Milledge back, Estrada gone
After today's game -- an enthralling pitcher's duel, and a 1-0 San Francisco win -- the Nats recalled CF Lastings Milledge, who's recovered from his groin injury. They also decided to stop carrying four catchers on their roster.
To corresponding with Milledge's return, the Nationals designated catcher Johnny Estrada for assignment, a decision that will terminate Estrada's disappointing, injury-filled year with the team. The Nationals have 10 days to either trade or release Estrada, signed this offseason to a one-year, $1.25 million deal.
"I'm the odd man out," said Estrada, who had just been recalled from the DL on July 18 (right elbow).
Here are a bit more of his thoughts.
Q: Did you think you'd get a longer look before the team made a decision?
I thought. I played in the first two games right off the break which I thought was a surprise, and I didn't expect to play those two games. But I had that and today. There's not much I can show with that. I thought I called a pretty good game today and worked well with Redding.
Q: What's your preference for what comes next?
Mentally, I'm ready to go home. It's been a grind for me all season. I've been hurt. This is the first time I had surgery this past offseason. My arm never felt right the whole year; it still doesn't really feel right. A couple months left in the season, and I'm spent. It's been a long time coming back from rehab, and I'm ready just to go home. Work hard in the offseason and see what happens next year. Obviously they can trade me, do whatever they want with me, but mentally that's where I'm at right now.
Q: When it's all said and done, how frustrating has this whole year been?
Yeah, it's been frustrating... I still know I have a lot left in the tank, and look forward to playing against the Nationals.
Q: Do you even consider it an option to report to Class AAA Columbus (if you clear waivers)?
[Heck] no. You won't see me in Triple AAA. You can print that, too.

Wow, you wouldn't expect him to be happy about it, but "can't wait to play against the nationals" and "Hell No, you won't see me in AAA"?
Bitter.

Adios Estrada...don't let the door hit ya.
Posted by: Corey | July 24, 2008 8:05 PM
You can't blame him for not wanting to go to the minors, especially after like 3 months of rehabbing down there.
It sure will be good to have thrilledge back in the lineup though.

Pick your reason:
4 catchers
Hanging Cordero out to dry
No first baseman
Not enough for Rauch
Too much for Guzzy
FBI investigation
10m for fat Dmitri
On pace for 100 losses
You may not agree with all or even most. You only have to agree with enough to think...

I can't wait until you play the Nats again too. You will weigh about 350 pounds by then. They paid you way too much, just be happy.

The good I see out of this from your standpoint is that due to the veteran mistakes JimBow made and Mackowiak and now Estrada releases, there is probably going to be tighter scrutiny on JimBow's veteran pickups. Mackowiak and Casto are really the same player, but Casto is less expensive. And JimBow had to know about Estrada's elbow problems when he signed him after the Mets acquired and then released him practically the same day. Dammit, Omar Minaya strikes again.

Am I missing something? What in the name of !#$% does he have to be bitter about? "Can't wait to play the Nationals."???? YOU were the fat disappointment, not the Nationals. Go !#$% yourself. What a turd.

Wait, I thought this was a good thing. Estrada and LoDuca were just around until Flores was ready to stay in the bigs. Their job is done now that Flores is here, though lucky for LoDuca 1b is still a gaping hole. Was Estrada ever considered more than just a temp? He was signed, he did what was needed, now good riddance.

dk,
Save your wrath for AK. The at bat that should have produced an RBI was Zimmerman's. All he needed was a deep fly, or a slow grounder to the right side, or, gasp, a base hit.
Posted by: dale | July 24, 2008 6:35 PM
although correct that any of that by zim would have produced a run, i cut zim a pass because he has produced in those same situations countless times and tied and won games for the nats.
however the stiff that is austin ks has never--- thats n e v e r--- come through for the nats when it counted. not once that i can recall. he is an infamous rally killer. he should be sent down for assignment. and the assignment is read a freakin book on how to hit a fast ball, curve and change.

Ready to go home? WHAT?!?! Ready to pack it in and shut it down? If you dont wanna play in the big leagues, and would rather go home, you deserve to get the Barry Bonds treatment.

Would have been funny if Tolman had sent Willie Harris home on Zim's popup and answered the press with "Well, Kearns was up next so we were out of options."

Check the box scores for these games:
7/10, 4/19, 5/1, 5/6, 7/5.
I can go through last year's boxes too.
Want some bad Zimmerman games?
5/11, 4/3, 4/18, etc, etc...
Our memories tend to be awfully selective when it comes to game winning and losing plays.

"He was signed, he did what was needed, now good riddance." What the [heck] did he do? He sucked in the preseason, sucked in the regular season, got hurt, came back, didn't suck quite so bad. Good riddance.
Posted by: MVM | July 24, 2008 9:11 PM
What's he bitter about? He signed with a bad elbow, used the Nats to get it somewhat better. "Can't wait to play the Nationals"? Well I can't wait till the Nats play a team fool enough to pick up a catcher who can't catch, throw or hit.
Posted by: Ray | July 24, 2008 9:13 PM
We better hurry up and get the Long Island Ducks on the schedule for next season then.
Posted by: Chris | July 24, 2008 9:17 PM
When the catcher throws the ball to second base and it has an arc on it, that's a sign. This clod always reminded me of one of those softball players on the Mall huffing and puffing until he can reach for his next beer. And to think this clown was (and PLoD) were robbing at-bats from Kid Flores (leading the NL in batting with RISP). What was JimBo smoking? Oh, never mind...

Well, hey, I see no reason to be hateful, c'mon. Good luck to you, Johnny. That's business.

Now let me get this straight Jaba the Hut(Estrada) is complaining you're kidding right? how he got on this team is a joke he is overweight and thats being kind, maybe Jimbo thought he was gm of the our pro football team Dimitri,Estrada, defensive tackels. Now about todays loss we can't get a run home with two supposed cleanup hitters back to back not even a long fly to tie the game up!!! They are the worst situational hitters in baseball someone had better get Zimmerman some help before he is ruined,Kearns needs to be traded asap!!!!
Posted by: DARGREGMAG@AOL.COM | July 24, 2008 9:47 PM
The sky is falling. And it's Jim Bowden's fault.
Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | July 24, 2008 9:50 PM
this is terrible news for the company that supplies cheesy poofs to the Nats clubhouse
Posted by: Livo's Lunch | July 24, 2008 9:53 PM
after allocating close to 20% of the payroll on useless signings like LoDuca, Mackowiak, Ray King, and Estrada, have to wonder what other genius moves Jimbo has planned for next season
Posted by: Livo's Lunch | July 24, 2008 9:57 PM
Wow, folks, so nasty about Estrada. So, he was a little impolitic ... big deal. Are you always charming when things don't go your way? (I know I'm not.)
I hope that tomorrow is a better day for Estrada. And I'm happy that Nieves will be around for another day.
Posted by: dcbatgirl | July 24, 2008 10:04 PM
I'll play that game with you 506!
My meatloaf is burned, and it's Jim Bowden's fault for distracting me with the announcement on Chad.
Or how about this one?
It's raining today, and it's Jim Bowden's fault as the skies cry at the Nationals plight.
For the record, it is not raining here AND I did not make meatloaf. Nor will I in any future event.

I'm with you, dcbg, Chico basically interviewed a guy who just got fired. Did we expect him to be magnanimous? This was the right move to make, but let's have just a smidgen of compassion. It sucks to be injured and not be able to do your best.
At least he went out on a high note -- throwing a base stealer out, even though it was on a pitchout.

Except for Ayala's meltdown, we'd be hailing Johnny Estada for his game-winning pinch hit. He didn't get much of a shot, but he knew was a possibility coming in. That's the way the game is.
Posted by: Nats24 | July 25, 2008 2:48 AM
Hasta la vista, Estrada.
And what's with the ripping on meatloaves, Natty? A well-made one is a great comfort food, IMO (unless you don't eat meat in which case never mind). ;-)

Good job, section 114.
People around here need to quit drinking the Zimmerman kool-aid.
I'm just going to put this out there...but, it wouldn't be terrible if the Nats didn't re-sign him. Especially if he is demanding big bucks.
Posted by: DCmarathoner | July 25, 2008 9:35 AM
114 and Marathoner
The stats provided merely confirm what we all have known--Kearbs abd Zim produced in the clutch better last season than this. But the averages for this season are such that it was and is reasonable to have expected either one to have tied or won the game. As for Zim, his defensive play compliments his bat and we will rue his non-signing if it comes to pass. Money, of course, is always negotiable.

Estrada:
Take your .170 batting average and get the heck out of here. Go home, you worhtless whiner!
I can't wait to see you again playing against the Nationals so you can strike out, pop out, foul out, or otherwise make an out when we need one!
The Nationals were wrong to have even given you a chance to show you can play. You are a no-good, thankless bum and I don't want you in AAA polluting the minds and attitudes of our future players!

With PLoD the de-facto first baseman for the time being, that means Flores and Nieves will see most of the action behind the plate. An excellent turn of events.
