L. Smith Says He Expects to Complete Extension with Bears
Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith told reporters today in Indianapolis he expects to complete a contract extension with the team before his current deal expires after next season.
Smith just led the Bears to the Super Bowl in a season in which he was the lowest-paid head coach in the league with a salary of $1.35 million. His contract runs through next season, when he'll have a $1.45 million salary. Talks on an extension haven't yielded any breakthroughs and it's possible he'll be a coaching free agent after next season.
But he said today at the NFL scouting combine, according to the Associated Press: "Of course I don't like being the lowest-paid coach in the league. I'd like to be in a different position. I look at it like I won't be in that position long."

Lovie is lucky to have a job. Hed had a weakness at the quarterback position and did nothing to improve the position. He had an experienced quarterback on the bench and never used him. It was the quality of platers that led Lovie to the Super Bowl. The opinion in Vegas is that Lovie blew it.

The NFL's diversity policy has made great strides and it was fantastic to see Lovie and Tony on the sidelines of the Super Bowl - but what message does it send when a Division winning, black coach remains the lowest paid in the NFL while other white coaches with losing records (or no head coach NFL experience) are paid far more. Lovie's bottom-dwelling status in pay is a slap in the face to the strides the NFL has made in diversity. Winning should be rewarded - plain and simple.

So "pasifikawv", you think Marty was rewarded properly for having the best record in the NFL?

Marty got screwed. Getting canned after a 14-2 season is unreal. Winning should be rewarded. I don't know what mgmt in SD was thinking. And the excuse that he hasn't been able to win the "big game" is lame. It's not about the games he didn't win in the past with other teams- it's about the games he could have won in SD. I'll never understand that one.
