49ers Reportedly Tell San Francisco Officials They Now Intend to Build Stadium in Santa Clara

According to reports in the Bay Area, the 49ers informed San Francisco officials on Wednesday that they're ending negotiations for a proposed new stadium in the city.

The 49ers reportedly now intend to build a stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., where the team's practice facility is located.

The 49ers had been planning to build a stadium next to Monster Park, the 46-year-old facility on Candlestick Point that is the NFL's oldest stadium. But talks with the city reportedly stalled over parking proposals and other considerations.

If the plan indeed is abandoned and the 49ers build a stadium in Santa Clara, it could undermine San Francisco's bid to host the 2016 Olympics. A new stadium is a key element to that effort.
