Upshaw Praises Owners' Choice

The smooth working relationship between outgoing commissioner Paul Tagliabue and NFL Players Association chief Gene Upshaw contributed heavily to the game's long-standing labor peace. But Tagliabue's retirement doesn't mean that labor strife is on the horizon. Newly elected commissioner Roger Goodell also gets along well with Upshaw, who praised the owners' selection.

"Over the past several years, the Players Association has worked closely with Roger on many issues," Upshaw said in a written statement released by the union today. "He has always entered every discussion with an open mind and is willing to work together to find solutions to any problem. This is great news for the NFL and it couldn't be more well-deserved. We look forward to continuing our relationship and working together in the future."
