Alstott Expected to Announce Retirement Today

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have scheduled a news conference for today at which fullback Mike Alstott is expected to announce his retirement.

The six-time Pro Bowler did not play this season because of a neck injury, which he said was unrelated to a previous neck injury in 2003.

Alstott, 34, has played 12 NFL seasons, all with the Buccaneers. He has been one of the most popular players in franchise history and is the team's career leader with 71 touchdowns.

The league is losing a great player.

Watching Mike plow through the middle of a defensive line was awesome - everybody on the planet knew he was getting the ball and where he was going to run but he was practically unstoppable. That kind of determination and guts is very rare today, and not just in football.

Thanks for the memories Mike.

Happy trails.
