Patriots Keep Sauerbrun By Matching Broncos' Offer

The New England Patriots retained former Pro Bowl punter Todd Sauerbrun by matching the Denver Broncos' contract offer to him.

Sauerbrun signed a one-year deal worth as much as $1.4 million with the Broncos last week. But when he signed with the Patriots last season, his contract gave them the right to retain him by matching any offer he might receive from another club this offseason. The Patriots exercised that right.

Sauerbrun wanted to return to the Broncos, the team that released him last season after he served a four-game suspension by the league for testing positive for ephedra. Even so, he remained fond of the city and the organization and wanted to return to finish his career there.
