Coughlin's Job Looks to be in Serious Jeopardy Now
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.--It once seemed almost unthinkable that the New York Giants would fire Coach Tom Coughlin after this season.
He won the NFC East title last season. He kept the team from unraveling after a 1-2 start this season, as the Giants ran off five straight victories after an early bye week for a 6-2 record at the midway point.
But Coughlin being dismissed is a very real possibility now. The Giants' record fell to 7-8 with Sunday's 30-7 defeat to the New Orleans Saints at Giants Stadium. They've lost six of seven games, and quarterback Eli Manning isn't progressing as rapidly as the Giants expected when they traded for him on draft day 2004.
Coughlin's contract runs through next season. The Giants, like many other teams, generally don't force their coach to work in the final season of a contract, so they likely will either fire him or extend his contract after this season. It seemed that the only thing that could get Coughlin fired was a total collapse by the Giants. Unfortunately for them and for him, this appears to qualify.
They're still in the thick of the NFC wild card scramble. But if they lose to the Washington Redskins on Saturday night at FedEx Field and don't reach the playoffs, it now seems more likely than not that Coughlin will be out.
The Giants already have begun conducting interviews to find a successor to retiring general manager Ernie Accorsi. They have interviewed four internal candidates but also are considering people from outside the organization, and if they do bring in an outsider it would seem to indicate that they're ready to change the direction of the organization and a coaching change also would be in order.

When he took the job he criticized injured players and preached discipline and return of Giants pride. Yet they commit 1 dumb penalty after another. Can't defend the middle of the field. Time for a new def coordinator and maybe a new head coach.
Deadskins will win on Saturday.

Frie Coughlin and then put Eli on an all protien diet and get him to look, and throw like a man.
Sorely disappointing season, even if they get to the playoffs.

Surprised and disappointed when Whitfield committed two personal fouls and when he came off field to sidelines no coach said anything to him. Amazed at lack of discipline and lack of coaching.
