Owens Reportedly Attempted Suicide
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide Tuesday night, according to a report by a Dallas television station.
WFAA-TV reported that a Dallas police report it had obtained said that Owens was depressed and took prescription pain pills.
Earlier reports by another Dallas TV station and newspapers had said that Owens was treated at Baylor University Medical Center after having an allergic reaction to pain medication Tuesday. According to those earlier reports, he was taken to the hospital's emergency room by a fire rescue squad to have vomiting induced.
The police report said that Owens had a prescription of 40 pills filled on Sept. 18 but had taken only five of those pills before Tuesday, WFAA reported.
When Owens was asked if he had taken the rest of the prescription, he said yes, according to the police report.
When he was asked if he was attempting to harm himself, he said yes, the report said. A female companion reportedly saw him take two pills.
Owens suffered a broken finger during a game against the Washington Redskins 10 days ago. Before Tuesday's developments, the Cowboys had been hopeful that he would practice today and perhaps play in Sunday's game at Tennessee.

your comment is right on... life is really real. he may rich and successful, but money cannot buy you happiness.
t.o. does need a mental health break. and the media need to leave him alone.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone will be leaving him alone. But I do wish him a successful recovery. Depression and addiction can be devastating, and I don't wish their ravages on anyone.

Big Skins fan here, but I feel for anyone who is experiencing the inner turmoil that would lead them to something like this.
If this report is true, I pray that he will experience a full recovery both physically and mentally. Godspeed.

Looking back there sure seems as though there were a lot of signs of him calling out for help, but most everyone (me included) thought he was just being a jerk.
Godspeed T.O.
Take some time, get your mind right and if you play again I wish you the best, if not, enjoy everything life has to offer. There are about 240 million people in the US that don't play professional football and a lot of them have happy, fulfilling lives.

Calling this a suicide attempt is ridiculous - you ALL should know better than to trust what a local (Dallas) TV news program is "reporting" here. Not only is there ZERO evidence that T.O. attempted suicide, but the breach of medical privacy here is borderline criminal. I hope T.O. gets well enough soon to start suing people.

As sad as this situation is and as much help as he will need to overcome his depression, let's hope that this turns out to be the incident that finally gets him off the front pages and into treatment. He has been a troubled young man for a long time. Let us HOPE that this is not some big stunt. His constant need for being the center of attention may have finally gone over the top and gotten him the help he needs.

Sad about TO. But pleasantly surprising reading the sensitive and empathetic comments of previous posters. The more mental illness comes out of the shadows, the better for all of us. And the earlier people like TO reach out for help, the better of course.

Whah? needs to read the article more carefully. The information concerning the number of pills taken and the intent ot injure himself comes from the police report. Not a breach of medical ethics, but standard journalistic procedure.

As a diehard Cowboys fan for over 20 years, of course I am saddened to hear about TO. Even with all of his flamboyance he is still a human being and obviously has some real issues to deal with. This further goes to show that money and fame are irrelevant if you don't have a true inner peace.
I am in prayer with TO and wish him the best. He does indeed need some time to himself and unfortunately the media will be all over this one for some time now.
If I was him I would pull a Ricky Williams(minus the weed of course) and seclude myself on a island to think it over.
Peace...Dallas forever!

The sports "media" needs to be vilified here. They regularly do the bidding of ownership, and they turned a contract dispute into a moral issue, with TO the "evil" party. If most of the country HATED you, you might conclude your life is worthless, too. There are some hateful talk show hosts I wish would commit suicide. Oh, and while you're busy siding with the owners, could someone pointout those lower hockey tickets we were supposed to get after the owners broke the union?

I wouldn't call a police report zero evidence, if that report does indeed exist. There are conflicting stories about whether he really tried to commit suicide at this point, however. I hope the media aren't being too hasty in reporting this incident, though. They get burned when they really on second- and third-hand sources and don't fully investigate a story.

I have to say that I'm truly impressed by the classy and supportive statements made on this board. What a pleasant surprise to see the mature and kind reactions of the 'Skins fans.
It's hardly surprising to me to see that TO is depressed and hurting, I hope that he gets the help he needs.

I wouldn't blame the media for TO's problems. Sure, the coverage was way overblown, but his contract situation and his deactivation and his constant deriding of Donovon McNabb was newsworthy. He brought a lot of that coverage on himself. He likes being the center of attention at times, it seems.
Still, I hope, if the report is true, TO realizes his problem and works quickly toward resolving it and straightening out his life.

Is this another Dennis Rodman incident? Is this T.O. out in public with the alter ego and Terrell in private at home? Let me know your comments on this.

One thing I hate about the media and many sports fans is their need to react to everything right away. At this point, no one knows for sure whether T.O. attempted suicide except T.O. and whoever else he confided in. The media has a tendency to run with a story even without hearing all sides. The other thing I would like to add is that though it's true about the stigma regarding mental illness, I'm not ready to play the nightingale for T.O. just yet. We all have ups and downs in our lives and have been depressed at some point, but T.O. has a history of playing the media and grabbing attention. This could very well be another stunt. Maybe a part of him was down, but maybe another part of him figured out a way to get people to stop castigating him without doing any actual harm to himself, and just in time for a "brave" return for Sunday's game. I'm just saying no one knows everything at this point and the former is as possible as anything. I'm willing to sympathize with T.O., just not as readily as everyone else. Mental illness is very serious and I know people who have truly been through it. But given T.O.'s history, I'm not ready to say that's what's going on here. I'll wait till I know more.........

I agree the media needs to leave T.O alone. I beleive that he had an allergic reaction to the medication, and the Dallas News is turning it into something that it is not! I am a true Cowboy fan, and I wish T.O. a speedy recovery so that he will be at the game in November when we beat the Redskins AGAIN!!
Blessings, Dana

You know what's really sad? My first reaction to the report - and I'll bet others had the same reaction - was that this is yet another T.O. publicity stunt. You kind of hate to say, "I hope this is true" given the gravity of the situation... but you never know with this guy.
Mercurial talent - yes. Guts - yes. And I really don't even take issue with his self-promotion - he is his own brand. However, his harmful behavior which, until now has been directed only at his coaches and teammates, overshadows these positive attributes.
Whether the report is true or false, I hope T.O. gets his life - and act - together. The sports society is a forgiving one. Unless you're Barry Bonds... (and we'll probably find room in our hearts to forgive him too)

IF THIS REALLY WAS A SUICIDE ATTEMPT T.O. WAS PROBABLY IN FEAR OF SOMEONE OUTING HIM ON A ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE, HE IS PROBABLY HOMOSEXUAL IN THE N.F.L.

smokinggun has the police report online. It explicitly says it was a suicide attempt. Anyone who would expect the media to not report it is delusional.

Checked out the smoking gun post by 20003 and the police report is there.
While I agree that T.O. has been getting much-too-much press, I need to point out he brought it on himself.
He wanted out of San Fran, used the press to blast his QB in San Fran, and it worked. He got his wish and was traded to Philly (kinda via Baltimore ... sorta).
Since it worked so well once, he used the press to blast another QB in Philly. And once again he got his wish, although I don't think he expected the way Philly handled it - they must have a better legal dept. than San Fran.
He has been living and getting his way by manipulating the press so he can't complain when they write about him.
Not a big T.O. fan, but I truly do pray he gets well soon and gets his head screwed on straight. He has a long life to look forward to after football (Yes, T.O. - there is a life after football).

Just like I said before! The media made such a big deal out of this just because it was T.O. He didn't try to committ suicide. He accidentally took too much of the pain medication. I'm just so glad that he is O.K. I don't beleive that he did this just to get press coverage. He will be just fine, and the Cowboys will rule the NFC East this Year! Get well soon T.O.

The police report was wrong!!!
Posted by: Dana | September 27, 2006 4:09 PM
To Dana,
Other then your obvious bias as a Cowboy fan(makes me sick writing those words), what do you think a beat cop would have to gain by making this up? So you listen to the T.O. news conference and you believe that he mistakenly took the pain medication and mixed it with supplements and got light headed and wasn't aware of what he was being asked.
Then you believe that he had taken the remainder of the pills he had for pain medication and "put them in a draw". Are you that gullible? Then he quantifies his need to live by saying that he has 25 million reasons to live. The man needs help. Maybe he regrets doing it and wishes he never did, but come on the media didn't make this up and if this was close friend or relative opf yours, I would hope you'd try to help them, because that's what he needs. And yes I am a Dr. of Psychology (actually I stayed at a Holiday Inn express last night).

While I do not care for Terrell Owens, and am a diehard 'Skins fan, I wish him a speedy recovery.
He should probably sit out the rest of the season for a long time rehabilitation at this point, though... Mental Illness is a killer, and he, his agent, his team, and his fans need to realize that Football is a game... life is real.
