Chiefs, At Last, Agree to Trade T. Green to Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins finally completed a long-awaited trade to obtain veteran quarterback Trent Green from the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to a source familiar with the deliberations, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced, the Dolphins agreed today to send a fifth-round draft pick to the Chiefs for Green. The pick can become a fourth-rounder if Green reaches certain statistical benchmarks, the source said.

The two teams had been haggling for much of the offseason over the proposed trade, unable to agree to the draft-choice compensation that the Dolphins would send to the Chiefs. Green long ago agreed to rework his contract, which was to pay him a salary of $7.2 million next season, to accommodate a trade to Miami.

Green, 36, likely will be the Dolphins' starter next season. The trade reunites him with new Dolphins coach Cam Cameron, who was the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Redskins when Green played for the team.

When the two clubs were discussing the trade, there were reports that the Dolphins probably would release quarterback Daunte Culpepper if they were able to acquire Green.

The Chiefs played well last season while backup quarterback Damon Huard filled in for Green when Green was sidelined by a concussion. The Chiefs re-signed Huard earlier this offseason and plan to have him compete with youngster Brodie Croyle for the starting job.
