Comeback complete -- but chance wasted

Nats get even on Cristian Guzman's single to left field, one that may have glanced off the glove of third baseman Pedro Feliz and definitely glanced off shortstop Jimmy Rollins. It all allowed Ronnie Belliard to score from second, making it 7-7.

But the Nationals then loaded the bases for Ryan Zimmerman, exactly the situation they wanted against left-hander J.C. Romero. Zimmerman hit the ball decently up the middle, but Rollins got to it for the forceout at second.

Luis Ayala on in the bottom of the eighth. Good ballgame.

I just love that the Phillies are having to work so hard just to avoid a sweep. Go Nats

This is a cardiac game, and the Chief isn't even involved!

Posted by: Gibby | April 3, 2008 3:57 PM

I am past tired of the Phillies TV announcers referring to their shortstop as "J-Roll."

Posted by: McBride | April 3, 2008 3:59 PM

UGH. You said it! The "s-word"!

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:00 PM

technically speaking for fielding fundamentals - if zimmerman would have put his body in front of the ball instead of trying to backhand the short hop, it is possible he would have had a chance to make the throw after knocking it down. it wasnt hit hard enough for him to not to be able to slide a step to this right.

but, fan speaking - that ball was hit hard and he did a good job getting a glove on it.

this is going extras.

WOW walk Utley to pitch to Howard

Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 4:01 PM

ummm, we're walking Utley to get to Howard with two outs?

Posted by: Bob L. Head | April 3, 2008 4:02 PM

ummm, we're intentionally walking Utley to get to Howard, with two out?

Posted by: Bob L. Head | April 3, 2008 4:02 PM

Now walking Howard too, after a passed ball

Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 4:03 PM

OK, I was surprised enough to post that twice, but in reality the first one said it was rejected.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | April 3, 2008 4:03 PM

After the wild pitch they might as well put Howard on, too.

Posted by: Nick | April 3, 2008 4:04 PM

playing with fire, Nats

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:04 PM

Geez, what's with the wild pitches already?

Posted by: Bob L. Head | April 3, 2008 4:05 PM

The last one should have been caught, imo.

Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 4:06 PM

Whew.

Posted by: natsfan1a | April 3, 2008 4:07 PM

Tom Gordon coming on to pitch, I'm calling it that Lopez hits the game winner...

Posted by: Good Nattitude | April 3, 2008 4:07 PM

It's kinda nice thinking we can hold our own in a slug-fest, eh, gang? Last year I felt we could get lucky and have a big inning, but had to be dominate to win. Now I feel like we can have a big inning and they can too and still have a chance.

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:08 PM

Gordon getting the "Santa Treatment" from the Phils fans

Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 4:08 PM

Tom Gordon back in --- let's pull out those pitch charts from the other night and light him up again

Posted by: Corey | April 3, 2008 4:08 PM

Kearns is having some great at bats this year.

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:10 PM

God, it's great to see "Gordon ERA: 135.00" Though I guess Kearns just dropped that. Still, hilarious.

Posted by: mrlogical | April 3, 2008 4:12 PM

Quick! Get ina fight with Lopez! Last time Manny talked him down in Spanish he hit a triple.

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:18 PM

So now we pinch hit for Boone, the 'emergency' catcher. Manny is playing with fire here...

Posted by: natrat | April 3, 2008 4:18 PM

can someone find out what kind of dip nick johnson uses? whatever it is, im on board with a large man crush. hey kids, dont emulate big leaguers.

Posted by: theraph | April 3, 2008 4:18 PM

506, I remember Kearns did that quite a bit last year. I remember one at bat, the dude was 0-2 and still eaked out something like 11 pitches and either walked or got a hit, I can't remember. But it was awesome.

Posted by: NatsNut | April 3, 2008 4:19 PM

Harris or Mack could catch if they had to.

Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 4:21 PM

I guess you can't fault a guy who's already 3 for 5 with 2 2Bs and an RBI

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:23 PM

OH THEY LIED ON CBS!!!! GAVE HIM AN F7!!!

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:24 PM

Something wrong with Da Meat? Thought he was available for pinch hitting duty, but Manny brought in Willie Harris and his .111 batting average against Gordon.

Posted by: Salty | April 3, 2008 4:25 PM

"Harris or Mack could catch if they had to."

They have both been spent now...

Posted by: natrat | April 3, 2008 4:26 PM

Great, just great. SECOND bases-loaded chance and they don't capitalize.

Here's hoping for extra innings...

Posted by: Juan-John | April 3, 2008 4:26 PM

Why use Harris there? Wouldn't Dmitri have been a better choice to knock in somebody?

Posted by: Brewer | April 3, 2008 4:26 PM

What is the record for times loading the bases and not scoring -- both clubs combined? (And yet still having 7 runs each)

Posted by: GoNats | April 3, 2008 4:27 PM

I think Dmitri is more injured than they are sayiing to the media

Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 4:27 PM

... Although with Holey Butt pitching, I dunno...

Posted by: Juan-John | April 3, 2008 4:29 PM

I figured he was injured, but Manny said he was available for PH duty. I'm watching gamecast so I was curious if they said anything about it on radio/TV.

Posted by: Salty | April 3, 2008 4:30 PM

We may abscess about his butt too much.

Posted by: natsfan1a | April 3, 2008 4:30 PM

Colome has never been the same since he came back from his butt-infection. I'm through with him.

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:30 PM

They didn't have any info on the radio but were speculating that Young was not available when Harris came in.

Leadoff double and a four-pitch walk.

Man.

Posted by: John in Mpls | April 3, 2008 4:33 PM

Ahh, yes. Just as I drew it up. Go ahead and walk the big guns, put yourself in position to get an out at any base, and get Werth to ground out.

Deep breaths.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | April 3, 2008 4:34 PM

DP! Woop!!

Posted by: natsfan1a | April 3, 2008 4:34 PM

What's a Nats-Phils series without extra innings?

Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 4:35 PM

That gamecast thing is cool. How do they know Gordon's curve breaks 12 inches??

Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 4:35 PM

Nats and Phillies playing extra-inning baseball? The more things change...

Philadeplphia's bench is empty. Nats have an injured young. Not a lot of pitchers to go around. Someone needs to win this thing quickly.

Posted by: John in Mpls | April 3, 2008 4:36 PM

New post.

Posted by: natsfan1a | April 3, 2008 4:38 PM

If Manny isn't going to use DMH as a pinch-hitter with runners on base as in the ninth inning, wouldn't the team be better off if he were on the DL?

Posted by: leetee1955 | April 3, 2008 4:43 PM

4 pitches. Ridiculous.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 3, 2008 4:55 PM

Did someone send Colome the memo? I thought you loaded the bases to get a force ands a dp, not battle the next batter. I listened to the game online, can someone clue me in on his pitches. I saw the Gameday display of where the pitches crossed the plate (or, rather, didn't) But was he not trying to throw strikes. He's got to get the batter to put the ball in play. That's the game plan, but couldn't find the plate.
Also, the radio team made it sound like Colome was just standing and watching instead of covering 3rd on that bunt. Was that the case?
Constructive criticism, they have got to get a handleon these wild pitches and passed balls. It's not good for my heart.
