Goodell Says He's Hopeful Agreement Will Be Completed Soon to Bolster Steroid Program

FRISCO, Tex.--NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said today he's hopeful of completing an agreement with Players Association chief Gene Upshaw soon to strengthen the league's steroid-testing program.

Goodell said there's no agreement yet but he hopes one can be completed "in the near future."

Goodell and Upshaw have discussed the possibility of increasing the number of random tests for players and making more extensive use of the sophisticated and costly carbon isotope ratio test to determine whether testosterone in a sample is synthetic.

"We've had a lot of discussions," Goodell said after the owners' meeting at a resort in this Dallas suburb. "We have discussed with our advisers--our medical advisers--changes in technology, changes in science, how we can continue to stay ahead of that issue. We will continue those discussions."
