Schottenheimer Says He Respects Spanos's Decision

Marty Schottenheimer told the San Diego Union-Tribune he was "doing fine" after being fired Monday night by Chargers President Dean Spanos.

Spanos cited the "dysfunctional situation" created by a rift between Schottenheimer and the team's general manager, A.J. Smith.

"I think it's hard enough in our business when everybody is on the same page, let alone when you have a breach," Schottenheimer told the Union-Tribune. "Dean made a decision and I respect his decision. This is not a birthright, but clearly in my opinion it was a very, very difficult circumstance to be in.

"Clearly the situation--and I've talked about it on any number of occasions--is not an environment where you can consistently be successful."

How do you go from 14-2 and the best record in the AFC to unemployed? Unbelievable.

Bring him back to DC!

For my own selfish reasons, I'm not sad to see him go. However from a business standpoint, I don't care if I can't stand you personally, if you can deliver on the field I'm keeping you around. Seems like Schott delivered to me...but then again, I'm a Raiders fan, so I guess its all relative.

Don't agree with the decision by Spanos, expecially now that he let both of his coordinators go to other teams as head coaches. He should have made this decision on Jan 15th and promoted either Cameron or Phillips to head coach. Now the team is screwed from a management standpoint.

This isn't the first time Spanos has pulled this. He backed his GM (Bobby Bethard) and fired the head coach (Bobby Ross) after Ross took the team to the Super Bowl.

If only Mr. Butler had lived - he had a great relationship with Marty and built most of the team that exists today. I know AJ SMith has handled the last two drafts, but he was following the roadmap Butler designed, including the college scouting system and data. In another two years that scouting system will be 100% Smith - then we will see how he really does.

Marty chokes more than Albert Desalvo or Mamma Cass. Look at that playoff record, 5 wins and 13 losses!

Even with a 14-2 team with home field advantage he can't win a big game to save his life.

Good riddance. Hire Barry Switzer and the Bolts are in the Super Bowl next season.

Yeah, Marty might choke in the playoffs, but who else is out there who can take the Chargers to the promised land? Norv? HA!

How about Bobby Ross who is looking for a job again?
