L-Millz, J-Roll, and we've got a game

A while ago, Lastings Milledge hit his first homer as a National, a two-run shot that put the Nationals up 6-2.

Now, the Phillies have battled all the way back. They chased Matt Chico on Chase Utley's solo homer in the sixth. Joel Hanrahan came on and impressively struck out Pat Burrell and Pedro Feliz to get out of that inning, but he walked Jayson Werth to lead off the seventh, then departed after giving up an RBI double to Carlos Ruiz.

Enter lefty Ray King. Does his job in striking out the left-handed Geoff Jenkins, but then faces Jimmy Rollins, a switch-hitter batting right-handed. Rollins tied this baby up by driving King's 1-1 pitch out to left-center. It's 6-6 going to the eighth.

I'm a bit gassed after the weekend's festivities, and might be remiss in posting the rest of the day. However, if anyone has pictures from last night they'd like to post, please go here. Washingtonpost.com sports editor Jon DeNunzio is obviously trying to get more fans involved in our Nats coverage, and this might be a cool way to do it.

Hang on for the end of this one.

Wait, are you saying that instead of a beat writer, the Washington Post is going to use Fan Generated Content(tm)?

If so, I'm jumping on the Coverage is Lacking (r) bandwagon!

Posted by: SF Fan | March 31, 2008 5:28 PM

that's Lefty ONE OUT guy. Dang, Manny.

Saul!

No, that's not what he said.

Lastings!! Let's keep it going, guys!

Posted by: natsfan1a | March 31, 2008 5:38 PM

Anyone else notice that 6,7,8 in our line up is 0 for 2008? Do we have a pinch hit yet this season either, maybe 6-9 is 1 for 20+

Posted by: estuartj | March 31, 2008 5:38 PM

"maybe 6-9 is 1 for 20+"

Thank you, Matt Chico

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | March 31, 2008 5:41 PM

Niiiiiiiiiiiick!!

Posted by: natsfan1a | March 31, 2008 5:43 PM

Nick the stick, you are my hero!!!!! Welcome back, I never doubted you for a second!

Posted by: estuartj | March 31, 2008 5:43 PM

Good guys with the lead after NJ doubles home Millz. Yay.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | March 31, 2008 5:44 PM

go milledge!!

and i uploaded a couple of my shots of the HR last night. i'll add a few more later tonight when i get home. i probably took 200 or more photos, got to be at least a few more worth posting. a couple of good presidents race shots, for sure.

Posted by: 231 | March 31, 2008 5:44 PM

And AK is 2-3 with two BBs. Keep that coming.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | March 31, 2008 5:45 PM

and loduca makes it 9-6 with a double to the wall...

Posted by: 231 | March 31, 2008 5:46 PM

And then we get the insurance run on a misguided pickoff attempt. Double yay.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | March 31, 2008 5:46 PM

Finally seeing something from LoDuca

Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 5:47 PM

Lo Duca breaks the 6-8 curse, I was getting worried after almost 2 whole games...

Now Belli it's your turn to get your season started right...

Posted by: estuartj | March 31, 2008 5:48 PM

Woo, lotsa boos from the Phillies Phans.

Posted by: natsfan1a | March 31, 2008 5:48 PM

162 and 0????

Posted by: WA2CHI | March 31, 2008 5:49 PM

Whooooooooo

Posted by: Corey | March 31, 2008 5:49 PM

belly doubles off the wall! 10-6!

Posted by: 231 | March 31, 2008 5:49 PM

See, I was right when I said that Nick Johnson would be 100% to start the season and would immediately go on a tear. And when I vociferously supported the LoDuca signing on the grounds that the only doubles Schneiderman was going to sniff this year were sundaes or cocktails.

OK, I didn't say any of that.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | March 31, 2008 5:49 PM

Ask and you shall receive, WTG Belli. Now Mrs. Harris you don't want to be the only starter without a hit do you?

Posted by: estuartj | March 31, 2008 5:49 PM

estuartj - Thanks for the comment about the bottom part of the line-up being 0 for 2008. They apparently heard and woke up to blow open this game. Gotta love that Philly bullpen...

Posted by: Nats fan in NJ | March 31, 2008 5:51 PM

Anyone know who is warming up for the 9th now that it isn't a save situation?

My guess it's still Rauch...

Posted by: estuartj | March 31, 2008 5:51 PM

Nice move by Manny getting Meat Hook an AB.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | March 31, 2008 5:53 PM

Hey, Meat actually looks like he might weigh just 220 pounds when you look at his profile on gameday.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | March 31, 2008 5:54 PM

Meat Hook with an RBI double!

Posted by: natsfan1a | March 31, 2008 5:55 PM

Woohoo! Did he knock his helmet off?

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | March 31, 2008 5:56 PM

And Meat comes through with another double! Belly scores.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | March 31, 2008 5:56 PM

I have only radio contact. I was just typing a post about you, 506, but it got rejected. And here you are!

Posted by: natsfan1a | March 31, 2008 5:57 PM

What are the Team and MLB records for most doubles in a half inning, we just hit 4...

WTG DY BTW

Posted by: estuartj | March 31, 2008 5:57 PM

Gordon's line: .1 IP, 4H, 5ER, 1BB, 0K.

ikes-yay.

Posted by: Capitol Hill | March 31, 2008 5:58 PM

Nothing like letting Philly crawl back into it and then crushing them with a five-spot in the ninth.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | March 31, 2008 5:58 PM

Ahhhh, The Meathook got robbed... Oh well, I can honestly say that this team is going to be fun to watch! Go Nats- 1st Place in the NL East!

Posted by: cmcclure27 | March 31, 2008 5:59 PM

Hopefully it doesn't mean much, but dang, do I ever love our bench when we can have Young coming in to pinch hit instead of Batista or that shortstop from last year who couldn't hit worth anything...

re: posters of the first pitch:

This coming Sunday, April 6 & 13, if you purchase a paper at your local 7-11, CVS, Safeway, Rite-Aid, Giant or any other major retail store that sells the Sunday Post, you will receive one poster.

Ok, I know that Chico ended up giving up 3 runs in 5.1 innings. But I do like the line of only 1 walk. He may not have had the spring that Lannan had, but think he earned more stripes today.

Posted by: Nats fan in NJ | March 31, 2008 6:04 PM

joe, it'll only come if purchased retail? does that mean those of us who subscribe will have to pay twice to get it?

Posted by: 231 | March 31, 2008 6:05 PM

And Every Day Colome (aka the human rain delay) get a perfect 9th for the Nats to go 2-0.

Just FYI the last time the Nats were 2 games above .500 was in September of 2005.

Posted by: estuartj | March 31, 2008 6:05 PM

Thanks for the info, Jon. Will it also be included in the delivered papers?

============

Almost 100 percent sure the answer is yes. I am no circulation expert, but I think home-delivering several hundred thousand of those babies might be tricky, esp if it's raining that morning. I would find it annoying, as well, but hey, the .35/.50 edition is just 1.50 on Sundays.

Hey, there, O's Fan, don't feel bad, come on down to beautiful Nationals park. We have grate crab cakes, blah, blah, blah, and awesome new prospect Lastings Milledge, blah, blah, bold outrageous claim, one or two more spelling errors!

If you don't want to buy the paper twice, call them and cancel that Sunday's delivery.
But don't forget to tip your carrier anyway.

Excellent, Nats Exec, excellent! :-)

FIRST PLACE.

I love saying that.

I'm just saying.

Posted by: i hate walks | March 31, 2008 7:44 PM

I wasn't able to watch or listen today. I had to follow via Gameday while at work. That won't stop me from commenting though.

1. It's pretty impressive that the Nats beat two #1 starters in their own division in their first two games. To hang up an 11 when Philly's #1 starter is on the hill is particularly great.

2. Manny showed good judgment not pinch hitting for Chico in the 5th. If they start pulling starters after 4 innings the bullpen, will be fried by May 15th.

3. Speaking of the bullpen, it looks like someone will need to step up for the Chief. All the Cordero haters will get their wish. I'm afraid we won't like what we see. The Chief's ability to attack hitters under pressure and bounce back quickly from bad outings will be missed.

4. It was good to see all the extra base hits. I've been critical of Kearns in the past, but I'm starting to look on line for crow recipes. He's driving the ball to RF finally.

5. If you want to know how Nats fans sounded when booing last night during the pre-game, listen to how the Philly fans sounded as Gordon left today. I know they have the RIGHT to boo, but it still sounds classless no matter how much one might agree with the sentiment.

6. THE NATS ARE STILL IN 1ST PLACE

Posted by: #4 | March 31, 2008 7:59 PM

Things continue to swim in Baltimore. Opening pitch thrown out by Hank Peters, GM of the 83 team, caught by Rick Dempsey, WS MVP and catcher on the 83 team. Firstbase coach John Shelby was a member of the 83 team. Broadcaster Jim Palmer, also on the 83 team. And owner in waiting Cal Ripken was on that team as well. So, it's just like 1983, with a new scoreboard.

Meanwhile, on the field, the O's scored 2, while giving up only runs and one error against the always dangerous Rays, a team that changed its name during the offseason.

The Nats continue to sink, barely beating division doormat Atlanta, led by over the hill Tim Hudson, and then squeaking by the Phillies, who only barely won the division last year. The end of the preseason win over the O's obviously means nothing because it was a cold, dark night.

Did I mention we won the series in 1983? And we have a new scoreboard?

Posted by: Annoying O's Fan | March 31, 2008 8:11 PM

I don't think booing the Pres based on numerous examples of failures and booing your own team in the **first friggin game of the season** are at all the same thing. I still don't understand how exercising your right to express dissent is "classless" in the context of the Pres and the game last night. Not enough booing/being critical of authority in this country IMHO. Too much desire to be polite and not stir the pot.

Posted by: JennX | March 31, 2008 8:41 PM

Of course they don't. Why would you pay for a paper you didn't get?

Ah, but the Devil is in the details (or the box score, in this case).
The Orioles finished second in their game, while the Nationals were next to last.

Posted by: Rivalry? What rivalry? | March 31, 2008 8:45 PM

so if Manny doesn't leave Le Roi Ray to turn around Jimmy Rollins (who turned King around pretty good), who do you bring in to pitch to LH Rollins?

Posted by: CE | March 31, 2008 8:50 PM

thank god people booed. otherwise nothing would change. ::roll eyes::

sorry, i don't like the guy, i campaigned against him and voted against him. but i don't see what booing him when he throws out the first pitch accomplishes. if you want to change things, sitting in a seat at a baseball game and booing him won't do it. you have every right to do it, and while i'll defend your right to, i still think it doesn't show much class.

boo him when he makes a political statement, not when he supports your team.
