S. Payton Named Coach of Year by AP
New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton was named the NFL's coach of the year today by the Associated Press.
Payton, as a rookie head coach, inherited a Saints team that went 3-13 under predecessor Jim Haslett last season after being displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, and went 10-6 to earn the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs.
"I think that we're in a sport that is probably, in my opinion, the most difficult sport to give out an individual award," Payton said at a news conference at the Saints' training facility in Metairie, La. "I feel that if you research the prior winners, they all had three things in common: They had a great group of assistant coaches on their staff, which I feel that I do. They probably all had a great team in the locker room with players that put the team first, which in my case I do. Finally, they have all probably had great support from the front office and ownership. I feel that as well. I think this is something that is a reflection on many people and not just one person. I'm fortunate enough to be surrounded by a lot of good people in those areas."
The New York Jets' Eric Mangini, another rookie head coach, finished a distant second in the voting, getting three votes--to 44 for Payton--in balloting by 50 media members. San Diego's Marty Schottenheimer got two votes and Tennessee's Jeff Fisher got one.
