Your Opening Night Grapefruit League lineup

Without further ado:

Cristian Guzman -- SS
Felipe Lopez -- 2B
Lastings Milledge -- CF
Nick Johnson -- 1B
Wily Mo Pena -- LF
Alex Escobar -- DH
Elijah Dukes -- RF
Kory Casto -- 3B
Chad Moeller -- C

Matt Chico -- P

As we said before, Garrett Mock will follow Chico. The Nationals bus has arrived here in Jupiter, adn the team is on the field getting ready to stretch. And I hate to whine (actually, I love it), but it's cold here. Should be about 40 degrees in the early part of the game.

Jim Bowden, Bob Boone, Squire Galbreath and Brian Parker from the Nats front office, along with James Williams -- Elijah Dukes's mentor -- are all here for the festivities even though it's nearly two hours down I-95.

And before I head back down to the field, a huge congratulations to my man Dave Sheinin, who took two top-10 finishes in the Associated Press Sports Editors annual writing contest. Sheinin placed in the top 10 in features for his memorable profile of then-Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton last January or February, and also landed in the top 10 for game stories for his Game 4 of the World Series tome. The placing will be announced later.

oh my gosh my heart just fluttered when this entry popped up. :)

Does anyone know how I can either watch or listen to this live?? I need some baseball in my life asap!

Posted by: Wily Mo Pablo | February 27, 2008 4:54 PM

... and now that I've calmed down a bit and actually read beyond the word "lineup", congrats to Dave on the well-deserved nod!

Can I also say I got additional flutters from seeing both Nick Johnson AND Alex Escobar in the lineup!

Posted by: JennX | February 27, 2008 4:54 PM

First of all, congrats Dave. Man, you're on a roll: first keeping the NJ crowd satisfied and now bringing home some jewelry for the mantle....solid work brother.

Second, I wish my name was Squire Galbreath --- that's straight out of Monty Python.

Third, I know it's game 1 of the spring, some of the regulars aren't there, and well it's game 1 of the spring BUT holy crap! if we could do a side-by-side of this lineup vs last year's Grapefruit League game 1.

I echo the NJ and Escobar on the field at the same time mentioned before --- the trainer is probably gearing up for a wild night. *knock knock*

OMG ... a lineup!!! I'm so happy.

Dave -- congrats on the placement!

Posted by: e | February 27, 2008 5:08 PM

I know this isn't directly related, but did you see ex-Nat, Majewski's line today in the Reds/Phils game?

.1 IP
6 H
6 R
6 ER
ERA 162.00

Nice.

Posted by: Diz | February 27, 2008 5:09 PM

Also, adding on to Wily Mo Pablo....Barry, could you set up a webcam or something pointed towards the field? I know it'll roughly have the same picture quality of a J.V. girls basketball game, but c'mon man we're feening up here.

Posted by: Corey | February 27, 2008 5:10 PM

I'm definitely feening over here!! C'mon Barry help a brother out!

Posted by: Wily Mo Pablo | February 27, 2008 5:12 PM

Wow two hours down I-95 What time did Bowden leave HCSC on his Segway to get there so early..

Go NATS!!

I consider myself a discerning reader.

Dave Sheinin Rocks!

Corey: if you zoom in on this pic, you can see last year's opening day line-up (actually Alex Escobar started then too...).

MLB Gameday Audio shows the game available on Florida's home station WQAM so for 14.95 you get audio for the season.

i nominate the name squire galbreath to the names that time forgot: medieval edition.

Posted by: theraph | February 27, 2008 5:24 PM

Congratulations, Dave!

Hopefully recogntion like this will lead your editors to start appreciating the value of good baseball writing and you will write articles on a more regular basis this coming season, including some supplementary Nats coverage (i.e. not game stories).

grats to dave...

and...

PLAY BALL!

Posted by: 231 | February 27, 2008 5:33 PM

I listened to much of the Reds game on Gameday Audio. Sounds like Majewski had some control problems. I was a little distracted, but I think I heard two wild pitches in there.

The Detroit announcers mentioned the Floridians in attendance were wearing stocking caps and cuddling up. They found that amusing. It's 23 here right now with a wind chill of 13. 40 sounds downright balmy.

Dave's story on Hamilton was amazing. Congrats, Boom-Boom.

Makes my day to see a line up.

I supposed we're not allowed to worry that most of the projected opening day starters are in there but not Zimmerman, right? He's not back in Vierra with his wrist in a bucket of ice or anything.

Thanks, JennX, for the ST 07 Opening Day lineup/picture.

For everyone else's benefit, although the picture is lovely for sure (thumb's up!), the first lineup of spring training 2007 was:

Felipe Lopez - 2b
D'Angelo Jimenez - SS
Ryan Zimmerman - 3b
Austin Kearns - rf
Ryan Church - lf
Alex Escobar - thumb's up/dh
Brian Schneider - c
Larry Broadway - 1b
Nook Logan - cf

Shawn Hill - p

You'd think they'd start paying me by now, but I wholeheartedly recommend Gameday Audio for those who want to hear the ST games. It's $14.95 for the entire season. You get one feed for every ST game, and both home and away feeds for every regular season game. Like I said above, I listened to both the NYM/DET and the PHI/CIN games at work this afternoon.

For the same exact price, you can become a Twins Territory Member. In addition to coming with a Gameday Audio subscription, you get a membership card, a 15% discount on Twins merchandise (if you're ever at the Metrodome this year), and you're entered into a drawing for an autographed ball for every home game (you need not be present to win). If you sign up today, your Gameday Audio access is immediate.

I honestly hope the Nats plan on doing something like that soon.

Just thought it was worth another mention for those who wanted to hear tonight's game. It's my last plug. Honest.

Posted by: John in Mpls | February 27, 2008 5:48 PM

I had heard elsewhere that the Florida radio feed of tonight's game being presented via MLB Gameday Audio was strictly a Spanish-language broadcast.

Reposting this (and if indeed this is possible, JennX is right that some good ideas/slogans were posted earlier; I'll dig those up if we get the green light):

We need to get Planet NJ shirts, or buttons, or something printed up so that we can recognize each other at the games.

BARRY, can we do this? I earlier suggested that perhaps these items could be sold at a reasonable markup with the proceeds going to ImpActa. But I assume we'd need the Post and possibly the Nats, as well as Manny, to sign off.

If you think this can be done and could point to the right people, I'd be happy to make a few calls and see if we could get something organized. But someone other than me would have to design the thing.

I just took a peek at MLB.com and looked at the box score the Reds game from earlier today. This was, former Nat, Gary Majewski's line: 0.1 6 6 6 0 0 0 162.00. Ooch! I know it is spring training but that trade looks more and more loopsided everytime Tex takes the mound now.

Posted by: Nats Fan in KC | February 27, 2008 5:52 PM

... first of all, big hearty back slaps to Sheinen. There's not a better way to serve (all of) society than to write.

... second, from the Blue Ox, I'd say there's an in-fence scoreboard of some kind being installed this afternoon. Can anybody confirm that's what it is?

... finally, We Have A Ball Game!!!!!

Go Wily Mo Pena! Go Nats!!

Posted by: natscan reduxit | February 27, 2008 6:09 PM

Natscan -- I believe that is to be the out-of-town scoreboard (or the world's largest keno board).

Am I the only one hoping that Escobar hits the snot out of the ball this Spring while staying healthy? I woudl LOVE to see this guy do well enough where we may be able to get some use out of him sometime down the road (via a late-season call up or trade).

If Karma exists:

Opening day roster has Escobar on; Dukes off

Posted by: swanni | February 27, 2008 6:22 PM

It's Baaaarry Whiiiiner. :)

Congrats, Dave. I remember the Hamilton story. Now if we could just get Barry on the national radar so that some of his stories would be recognized as well.

Pardon my ignorance, but "feening"?

Bob L., we know each other by the secret handshake. Oh wait, we forgot to make one up.

Go, Escobar!!! Woooooo!!!!

Posted by: natsfan1a | February 27, 2008 6:29 PM

Is the game on radio? Please tell me i have to see my nats!

Posted by: DJ 26 | February 27, 2008 6:46 PM

It's playing on MLB Audio, but only in Spanish...

Posted by: ...no hablo español | February 27, 2008 6:47 PM

It's in spanish though.
