Seahawks Have Revolving Door at Left Guard, Among Other Problems

The Seattle Seahawks hope to have Floyd (Pork Chop) Womack back this week as their starting left guard.

The identity of the starting left guard usually isn't big news to an NFL team, but it's different for the Seahawks because they've been unable to suitably replace departed Pro Bowler Steve Hutchinson after their front office botched Hutchinson's foray into free agency last offseason and lost him to the Minnesota Vikings.

Womack was to be the successor but he's missed the last five games because of a sprained knee. Chris Spencer, a former first-round draft pick as a center, got the job next but struggled and split playing time last weekend with rookie Rob Sims. Now the Seahawks are hopeful that Womack will demonstrate on the practice field this week that he's ready to play and stabilize the position.

The defending NFC champions are on a two-game losing streak and will be without tailback Shaun Alexander and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for Monday night's game against the Oakland Raiders. The Seahawks are 1-3 without Alexander, who remains sidelined because of a cracked bone in his foot. Club officials had expected to have the reigning league most valuable player back this week, but tests Monday showed that Alexander's foot had not healed fully.

Hasselbeck is on the shelf because of a sprained knee ligament. The curse of the Super Bowl loser perhaps is alive and well. The previous five teams to lose the Super Bowl followed up by having a losing record and missing the playoffs the next season.
