Colts Show They're Still Formidable

INDIANAPOLIS--The Indianapolis Colts sent an early message to the rest of the NFL tonight:

Watch out.

For the Colts, the offseason was about losing players, especially on defense, on the heels of their Super Bowl triumph. But they opened the new season with a gem of an all-around performance, scoring 34 straight points to beat the New Orleans Saints, 41-10.

The Saints managed only a field goal on offense, with their lone touchdown coming courtesy of their defense.

"Our defense," Colts Coach Tony Dungy said, "it's kind of exciting to watch.... I didn't envision holding them to three points, no."

Said Colts quarterback Peyton Manning: "If our defense can do that all year, it sure will help our offense. I think our defense felt challenged. That's all we heard about all offseason. It sure was a good start. [But] that's all it is, is a start."

Manning and wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne were terrific, as always. Second-year tailback Joseph Addai showed he's capable of taking care of the running game himself, minus departed complementary runner Dominic Rhodes, by rushing for 118 yards and a touchdown.

Manning wasn't sacked, with rookie Tony Ugoh taking over seamlessly for retired left tackle Tarik Glenn. Saints defensive end Will Smith disrupted one Manning throw in the first half in which rookie wideout Anthony Gonzalez was open and Manning missed him. But that was it.

"He has a real calm look in the huddle," Manning said. "He doesn't look like a rookie. It's just one game, and there are going to be times he looks like a rookie. But you sure do like his demeanor."

Said Dungy: "We ran our offense today, and Tony held up real well against a good player."

The only real glitch was Wayne's first-half fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Saints cornerback Jason David.

"Reggie had three touchdowns," Manning deadpanned. "He caught two and gave them one."

Is it me or is Reggie Bush the most overrated NFL player today?

Maybe. But it will take a lot more games to know for sure.
