Break up Nats -- and Shawn Hill update
Felipe Lopez has fielded both balls hit to him in left without a problem, and he even received a few fistbumps from Jerry Morales and Austin Kearns after returning to the dugout following the first one.
The Phillies, by the way, look awful. Four errors -- Rollins (though it should have been on Howard), Utley, Moyer and Feliz. The natives here are getting restless. It's tense.
The Nationals, meanwhile, have five doubles -- two each by Cristian Guzman and Jesus Flores (who is, nonetheless, headed to Harrisburg soon). Jason Bergmann allowed a homer to Chad Coste (and Lopez even gave the proper courtesy look to that one), but has been quite efficient otherwise, striking out five and walking one through four. Nationals lead 6-1 and bat in the top of the fifth.
Shawn Hill: Threw in an intrasquad game today down in Viera, Fla. Threw 64 pitches over four innings (though a couple of those were quick, so they sent up extra batters -- the magic of a controlled environment). Allowed three hits, one earned run, walked no one and struck out four. Fastball was generally 86-89 mph, which is perhaps a tick slower than normal. Nationals' internal report was that he looked good.

He said the Nationals will finish 4th.
Enjoy this little run while it lasts guys.

Oh buddy I'm not desperate. The O's are on their way to the top of the AL East and will be in the WS soon enough.
No need to get bitter just because the O's are a much better organization (top to bottom) than your Nationals.

You're not trying to be funny, are you O's exec? What you just wrote pretty much defies all logic and flies in the face of the fact that the Orioles are probably about to post their worst season in the last 4-5 years and then will likely be rebuilding for another 1-2 after that.
While I can understand why an Orioles fan would want to troll the Nats in the light of such a season (nice record low attendance yesterday, btw), it's pretty classless.
Posted by: Michael | April 3, 2008 2:38 PM
Should Lopez have gotten to the Feliz liner? Or maybe the right question is, would an average left fielder have caught it, or was it just a normal hit?

Gotta love Nats fans discussing the O's on a Nats messageboard.
Just goes to show that there are tons of closet-O's fans out there but they're just scared to show their O's-fandom because of a few rude, ruthless, immature, boorish Nationals fans.
It's ok, come on out of the closet and support the real team in the area, the Orioles, and come on up to OPACY and eat those delicious CRABCAKES!!!!!

Someone has to talk to Jason Bergmann about his performance. I mean 0-for-3?! We're doomed!

Technically, only one quality start so far - Redding's outing last night.
But if Bergmann goes another inning and 2/3, the Nats will be averaging quality start numbers over the first four games.

Only Zimm and Bergmann don't have hits today, thus far. I predict Zimmerman having 50 hits this year, all of them home runs that win games.

on MLB gameday, it shows the release location, the curve, and the arrival location of each pitch. Along with Spd, break angle, and pfx, not sure what that last one is.

I guess you might say that Rivera doesn't have his best stuff today. Waste of a good outing by Bergy. Let's get out of the inning. Zimmerman is up next.
Posted by: Bob L. Head | April 3, 2008 3:05 PM
Man, 3 BS in 4 games for our bullpen. Perhaps they need a team meeting.
Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 3:06 PM
Eight straight singles?
Posted by: lowcountry | April 3, 2008 3:06 PM

Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 3:07 PM
HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA
It gets even better.
Ray King throws 1 pitch, hits a batter and loads the bases.
Classic.
Posted by: O's Exec | April 3, 2008 3:07 PM
Five of those runs were on Bergmann, though. He wasted his own effort.

Posted by: NatsNut | April 3, 2008 3:08 PM

Posted by: natrat | April 3, 2008 3:08 PM
Ray King is quite the jokerster eh?
He's atleast making me laugh.
2 pitches, 1 hit batter, 1 single, 1 run.
Phils - 7
Nats - 6

Time for the Nats to rip up that awful Phillies bullpen again
Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 3:10 PM
Shoot...I disappear for an hour and a half to go to a meeting, and now instead of a 5-0 lead, the Nats are losing 7-6. What the heck? At least a double play just ended that horrible half-inning...
Posted by: BSG | April 3, 2008 3:10 PM
And the Nats magical run OFFICIALLY comes to a close with an utter collapse.
Posted by: O's Exec | April 3, 2008 3:10 PM
Looks like the boys in the bullpen started drinking champagne after Bergmann had such a studly start and the bats racked up five in the first.
Rivera starts off with a wild pitch and (how many batters later?) King starts off with a hit batsman.
I _DO NOT_ want to see the Nats lose this game.
C'mon Nats! Rev those engines! Let's get some runs!
N-A-T-S! Nats! Nats! Nats!

Five earned for Bergmann, yeah, but the bullpen is supposed to bail him out. I hate inherited runners scored. And seven straight singles with a HBP in between. We needed that DP a long time ago.
Let's go Zim!

If the Nats do wind up coughing this one up, there will be more than one source of irony.
Like Manny giving away a baserunner with the double steal.
Or the stalwart bullpen giving up inherited runs, their own runs, Bergmann's chance at the win, and eventually the game.
Or the fact that all six Nats runs come not against the bullpen, but rather against Moyer.
Posted by: John in Mpls | April 3, 2008 3:19 PM
Well that last inning sucked. Let's hope we get a chance to see Tom Gordon again.
By the way, at opening day I realized I don't particularly like where my 20-game pass seats are (RF Bullpen area, under the scoreboard). Anyone know if I can easily trade those in for a 20-game pass elsewhere in the stadium? Obviously I understand I'd have to pay the difference if I move to a different area. But am I stuck with the tickets I have?

Juan-John -- I still like the double-steal, even if it cost an out. We were up by five and keeping the pressure on 'em. No reason to be anything but agressive in that situation, imo.
But we better have another one of those five-run innings soon, because I have to get on a bus in half an hour.
Posted by: i hate walks | April 3, 2008 3:24 PM
As I said previously, this game and this season has a long way to go well, maybe not this game. We can't win them all (darn it!)and two out of three is'nt bad.
Your thoughts on the over/under when out resident troll gives up the ghost with the median being 40 games. I say 35. The Nats will have about 16-18 wins and the O's about 10. At that point the Troll will go away because it will be soooo easy to ignore him.

O.k., somebody reel me back in. But, seriously, quality starts for those guys against a pretty potent order.
