Strahan Holding Out, Said to be Pondering Retirement

Defensive end Michael Strahan is holding out from the New York Giants' training camp and has informed the team through his agent that he's considering retirement.

Agent Tony Agnone told Giants General Manager Jerry Reese in a telephone conversation Thursday evening about Strahan's decision not to report to training camp, at least for now. Reese told reporters today about his conversation with Agnone, and the Giants placed Strahan on their reserve-did not report list.

Strahan reportedly asked the club in recent months to upgrade a contract that is to pay Strahan, 35, a salary of $4 million in each of the next two seasons. Strahan had only three sacks in an injury-plagued 2006 season. He has 132-1/2 sacks in 14 seasons with the Giants.

He would be the second prominent player to retire from the Giants since last season ended. Tailback Tiki Barber retired after last season. Barber said in the late stages of last season that it wouldn't surprise him if Strahan contemplated retirement as well.
