Rams Bidding for S. Davis

The St. Louis Rams made a contract offer to free agent tailback Stephen Davis when he visited the team Wednesday, an NFL source said. But Davis left town without signing with the club.

The Rams were the second team visited by Davis this week as the former Pro Bowler seeks to continue his career after being released by the Carolina Panthers in March. He visited the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday but didn't sign with them.

Davis is 32 and there are concerns about the soundness of his right knee, on which he underwent microfracture surgery in 2004. But he apparently passed physicals for both the Eagles and Rams.

The Rams, like the Eagles, are looking at Davis as a prospective backup. The Rams have Steven Jackson as their starting tailback, but could use a reliable reserve with Marshall Faulk out for the season and perhaps headed to retirement. Jackson ran for more than 1,000 yards last season as a second-year pro but has been plagued by a sore foot recently.
