Rocky Recap

Joe Gibbs just concluded his briefing on Rocky McIntosh, the linebacker from Miami the Skins moved up to draft. Washington traded its second round pick next year and one of its sixth-round picks from 2006 to move up from 53. Gibbs said McIntosh was the LB they coveted and "our guess was at 53 we were in trouble." Mcintosh had very high Wonderlic test scores, Gibbs said, and is "explosive and athletic." McIntosh can play all three LB positions, but would seem a natural to push journeyman Warrick Holdman on the weak side, with Lemar Marshall and Marcus Washington excelling already in the other spots. McIntosh has the ability to rush the passer, and could also help free up Marcus Washington to get after the quarterback more from the strong side. The Redskins clearly targetted a linebacker in this draft, and Gibbs said they are unlikely to move up any

The Skins' Surprise

Did the Redskins give up too much for Rocky McIntosh? The consensus seems to be that they did. What do you think?

Skins on the Clock

Okay, so the Skins move up half a draft to get the 35th pick with their old trading budies, the J-E-T-Sw. They're 53rd pick is surely gone, and I am guessing at least their third round pick next season. We'll find out for sure in a moment. Nothing confirmed out here yet. Have to think they're going linebacker here. My gut is the kid from Miami, Rocky McIntosh.

Why am I not buying this

I am a little skeptical about LenDale's weight claims. He looks like he could fit right in on one of those commercials with Kirstie Alley. Dude put up some big time numbers, though. Clearly, he's the story of the draft from here on out.

I have to take care of my family

During the first few hours of the draft, the networks ESPN and the NFL Network have adopted the device of scanning the living rooms of the players who have not yet been drafted. ESPN's Suzy Kolber made it a point of mentioning numerous times that Matt Leinart had to WAIT 90 MINUTES before being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals. Now we see sad-faced LenDale White trying to remain composed in that, unlike an anvil, he is falling out of the first round. His pride will be hurt. So, there's that. But if 2006 is anything like 2005 _ and for his sake nothing like 2004 _ LenDale White won't be so affected too much in the wallet. First round picks in 2005 averaged a guaranteed signing bonus of 1.62 million, while second rounders averaged $1.37 million. The year before, White would have reason to have his eyes sag. In that

Running back anyone?

Still one big name back out there. Can't see White slipping too much deeper here, certainly not past the Colts. This draft has been as light on WR and RBs in the first round as any in recent memory.

Randle El's replacement

Steelers just moved up to replace Antwaan Randle El, who signed with the Skins. Shows the diverse ways these teams operate. Skins would rather spend in free agency on a player in essence developed elsewhere, while the Steelers often let they top free agents walk and replace them through the draft. They really are very different franchises. Not saying one is right and one is wrong, but the Steelers have been an elite team for a long, long time, and the Skins have just returned to respectability under Joe Gibbs.

Bizarro World

So I run to Subway 'cause all this sammich talk has made me hungry and I run into one of The Post's fotogs who's chowing down before going on assignment to the White House correspondents' dinner tonight and he's wearing a tuxedo. Wearing a tux! To Subway!

What are the odds a third straight dude named Joseph gets picked here at 25? That would have to be some kind of record. if I'm Acorsi, I've got to go Joseph here.

Hate is a very strong word

Having a background as a baseball writer, I often responded to being called a "seamhead" by referring to football as the "Chinese food of American sports" in that it lacked the permanence _ records, history, etc. _ of the Grand Old Game. I don't hate college football, but it definitely lacks wide intrigue. The college game is more resembles machine politics than Egg Foo Young. But after 25 picks, only five conferences have been represented: ACC: 9 Big 10: 7 Big 12: 3 Pac 10: 3 SEC: 3 No sport, with the exception of women's college basketball, is so concentrated.

A moment of silence

That 22nd pick would have been the Skins first round selection had they had not dealt it as part of the package to get Jason Campbell last year. Just thought I would pass it along. Only 29 picks to go until the Redskins are on the clock! Man, this is flying by.

3:48 p.m. and not a minute too soon!

After cracking open the second 32-ounce bottle of Snapple, commemorating 1) Daniel Snyder's arrival to Redskins Park 30 minutes ago (the Skins are 29 picks away from being On the Clock) and 2) trying to remain just alert enough to figure out how Keith Richards could fall out of a *palm* tree, I submit my first draft entry. Jason rightfully asked about Miami coach Nick Saban's blazer. I believe the color was "pistachio." For last six weeks, the NFL draft has focused on the Big Three quarterbacks and USC running back Reggie Bush, which is proof of this made-for-television hype machine. But thus far, of the first 22 picks, 15 have been defensive players. If anything is strange thus far, it is in the lack of of offensive linemen taken. So far, one: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, fourth pick, to the Jets.
