Police Spoke to Jaguars Rookie Safety About Weekend Shooting

Police in Gainesville, Fla., spoke to Jacksonville Jaguars rookie safety Reggie Nelson on Sunday morning, about 7-1/2 hours after a shooting near a nightclub, according to broadcast and print reports.

Nelson reportedly gave the police a statement but is not a suspect in the incident, in which two men were shot around 2:30 a.m. as they sat in a parked car outside the nightclub and then drove themselves to a hospital. One man reportedly was in serious condition with a head injury, and the other was shot in the arm.

A television report in Gainesville identified Nelson, who played for the University of Florida before being selected by the Jaguars in the first round of last spring's NFL draft, as a potential witness. Nelson's agent, Hadley Engelhard, told the Florida Times-Union that Nelson was at the nightclub earlier in the night but did not witness the shooting.

The Jaguars had a bye this past weekend.
