Bowden: Hill tentatively starting Saturday

So Jim Bowden just watched batting practice and spent considerable time hanging with Casey Close and Brodie Van Wagenen, the agents for Ryan Zimmerman. Pleasant chit-chat. No, I don't have a long-term contract to announce.

I do, however, have a Shawn Hill update. Here's Bowden:

"We haven't made a final decision," Bowden said. "I think tentatively we're considering starting him Saturday in Florida. There's been no final decision. We'll make sure the week goes well and make a decision at the end of the week. But tentatively, I think that's what we're looking at."

So we'll continue to monitor that over the course of the week.

Also: Elijah Dukes took batting practice again today and ran for the first time. Bowden said he wanted to get Dukes out of the cold weather here, so he is sending him to Florida early. He'll meet the team in Miami for the weekend series with the Marlins (though he still won't be ready to play.)

Also, part 2: I checked in with both Brian Schneider and Ryan Church before hand. Asked them each if it would be a big deal to play against the Nationals. They had different takes.

"Definitely, to play against the old team, a lot of good guys on that team," Schneider said. "At the same time, I'm not trying to overhype it like other people might. Yeah, it's going to be fun, but I'm not going to make a big deal about it. That's not me. I'm not that kind of guy to over-hype things."

"Just another day," Church said. "Any time you're traded you're always going to run into your old partners. But that's just another day. The whole thing is I got a chance to play against them in spring training. It's probably bigger for Schneider (who was hurt during the spring). I hopefully got all that excitement, all that stuff, out of me in spring training."

So I asked Church if it was a big deal in the spring. "Oh, definitely," he said. "I was pressing, trying too hard. Tonight, just go out there and play."

We'll see how it goes. Keep in mind during Jackie Robinson Day/Night that it will be extra-special for one National. There are only two major league players -- in history -- to hail from the little town of Cairo, Ga.: Nationals utility man Willie Harris -- and Jackie Robinson.

Here are your lineups. Check out where Ryan Church is hitting.

Washington:
Guzman -- 6
Milledge -- 8
Zimmerman -- 5
Johnson -- 3
Kearns -- 9
Estrada -- 2
Pena -- 7
Belliard -- 4
Perez -- 1

Mets:
Reyes -- 6
Church -- 9
Wright -- 5
Beltran -- 8
Delgado -- 3
Pagan -- 7
Schneider -- 2
Castillo -- 4
Pelfrey -- 1

One other thing: Paul Lo Duca's thumb is still a bit beat up, though Manny Acta said he could have played tonight. He is available as a pinch hitter. Johnny Estrada gets his first start behind the plate tonight.

Nice timing Mr. Slowes - let's keep talk of the Mets HR woes to a minimum henceforth.

Posted by: lowcountry | April 15, 2008 7:26 PM

Does Acta have any control over what Millidge at all.
I'm sorry but being young and "learning the game" is BS. You do not run into outs and especially not at 3rd with Zim up. How hard is this to teach? How slow a learning is Milledge. Queue the Lastings and Acta apologists...

Is it too late to switch Kearns for Church in the Millege trade?

I like him batting 2nd, Frank and Manny never put him in a good position to succeed, they always wanted to make him into what they needed (LF Slugger or Lead-off CFer) instead of what he really is. We'll see how this works out for the Mets, but I like the creativity and flexibility in handling a talented player.

Ever since the Nats traded Schneider, Austin has been my wife's favorite player. But if I see him ground into another double play, I don't know that my marriage will survive it.

Watching mets tv feed on mlb.com down here, they say this is the best pelfrey has looked this year, though, really it isn't saying much against the light hitting nats to this point. Spotting his fastball in and out on the corners with a good slider. I guess our 'five guys' rotation doesn't stack up to mlb lineups. Perhaps they'd be better off working for five guys...sic.

Posted by: SC Nats Fan | April 15, 2008 8:31 PM

The other guys sure hit for power.

Posted by: flynnie | April 15, 2008 8:39 PM

Hey, wait a minute. I saw video and replays of LoBOOOOOca's HBP and his thumb didn't have anything to do with it. It was the outside of his right hand.

Thumb. Psh.

How come whenever the Nationals get a baserunner, not only can they not get a clutch hit, they can't even advance the runner. I swear I'm going to scream if I see another popout, strikeout or GDP in these situations...

Posted by: BSG | April 15, 2008 9:43 PM

And Austin Kearns fails to come thorough yet again...

Posted by: BSG | April 15, 2008 9:44 PM

Well I had a post prepared with a litany of complaints ready to post and then I decided what's the use. If you have been watching then you already know. When you are a fan of a team that sucks, you die a little every day and get reborn in the morning. For the moment, though, AAAARGTHABAArgthaBRgTHA!!!!!!

How low does this teams batting average have to go before people realize our hitting problem is bigger than our pitching problem?

Posted by: Ed | April 15, 2008 10:15 PM

Kearnsy is awful. I'd like to see him start coming through, but how long do we wait? We need some production out of the middle of the order. I'd throw WMP out in right and put Dukes out in left when he comes back.

Posted by: Fav61 | April 15, 2008 10:18 PM

So we keep a guy hitting .217 instead of a guy hitting .325 because the .217 guy is better? Got it!

Posted by: Ed | April 15, 2008 10:22 PM

Wow, then the Mets trade really makes sense. We get rid of a guy hitting .325 to keep a guy that can't even start on our team.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 15, 2008 10:26 PM

Didn't Barry write something toward the end of Spring Training to the effect that this was a "different team" hitting-wise?

To me, it looks no different from last year.

Posted by: Juan-John | April 15, 2008 10:28 PM

That .000 average Willy Mo's bringing to the table is really helping too isn't it?

Posted by: Ed | April 15, 2008 10:37 PM

"You do not run into outs and especially not at 3rd with Zim up."

I was watching the Caps, so I was fortunate to miss most of the game, but having Zimmerman at-bat with runners on base means a whole lot of nothing so far this year. Long term contract???

Posted by: PowerBoater69 | April 15, 2008 10:42 PM

It doesn't matter because it seems that NO ONE on the team is coming through when we have runners on base. Running into an out just lowers our LOB total for the game.

Posted by: BSG | April 15, 2008 10:48 PM

"I was watching the Caps, so I was fortunate to miss most of the game, but having Zimmerman at-bat with runners on base means a whole lot of nothing so far this year. Long term contract???"

werd. HE SUCKS ALMOST AS MUCH AS PAPI!!

Posted by: 231 | April 15, 2008 11:01 PM

Watched some of the game:More of the same!!!
Zimm - .211
Kearns .217
Belliard .200
Harris .105
R. Mackowick .000

Keep Zimm since he has won 50% of our games to date. He needs help with his batting, however. He is lost up there. Waive the rest as no one is going to pick them up - so what if they do . If this team is this bad then I would rather see some youngsters play even if they are over matched.

Memo to Kasten: When you finish playing with the amusement park at the stadium could you please fire Bowden and maybe promote Rizzo, better yet get Benefest.

Wow, 231, I think the bartender has your check ready.

I love listening to baseball on the radio, esp the dulcimer tones of Charlie and Dave, but these games are mostly painful, so far. Maybe they're taking a while to gel in the clubhouse and on the field. Maybe the absence of Schneider and the merry-go-round with new catchers is really affecting the pitching staff. Maybe this year is when they reach historically bad records (hope not, but . . . .) Then, again, it's only 2 weeks into the season.

Posted by: samantha7 | April 16, 2008 12:07 AM

Nicely said, Samantha7. Zimm popping up and Nick striking out (!!!) with the bases loaded, I mean, I counted on one run walked in when Nick came up then. He swung at two balls, which is not like him. I fell asleep only to wake up to the Big Apple rising up for David Wright in a replay. Who was pitching for the Mets? Sandy Koufax? Cy Young? Oh, no - they pitch for the Marlins this year. Palfrey. Lots of teams got well against the Nats when they went 9-25 last year but then something happened and they played .500 ball the rest of the season. I can't wait 'til they get to that part, but hope they don't do anything crazy, like fire Manny, in the meantime.

Posted by: flynnie | April 16, 2008 1:25 AM

"Pelfrey (2-0) pitched a career-high seven innings in his 19th major league start, his first scoreless outing in the majors."

"The Nats came into the game hitting a league low .234 and did nothing to improve that."

From AP Gamer. The Nats are Lourdes, where mediocre pitchers go for miracles.

Posted by: flynnie | April 16, 2008 1:35 AM

"The Nationals came into the game hitting .232, the lowest mark in the majors, and did nothing to improve that. They were shut out for the third time this season."

Bill Konigsberg, AP

King-1 run; Ayala 2 runs; Hanrahan 1 run.

A perfect storm.

estuartj has brought an interesting word to the conversation...creativity. its not a normal baseball word, there is no sabermetric stat. but i think its important to success. tony larussa has always had it, and he is one of the best managers of the past 30 years. i would like to see a little lineup shuffle, some creative thinking in situations, hit and run, fake bunt and run...really spice things up. if i may attempt some yogi wisdom...if you arent trying...you are failing

Posted by: love | April 16, 2008 2:05 AM

This awful, awful void of clutch hitting defies any description that is witty, urbane or even tasteful.

Posted by: Dale | April 16, 2008 6:47 AM

When the game is lost by the end of the first inning it is an apt metaphor for our woes.

Posted by: Dale | April 16, 2008 6:50 AM

I agree with mjames. Play the young guys. At least, win or lose it would be more interesting. Did I detect a note of sarcasm, 231?

Posted by: Jeeves | April 16, 2008 6:54 AM

sarcasm? me?

Posted by: 231 | April 16, 2008 7:17 AM

Pelfrey?!!?!

Wasn't she just convicted on prostitution-related charges?
