League Not Censoring NFL Network, Goodell Says

New commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that he does not see the league as a censor for the television channel that it owns, the NFL Network.

"It's, one, a distribution outlet for the NFL," Goodell said when asked about the role of the league-owned network. "By putting [regular season] games on there this year, it's a good opportunity for us to bring games to more of our fans. Secondly, obviously, there's a marketing tool where we're able to get our fans more access to the NFL. But we do not in any way censor what our talent says, and that is not the role that we play."

Goodell said Wednesday that he'd decided against dismissing Bryant Gumbel from his job as an NFL Network announcer for critical comments that the veteran broadcaster recently made on HBO.
