49ers Won't Change Name Even if Stadium is Built in Santa Clara

San Francisco 49ers officials say the team won't change its name even if the club builds a new stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

The team informed San Francisco officials on Wednesday that it was ending negotiations on a proposed stadium at Candlestick Point alongside Monster Park, the NFL's oldest facility.

The 49ers want to open a new stadium in Santa Clara in 2012. The club's training facility already is located there.

There's no good reason to change the name. Lots of teams are not located in the geographic region of their name. Redkins, Giants, Dallas, etc. So long as you are still in the central fan base area within commuting distance, its not a big deal.
