T. Johnson Set For Hearing Before Commissioner

Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson, facing a possible suspension for violating the league's conduct policy, is scheduled to have a hearing before NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday in New York.

Johnson just finished serving 60 days of a 120-day jail sentence for violating his probation in a gun case. The owners of several NFL teams and executives within the league familiar with the case have said in recent weeks that they expect Goodell to suspend Johnson for much or perhaps even all of next season.

Last month, Goodell suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam (Pacman) Jones for all of the 2007 season and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry for the first half of it for violating the conduct policy. Goodell made Jones's suspension reviewable after 10 games. Jones appealed his suspension and had another hearing before Goodell last week. Goodell's decision on the appeal is pending, and Jones's attorneys have left open the possibility of filing a lawsuit.

Tank will be evaluated based upon the old league conduct policy because the offenses occurred prior to the new conduct policy.

Even so, the league can (and probably will) suspend Tank under that policy, just like Gameguy Jones and Chris Henry. And Tank actually has more convictions that Gameguy.

The only question now is, How long?
