Parcells Fires Mueller as Dolphins' GM

The expected housecleaning has begun in Miami.

Bill Parcells, the team's newly hired executive vice president of football operations, fired Randy Mueller today as the club's general manager.

Mueller had been hired to work with the team's previous coach, Nick Saban, and helped to assemble the roster that produced this season's 1-15 record.

It had been expected when Parcells accepted an offer last week from Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga to oversee the franchise's football operations that he would hire a new general manager and probably a new coach. The leading candidate to succeed Mueller could be Dallas Cowboys scouting executive Jeff Ireland. He worked closely with Parcells when Parcells was the Cowboys' coach.

Parcells also is close to New England Patriots front office chief Scott Pioli and New York Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum. Pioli, in fact, is Parcells's son-in-law. But either one could have trouble getting out of his current contract to take a job in Miami in which he wouldn't have final say over player-related decisions.

Parcells is scheduled to meet Tuesday with Dolphins Coach Cam Cameron. The Dolphins hired Cameron after Saban departed following last season. Cameron managed only one win in his rookie season as an NFL head coach, and Parcells might want to hire a coach with whom he has worked closely in the past. Parcells associates have pointed to Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley, formerly an assistant to Parcells in Dallas, and Cowboys offensive line coach Tony Sparano as possibilities.
