B. Quinn, Browns Agree to Deal
Rookie quarterback Brady Quinn agreed to a five-year contract with the Cleveland Browns today, ending his absence from training camp.
The deal is worth just more than $20 million and could pay Quinn, the second of the Browns' two selections in the first round of the NFL draft in April, close to $10 million in additional incentives and escalators, a source said. Quinn receives $7.75 million in guaranteed bonuses.
Quinn is to compete with Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson for the Browns' starting job, although it's unclear how far he's been set back by his late arrival to training camp. The Browns, after getting Wisconsin left tackle Joe Thomas with the third overall choice in the draft, traded back up into the first round to get Quinn after the Notre Dame product, once regarded as a candidate for the top overall pick, slipped through the first-round order.
The deal leaves only two first-round picks league-wide still unsigned: quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the top overall choice by the Oakland Raiders, and cornerback Darrelle Revis, the 14th pick by the New York Jets. The Quinn negotiations were combative because his powerful agent, Tom Condon, sought more guaranteed money than Quinn's draft slot dictated and wanted a lucrative package of incentives and escalators to enrich the deal if he became the club's starting quarterback.
