Blue Heaven -- and a chat!
First things first, and I should have mentioned this yesterday, but I have a chat at 1 p.m. this afternoon -- right when the game is starting. Please join me.
The clubhouse is still buzzing about Joel Hanrahan's performance last night at Disney, blowing away the Braves over three innings. The easy guess: He makes this team because he's out of options, and as Manny Acta said, "We want to stockpile arms."
The main story in the $.35/$.50-edition dealt with the question of the Opening Day pitcher. My guess is that, even if they don't announce it, we'll know who it is by the weekend just by figuring out how they break up Chico, Bergmann and Perez and getting a further idea from John Patterson about whether he'd go on short rest once over the remainder of the spring. As Patterson said last night, "Right now, I'm pitching Monday in Philadelphia."
In Vero Beach today, and this is the beginning of the Dodgers' last weekend (if you can call Wednesday a weekend) training here -- ever. Just talked to Tommy Lasorda about it all. If you haven't been down here, it's too bad. It genuinely is different, and I'll try to get that kind of feel into the paper. "It has an aura," Acta said.
Other notes: The club expects Ryan Zimmerman to be fine, though Acta said he might give him tomorrow off as well (he's not on the trip today, as scheduled). Jesus Colome, who hasn't pitched in a Grapefruit League game this spring after being delayed with visa problems, should do so shortly, Acta said.
Oh, and Jeff Weaver: I included the L.A. Times's news that Jered Weaver said the Nats are interested. The price, from what I'm told, is going to have to be right (read: low). But I'll do some more work on this today. Asked if he needed more arms to bring into the season, Acta said, "I'm fine with the guys I have here."
Here's the lineups:
Washington:
Cristian Guzman -- 6
Ronnie Belliard -- 4
Lastings Milledge -- 8
Austin Kearns -- 9
Alex Escobar -- LF
Aaron Boone -- DH
Matt Whitney -- 3
Humberto Cota -- 2
Willie Harris -- 5
Mike O'Connor -- 1
Los Angeles:
Juan Pierre -- 7
Rafael Furcal -- 6
James Loney -- 3
Andre Ethier -- 9
Jason Repko -- 8
Blake DeWitt -- 5
Gary Bennett -- 2
Ivan DeJesus -- 4
Chad Billingsley -- 1
(Uh, I can't imagine the Dodgers are allowing the Nats to use a DH but not using one themselves, but who knows.)
Talk to you at 1 p.m.

That's very sad that this is the last weekend at Dodgertown. I was there the day the announcement was made that Lasorda was voted into the Hall of Fame. Great memories. Is nothing sacred in baseball any more?

Yea, I was wondering if the chat is at 1:00 our time or 1:00 WashPost time?
;)

Ack! It happened again. NOW it shows my real time posted, but AFTER 231's. I'm going home now. I'm WAY too worried about this.
Posted by: NatsNut | March 12, 2008 11:54 AM
Barry -- is McGeary still coming into camp on the Stanford spring break? Or is he coming into minor league camp?
Posted by: nats fan in annandale | March 12, 2008 12:30 PM
how do you like me now? possibly worst song ever.
Posted by: longterm | March 12, 2008 12:31 PM
Lasorda is old school, man. He don't need no stinkin' DH!
Posted by: Section 419+1 | March 12, 2008 12:36 PM
OK, if not Patterson for opening day, then who? It sure isn't going to be Hill ... I'll wager any amount he starts on the DL.
So that leaves Bergman? Perez? Lannan? Chico? Screech?
Posted by: FearlessFreep | March 12, 2008 12:39 PM
Is Weaver really the best option at this point?
If Patterson can't go, I would hope that Bergmann would get the nod.
He has been the face of the organization this off-season,at nearly all of the community events, not to mention he deserves the opportunity more than the rest of the group previously mentioned.
Posted by: FFNatsfan11 | March 12, 2008 12:49 PM
well... it looks like *barry's* timestamp is right. unless he knew annandale was gonna ask that...
Posted by: 231 | March 12, 2008 12:50 PM
Oh, that's interesting logic: the more autographs you sign and the more community events you go to, earns you the right to pitch on Opening Day. Astounding logic. I guess we will be seeing Billy Crystal pitch for the Yanks on opening day since he has been a part of more service projects than any of those guys.
If he remains healthy and keeps improving, I am going to say Patterson gets the Opening Day nod. A Patterson that is "on" can outpitch Bergmann anyday.
Posted by: NatsNQ | March 12, 2008 12:55 PM
I second the support for Bergmann to start the season. That way, JP has nothing to worry about in terms of scheduling changes, and Bergmann gets rewarded for the best spring training among the starters, as well as his under-rated contributions from last season.

I want to see the poll on what song NOT to play in the ballpark. And the only available choice in that poll had better be Sweet Caroline.

wow. you're right, theraph, that's pretty weak. while i like a few of the songs (beautiful day, song 2, shout), i don't think any of them are all that great for baseball. esp the 7th inning stretch (and shout or build me up buttercup? BUILD ME UP BUTTERCUP?!?!).
and, imo, the only thing that should be standard is the 7th inning stretch song. otherwise, use a little creativity, eh? of course, i should know better, based on that list.
Posted by: 231 | March 12, 2008 1:04 PM
theraph, what you have against Tin Yurls?
Posted by: NatsNut | March 12, 2008 1:05 PM
btw, four tries to get my last post through. first three gave me errors due to no name (it was there) or content violations. what's going on with your system here, wapost?
Posted by: 231 | March 12, 2008 1:07 PM
I don't take the release to mean that it's listing ALL of the songs ... that there are others. Although from the selection they have posted, it wouldn't leave one with much confidence that the others will be any better.
Posted by: FearlessFreep | March 12, 2008 1:19 PM
Mike O'Connor??? why's he still in ML camp?

Clock problems abound. I predict I will post this exact same message in ONE HOUR!
Posted by: I see into the future | March 12, 2008 1:33 PM
they didn't give the impression that there would be more songs. at least i didn't read that into it. but i guess it could be interpreted differently. i'm not holding out hope, tho.

There is just no way that I see the opener going to anyone but patterson, barring an injury before then.
Posted by: .390 | March 12, 2008 1:36 PM
nothing really. i just like to see where im going when i click on a link. i guess personal bias is a little too strong. maybe i should have said:
im too lazy to make an aesthetically pleasing visual for those rare individuals that are actually reading my intermittent posts. i am not opposed to the use of such devices, however i refrain in the creation of.
plus, not to mention i was always reading that as "tin yurl" instead of "tiny url" for about 6 months and wondering what a tin yurl was.
Posted by: theraph | March 12, 2008 1:36 PM
I'd like Journey-Don't Stop Believin, but that belongs to the White Sox I suppose.
My vote- Living on a Prayer-Bon Jovi if that doesn't already belong to someone.
Have to do some research, but that one comes to mind first.
Somewhere in game you have to have Glory Days by the Boss.
Put me in Coach- John Fogherty
Maybe some home town flavor-
Dave Matthews Band
I could go on all afternoon, but hope the list to choose from is decent, like theraph said, hope there is a write in column
Posted by: FFNatsfan11 | March 12, 2008 1:36 PM
Is there any other GM in baseball as vocal & opinionated as Bowden?? He's made some border-line dangerous trades/moves, and I hope they work out OK, but he refuses to pick up a solid starting pitcher or two, which is what this team sorely needs.
He knows that pitching wins, that's why he's stockpiling young arms, but this team has NOTHING for starters now. They might as well carry 12 relievers...they'll need 'em!
Posted by: scmonty | March 12, 2008 1:37 PM
curious, scmonty... which "solid" starting pitcher has he "refused" to pick up? emphasis on the word "solid."

Barry, I'm very impressed with how you're able to find fresh and entertaining ways of telling the Nationals's story, even when you're having to repeat the same stories several times over (here, chats, $.35/$.50 edition).
I've been practically breathing down your neck for over a year and it just doesn't get old. There's always some new little nugget that any old writer would just regurgitate, but that you MAKE seem interesting and fun. Another high bar for the new guy to reach.
Posted by: NatsNut | March 12, 2008 2:39 PM
What the heck, I'll go: the Nats will win 6-2. :)

Well evidently Dmitri agrees with #4's post from yesterday (this is from cbssportsline):
"I know some of these guys through my brother," Dmitri says, referring to brother Delmon -- now playing for Minnesota after spending 2007 as Dukes' teammate in Tampa Bay. "He tells me straight up, 'With Milledge and Dukes, you've got nothing to worry about.'
"You've got to look at the situations. There were no veteran black players with the Mets (Milledge) or Devil Rays (Dukes) to show these guys how to be big league players on and off the field."
Posted by: Bob L. (hour a)Head | March 12, 2008 2:54 PM
Barry when you write tomorrow about coming to Florida to catch the Nats, can you please explain how we go about seeing the minor league guys play in their games. Thanks.

Geez have a little faith Mom. Looks good for AAA depth though.
Posted by: Bazz | March 12, 2008 3:38 PM
I believe that it was a tear in the time-space continuum. But I *think* it might be fixed? No wait - mine was right but Bruce is a half-hour ahead of me.

Uh, now I'm an hour ahead. Never mind.
Posted by: natsfan1a | March 12, 2008 3:45 PM
ok, I'm confused. Just looked at mlb.com's scoeboard and it says the Nats scored one on the 4th and the Dodgers scored two in the first and one in the 4th. But, they have the score Nats 3, Dodgers 2. Now, I only went to Arlington County Public Schools, but I believe that this is wrong.
Also, it shows that O'Connor has pitched 4 innings, allowed ZERO hits, but has given up 2 runs (1 earned). I guess the three walks and one passed ball helped.

Posted by: natsfan1a | March 12, 2008 3:49 PM
Answer to the 6-2 conundrum: Kearns hit a 3-run HR in the top of the 5th.
As for why the box score shows a run in the bottom of the 4th for LA, I haven't the foggiest.
Posted by: faNATic | March 12, 2008 3:53 PM
I predict AK is going to hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 5th.
Posted by: Bob L. (hour a)Head | March 12, 2008 3:56 PM
natsfan1a: 2 things.
1) Since you're an hour ahead, tell everyone there's a new post.
2) where do you keep finding the gameday link. I've been relying on your posts to get it but can't get it on my own.
Posted by: NatsNut | March 12, 2008 3:57 PM

the song HAS to be "Curly (W) Shuffle"
Yeah, I know it's been done; means some folks will know the words, is all.
But there's a local angle, there's (several) videos, there's even a dance, sorta. It's got call-and-response, it's upbeat, and it's going to get some one-hit wonder a few bucks in residuals, which beats giving it to Neil Diamond, who shouldn't need it.
