Wilfork Fined $15,000

The NFL fined New England Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork $15,000 for poking his finger through the facemask of New York Giants tailback Brandon Jacobs during the regular season finale last Saturday night at Giants Stadium.

Officials did not see the incident and Wilfork was not penalized during the game, but the confrontation after a second-quarter play was shown on the NFL Network broadcast of the game also carried by NBC and CBS.

Wilfork's finger appeared to go near Jacobs's eye but did not appear to make contact with Jacobs, who was not injured. The league fined Wilfork for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Wilfork has denied that he was trying to poke Jacobs in the eye, saying he was merely pointing at Jacobs as part of the trash-talking that was taking place during an emotional game.

The Patriots overcame a 12-point deficit to win the game, 38-35, and complete the first 16-0 regular season in NFL history.

I saw this on the replay the other night. I'm glad he was fined. It was flagrant. Jacobs was the bigger man for not retaliating.

A fine is grossly lenient. For intent to injure and a condescending explanation of what he did he should be suspended at least a game.

If the ref caught it, he could've been ejected. That's the only fitting punishment here, a one game suspension.

He should've been ejected. He's lucky it's only a fine.

Now we see why LT and others wear a shield over their eyes. To prevent these type of attacks.
