Chargers' Coaching Choice Near?
New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs interviewed Sunday for the San Diego Chargers' head coaching job. Gibbs was the sixth candidate to interview for the job in a five-day span beginning Wednesday.
The Chargers also interviewed San Francisco 49ers linebackers coach Mike Singletary, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner, Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera and Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
It's possible the Chargers will make their choice now or they still might interview Seattle Seahawks defensive backs coach Jim Mora. USC Coach Pete Carroll has told associates he's not leaving the school for the Chargers' job. One problem was that Carroll would want final say over player-related decisions if he returns to the NFL and the Chargers have a general manager, A.J. Smith, with that control.
There were rumblings around the league late Sunday night and early today that the Chargers either would hire Ryan as their coach or hire Turner as their coach and veteran NFL defensive coach Ted Cottrell as their defensive coordinator. Turner is the former head coach of the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders and nearly was hired as the Dallas Cowboys' head coach last week before being passed 12 days ago in favor of Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Turner also is a former Chargers' offensive coordinator.
