Who's Coming
Based on the lineup posted below, you'll understand the importance of these updates. At least the first two.
* Lastings Milledge, out since June 28 because of a groin injury, will begin his rehab assignment tomorrow when he joins the Nats' rookie ball affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. Already, according to Manny Acta, Milledge has been running and taking swings -- yes, those good ol' "baseball activities." So he's ready for his next test.
* So far at Columbus, 3B Ryan Zimmerman is 2-for-7 with one double and one RBI. All told, he's 5-for-17 during the rehab assignment. My guess: He'll be in uniform with Washington when the series against San Fran begins Tuesday.
* Wily Mo Pena is going to have his shoulder surgery on Tuesday. The usual suspect, Dr. Tim Kremchek, gets the nod.

Isn't Young on insulin? I know Type 2 is quite different than Type 1, but it seems to me that high BGL is one of the most immediately resolvable medical conditions there is. This is coming from the parent of a Type 1.
I would think that DY could just take an insulin injection (or get it through his pump if he is on one) and would be available to pinch hit by the late innings. But then again, I'm not there. . .

who's going?

Guess we'll know that by August 1.

Reading Feinstein's "Living on the Black." Just finished the part when Nieves got DFAd from the Yankees. They loved the guy too. I really hope he isn't a casualty in this 4-catcher situation.

Where in the world is NatsNut?

Now way in Hell does Nieves become the casualty. When Zimmerman comes back, Estrada is history, gone, Pattersoned.

Agreed TimDz. That's why Estrada has started the past few games in hopes that the Nats can trade him for a ham sandwich, at least, if not grant his outright release.

lannan almost got his own rbi for the game.

Three runs! Lannan's going to faint.

Is this the beginning of the breakup of the Bowden Bunch? Paging SoCH!
CINCINNATI -- Barry Larkin left open the possibility of returning to the Cincinnati Reds in some capacity Saturday, shortly before his induction with three others into the team's Hall of Fame.
The former Reds shortstop is a special assistant to Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden. Larkin has hoped for a chance to work with the Reds' front office in some capacity since he retired as a player after the 2004 season.

if what just happened with fatstrada not being to handle the kearns throw to get jurrjens at the plate wasn't so sad, it would almost be funny. but it's not.

It was hard to see on MLB.tv. Jurrgens was definitely out if Estrada catches Kearns's throw?

I'm thinking that maybe if D. Young spent less time drinking in Pentagon City bars, he might be a more effective player.

Ok, I was all for signing Estrada. I thought that b/t him and PLoD, we'd be able to ship at least one off at the trade deadline for a few bats and a bag of baseballs, at least. Turns out, I was so incredibly wrong. Cut both of them when Milledge and Zimm are ready and move on.

no question.

Is it me, or is our announcing duo a couple of dopes? Langerhans jacks one over the head of the outfielder and they call the play like it is a routine out. Is there any wonder why the Nats and MASN have the lowest fan viewing ranking in the league? These guys just plain stink. Give us someone who puts some excitement into the game please!

I watch MASN with the sound down so I can hear the radio play-by-play.

I also watch MASN with the sound down so I can hear the radio play-by-play. But I like carpenter, I think sutton is that bad!

Langerhans will be the one to be sent down when Zimmerman is ready. After that Casto when Milledge is ready.
Posted by: Count Demoney | July 19, 2008 9:48 PM
It's hard for me to see Langerhans going down when Zimmerman returns, given the current scarcity of outfielders.

fav61, turn down the sound and listen to Charlie and Dave.

Ah, I see that point has already been made.

Nice to win tonight.

Definitely. Nice to see the bats coming to life.

They just mentioned on the postgame report that Dmitri is headed to the DL and Zimm will be activated for Tuesday. Now, we just need to find someone to take Estrada off our hands! Is it just me, or does he not sort of look like he stepped out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon? I think he looks exactly like they would have drawn the slugger for the other team...
Posted by: Brewer | July 19, 2008 10:30 PM
Funny that whatever's wrong with Dmitri happens right after the break. I wonder how they'll cover up the truth on this.
Posted by: nattily yours | July 19, 2008 11:12 PM
Dmitri Young is a punk. Type 2 diabetes is a manageable condition. For $5 million a year, it is up to him to manage it. He came in to ST ridiculously fat and out-of-shape after vowing to lose weight in the offseason, suffered back injuries (which are another name for fatness injuries in his case) and now can't manage his diabetes. And when he is playing, his fatness makes his ability to play the game a joke--he can't field, can't run, and can't hit with power. The Nats have given him every chance and opportunity and he has let them down.
