Strahan's Football Future Unclear
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.--There's room to wonder whether defensive end Michael Strahan has played his last game for the New York Giants.
Strahan was placed on the injured reserve list Tuesday and likely will have to undergo surgery for the foot injury that will end up keeping him out of seven of the Giants' final eight games of the regular season. He returned from a six-game absence to play in Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints but aggravated the injury.
Strahan is 35 and would be facing six to eight months of rehabilitation after surgery. Giants tailback Tiki Barber, who already has decided to retire after the season, said on his satellite radio show this week that he thinks Strahan probably retire if he had to undergo surgery on his foot. But other Giants players, including middle linebacker Antonio Pierce and rookie defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka, said Wednesday they think Strahan will return to play.
Strahan's contract has two seasons left on it paying him $4 million a year.
The Giants already got a possible replacement for Strahan in the fold by using their first-round draft pick last spring on Kiwanuka, who has made some glaring mistakes during his rookie season but has demonstrated that he's capable of being a big-time pass rusher and a playmaker all over the field.
