Jets Set To Go With Pennington as Starter?

According to a published report, the New York Jets already have decided to go with Chad Pennington as their starter at quarterback.

The Newark Star-Ledger reported that first-year coach Eric Mangini isn't ready to announce the choice but has picked Pennington, who is working his way back from a second surgery on his throwing shoulder.

The Jets obtained quarterback Patrick Ramsey in an offseason trade with the Washington Redskins, but Ramsey often has struggled in practices. The Jets also have holdover quarterback Brooks Bollinger and rookie Kellen Clemens, a second-round draft selection out of Oregon.

Sure, the Jets will start that China Doll of a QB until they see his arm strength against a full rush or he get pummelled and hurts his shoulder again.

Ramsey should be starting by the 2nd game.

It's two bad injuries have wrecked Chad's career, but even with a busted wing, he's better than happy feet Ramsey.

And too bad the Skins are set at every position except QB. Think that's important?

I think the Jets should just get rid of Pennington! He's never going to be the same QB he was. His arm power is gone. The Jets should just start their rookie.

I feel bad for the guy. Someone needs to just stick him in somewhere and let him play until he works out all the kinks.

I think the skins are fine at QB. If Brunnell goes down, they get an excuse to stick Campbell in there. If he's ever going to start for the skins we're going to have to suffer the learning curve at some point. Personally I'd like to see him start this year. The defense can hold it together, and now we've got a return threat that should be able to keep us within 20 yards of field goal range. Portis can handle that much. And those receivers should be able to help him out. If this guy is the stud they think he is he should be able to get it together under those circumstances, don't you think?

Ramsey's happy feet were a by-product of trying to survive. The Skins O-line has been weak for years, and looks to be again this year. If he had been playing behind protection he would have had better stats. And Gibbs not having faith in him, after lying to his face that he did, would crush anyone's spirit.

Like I've said for a while, the Skins are always the best team in the NFL on paper, but never on the field. I doubt this year will be any different.

Really no surprise with Pennington being chosen. But with his history of injuries, I am sure Ramsey will get some significant snaps this year. Hope he does well.

Anyone know if the skins have any promising draft, or after-draft signings that they think can make an impact on the o-line if someone goes down? I can't imagine Gibbs fielding a team with less than a solid and deep o-line. Or is o-line help the most scarce commodity in the NFL. Anyone?

Patrick Ramsey? Who? Never heard of him. Now, about the Redskins...

Posted by: caphill | August 2, 2006 2:16 PM

Sorry 'TC', but the Cowboys are and have been the paper champions of the league, not the Redskins. Over the past few years Dallas has had Parcells, Testaverde, Bledsoe, Terry Glenn, Eddie George, Keyshawn Johnson, Peerless Price, Marcellis Willey, LaRoi Glover, Terrence Newman, and, most overrated of them all, Roy Williams... all with 0 playoff victories to show for it. The only NFC team that has been shut out of the 2nd round of the playoffs longer are the Lions. The LIONS!

Great news! Chad is the man!!! Go Herd!!

Remember Brad Johnson and Trent Green to name a couple do not write off Ramsey so quickly he did win some games for us here even with the incredible amount of coaching changes we have had to endure. I may be one of the few but I still hold out hope that he can compete in the NFL. I definitely have my doubts about Brunnel though?????

I don't know why we are even talking about the Jets. They are bums. U know... As for the Redskins, we good at quarterback. I believe in Brunell, he played well in the middle of the season last year. He was suspect at the beginning, and was hurt through the end. All he has to do is stay healthy. And all he is going to do is manage games. I've seen worst quarterbacks when Super Bowls. We have the most talent in the NFC hands down. We will make the super bowl this year!!!!

Pennington is the better QB. Heck he's more talented than a lot of starting QBs in the NFL. And Ramsey probably will be starting by the second or third game. Patrick, this is your first/last big shot.

Poor Patrick. Steve "NFL failure as both player and coach" Spurrier screwed him up good.

Posted by: tallbear | August 2, 2006 4:07 PM

Ramsey, I like him and believe given a chance he will suceed.
He never started games well, but he's a gamer and while playing for us he was always a second half qb. He'll have to play better in camp, continue to be resilient and mentally tough to be able to grab the #2 spot when Chad goes down. And Chad will more than likely go down. Too bad, I was a Pennington fan too.

People comment on the SKINS o-line not being solid or having any depth. The starting oline is as formidable as any in the league and buges has been working with draft picks and backups for 2 or 3 years now, they are untested, but unprepared, i doubt it.

the SKINS at qb are fine, brunell had a solid year last year throwing for over 3000 yds, 23 tds and 10 pickles, now he'll just give it to portis or moss or lloyd or randel-el or cooley or betts, shoot, even sellers in the redzone. Todd Collins played behind an unbreakable Trent Green so he never got a chance to play but knows Al Saunders system better than anybody on the team. We now have 6 legitimate offensive weapons as opposed to 3 last year, real champions, we'll have to see, still only paper champions, hardly.

what hurt us more than anything last year, particularly to start the year, was turnovers, untimely turnovers, that and not generating any. as we went 5-0 to close the year the biggest and most telling stat was how we protected the ball and generated TOs. that was the only way we beat TB in rnd 1.

Poor Ramsey, he'll probably be the starter by opening day, and with his tendency to hold the ball too long, he'll be a sitting duck on that horrible Jets team. I predict Kellen Clemens starts by Week 5.

RE J Schutheis comments above... Ramsey is no Brad Johnson or Trent Green, never was or will be, he can just throw long and hard. And I don't buy that he's gun shy b/c of hits taken behind a weak O-line, that's part of the NFL. If ifs & buts were candy & nuts, what a great Christmas we'd have... Patrick's probably a nice guy, but he's out of the league in a year.

And about those knocks above on our O-line... Were you asleep during last season? Most top sports writers considered it one of the best in the league last year, and that's with Jansen's broken thumbs... I think they'll be really good this year. And we all know what Joe Gibbs does with even mediocre QB's and strong lines.

As Dexter once said: "It's inedible, Grease(man), we're going to the Superbowl!"

Quoting Dexter Manley & Nino "vamos muchachos...venga conmigo" Greasemanelli...........priceless.

GO SKINS!!!!!

Patrick is a good QB. For the two years Spurrier was in DC, Ramsey was the toughest guy on the team. He didn't do as well as everyone would have liked, but neither did anyone else on the team. He's still got a cannon for an arm, and he'd be as good as any QB in the league stat-wise playing with all the talent the 'Skins have now.
Gibbs lacked confidence in another young QB and trashed his career too: anyone remember Jay Schroeder? When Doug Williams went down in the Superbowl Jay came in for a series and dumped a pass to Kelvin Bryant over the middle. If Bryant had caught the damn ball he'd still be running, and I doubt Williams would have come back in the game. But Bryant dropped the ball, Williams came in on the next series and 5 possessions later it was 35-10. Schroeder was gone the next year, and never did much with the Raiders. I hope fate has something better in store for Patrick. Of course Gibbs is the Hall of Fame coach and I'm not, but he sure knows how to destroy young QB's.

Jay Schroeder destroyed his own career. He had chances to prove himself after his weak showing with the Redskins. This ain't therapy, this is football. You have to earn your keep in this game.

I'm still holding out for Ramsey though. He's going to break out at some point, I can feel it. I'm sad it won't be with the Skins.
