Niners Add Weinke

The San Francisco 49ers signed former Carolina Panthers starter Chris Weinke today for depth at quarterback.

The 49ers placed Alex Smith on the injured reserve list. He's scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery Thursday. Trent Dilfer is sidelined by a concussion and third-stringer Shaun Hill, formerly of the University of Maryland, is to take over as the starter this week.
