Chargers Said to be Focusing on Turner

The San Diego Chargers seem to be focusing on San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner as their next head coach, an NFL source said.

Turner has had failed head coaching stints with the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders. But he nearly got the Dallas Cowboys' job before being passed over in favor of Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips 12 days ago and he would inherit a San Diego team that went 14-2 this past season before losing to the New England Patriots in the second round of the AFC playoffs.

Turner would succeed Marty Schottenheimer, who was fired last week when club president Dean Spanos tired of the friction between his coach and his general manager, A.J. Smith.

The Chargers interviewed six candidates in a five-day span ending Sunday.

Norv would appeal to a control freak like A.J. Smith because he's weak and submissive. I wonder, though, if A.J. recalls the mess between Turner and Charley Casserly here in DC that ended with Casserly losing his job. Actually Mark, you'd know best about that. Were Turner and Casserly feuding or did Snyder just want to pick one of them to be his fall guy back when he was in full-on Napoleon mode?

Conversation with Maske
Me: Since he keeps getting jobs, Norv evidently has pictures of somebody.
Maske: Evidently, he has pictures of everybody.

turner was upset at casserly for not getting his first round picks or free agents intro training camp on time. heath shuler bombed cuz he had two weeks before the regular season stareted to learn an offensive system that took troy aikman nearly two years to master. casserly was a horrible GM but snyder was just as bad a GM as well.
