QB Drama in Jacksonville

It seems clear at this point what probably happened with the Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterback situation: Coach Jack Del Rio decided to bench Byron Leftwich and go with David Garrard as the starter but didn't want to say so, but Leftwich didn't play along.

Leftwich told reporters today that his sprained ankle is almost fully healed and he could play if needed. That's a different story than Del Rio offered earlier in the week, when he said that Leftwich's ankle wasn't going to get any healthier this season and he'd rather go with a healthy quarterback who's winning than one who's not healthy.

The Jaguars have won two straight games with Garrard as the starter to improve their record to 5-3. Del Rio, it seems, was offering Leftwich a way to be benched gracefully. But Leftwich was having none of it, and the Jaguars perhaps could have a difficult offseason decision to make about whether to retain Leftwich if Garrard keeps the starting job the rest of the season and continues to thrive.
