, so we're already under way, with the first meal from the Manatee Room sitting uneasily in my stomach.
Top of the first: Bergmann got the Hoyas in order on a pop-up to the catcher, a strikeout looking and a strikeout swinging. The scoreboard here at HSCS is new and high-tech, and they're having a heckuva time getting things right. (At one point, the count was two balls, six strikes. Bergmann, as we know, is really tough on hitters in six-strike counts.)
Bottom of the first: Roger Bernadina led off against Hoyas lefty Michael Gaggioli with a double to left-center (that was really a single if it was against major leaguers). Ronnie Belliard then grounded to third, and Hoyas third baseman Sean Lamont airmailed the throw into the stands. Bernadina scored on the error, with Belliard taking second.
Zimmerman followed with an opposite-field single to right, putting runners on the corners. Dmitri Young skied a ball behind second base, and the Hoyas had a bit of a communication problem, and the ball fell in for an "RBI single." Nats up 2-0.
Austin Kearns then lofted a fly ball to center, and Zimmerman tagged to move to third. One out, runners at the corners for Garrett Guzman. It would appear that there's almost no place for the two Rule 5 picks on this team, but Guzman did his job and flew out to left, driving home Zimmerman to make it 3-0.
Two down for Jesus Flores, with Dmitri Young on first. Flores dropped a double down the left-field line, and Young looked pretty darn slow rounding second heading to third. Whitney, the other Rule 5 pick, comes to the plate. He grounds a double down the third-base line. That'd be two more runs, making it 5-0. Finally, poor Gagglioli gets Ian Desmond to fly out to right to end the inning.
Nats 5, Hoyas 0 after one inning.

They might call this thing after 5 - according to their website, Georgetown has a full slate of games (that actually matter) down there this next week and I'm sure they don't want to use up every arm they've got today.

Very true Tank, but as a coach (who's job depends on these arms) there is no way they're wasted on this when they have NCAA games coming up. Yea, the kids want to go but there is no way it's happening.
If Georgetown only squeeks out a couple wins in Florida over the next week and the G-Town A.D. calls in their Head Coach - he isn't going to be too happy to be told, yea we sucked down there but at least we put up a good showing against the Nats rookie ball team.
Granted, they're probably all on a strict pitch count or one-inning which will just serve in place of a bullpen they were scheduled to throw in practice today anyways.
