Andrews: Cordero does not need surgery
Chad Cordero's examination with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., is over, and Andrews reaffirmed the diagnosis of tendinitis. The club says Cordero will not need time on the disabled list.
Cordero had an MRI exam and what the club referred to as a "thorough examination of the shoulder." Andrews also found general weakness in the shoulder.
Right now, Cordero will continue to pitch and try to strengthen his shoulder through "various exercises designed in conjunction with the Nationals' athletic training staff."
I have a call into Cordero, and if/when he calls me back (I believe he has a 6 p.m. flight from Birmingham) you'll be the first to know.
Lineups:
New York:
Reyes -- 6
Castillo -- 4
Wright -- 5
Beltran -- 8
Church -- 9
Delgado -- 3
Pagan -- 7
Schneider -- 2
Santana -- 1
Washington:
Lopez -- 4
Guzman -- 6
Zimmerman -- 5
Johnson -- 3
Kearns -- 9
Milledge -- 8
Pena -- 7
Nieves -- 2
Redding -- 1
Talked to both Schneider and Church, and they are very, very impressed by the new park.
Also: Paul Lo Duca is feeling a bit better, the first time I've heard him say that since he was originally hit on the hand by a pitch 10 days ago. He swung the bat today, and will do so again tomorrow.

Church > Kearns.
That simple.

Two things:
From Baseball Prospectus:
Marcus (Fairfax): Whats your thoughts on Jordan Zimmerman??
Kevin Goldstein: Like it a lot, and he's off to a great start. Plus FB, plus BB, good command -- he could be a solid big league starter. That Potomac staff is pretty loaded, but one guy you may not have heard about is Jhonny Nunez, a lanky Dominican with 28 strikeouts against just two walks in 20.2 innings. 92-93 mph FB, low 80s SL with good break -- nice sleeper in that system.
The other thing i would like some info on, although somebody may have posted about it on the last entry from Barry. Ross Detwiler pitched only 2/3 of an inning today, gave up two runs for Potomac, and took the loss. Did he hurt himself?

Any update on Detweiler only lasting .2 innings this afternoon?

Good news about the Chief.
I like how the lineup looks tonight. If Lopez and Guzzie can continue to get on, you have to think Zim, Johnson, Kearns, Milledge and Pena can drive in some runs. Right? C'mon fellas, prove me right.

Woo hoo Will Nieves
What's more likely to happen?
1) WMP squares up on one of Johan's 96 mph'ers and peppers it off of the parking garage
or
2)WMP falls on his tookus, swinging at one of Johan's change-ups
...hope that oblique is in good shape if the latter is the case

From earlier today:
Detwiler struggled with his command today. He lasted only 2/3 of an inning getting pulled after throwing 40 pitches. He had several three-ball counts (though he walked only one) and gave up a home run.

Good news that he doesn't need surgery, but this is looking awfully similar to another pitcher who used to be on staff with the initials JP. Hopefully it's not the same and the Chief is back to his old self again.

Corey --
WMP's going to hit one that lands on top of the Red Porch restaurant, and they're gonna leave it sitting there.

So Cordero is going to go through his strengthening program while on the Nats roster when there are useful arms down in Columbus? I forget, is Schroder up? I'd feel better about him picking up innings while your hope to be young closer is getting to 100%.

No kidding ptbnl, I don't agree with the criticism of JimBow on the previous thread, but the roster management this year has been awful and IMO probably cost us 2-3 wins so far.
Took too long to DL Cordero and Young and then brought up Pena clearly before he was ready in what was obviously an act of desperation.

Hey, Bob L., kinda like the big ball they were supposed to be there to begin with....ahh it all finally comes full circle.
When you mentioned that the first image that popped into my mind was when Sosa put on an exhibition at the HR Derby in Atlanta (well, and in Milwaukee) when he hit one that stayed on the top of some building waaaaay out in CF and the camera zoomed in on it.
HR Derby's are fun - hopefully we can watch one on South Capitol in the near future. Best shows: Big Mac at Fenway, Sosa in ATL and Milwaukee, or Abreu in Detroit? I'm only 23 so forgive me for missing out on those that you see on ESPN Classic at Wrigley where it's like head-to-head (Mays vs Yogi or something)

Interesting lineup in that Harris was hot last night and we do not see him starting tonight. Is Pena going to match up better against Santana? Seriously?
Yeah, and just how do we use Cordero now? My guess is that we see him if we are up by 3 or down by 5. Too bad he is not a pinch runner.

One time we were visiting natsfan1b and taking in a game at Wrigley when a foul ball sailed up onto the overhang. The people in our section were waiting and waiting for it to fall back down and finally it did. We were all laughing and cheering when it descended and some of the players were looking up at us like "What the...?"

one night doesn't equal "hot." especially if it's just 2-3 with a double. it's not like he hit for the cycle or something. and he was 3-25 before that.

I'd be in favor of putting Chad on the DL and recalling Schroder. And I agree that the roster management has raised questions -- Barry, how about some quotes from JimBo on why we're playing a man or three short so often this year?

Harris is warmer than Pena.
Harris plays better defense than Pena.
On this team "hot" is all relative.

All-
I am an unapologetic Redding fan. Feel free to mock me later in the game.

Thanks for the update Barry. Speaking of injuries, did Elijah Dukes' hamstring actually fall out of his leg? Is "Grade II Pull" sort of like "double-secret probation"?
